picked up Danganronpa 2 in the sale, and i know people have been talking about DR3 and the series in general in other threads...figured I'd put a thread up. I liked the first one quite a bit as a fun detective game but just first 2 hours or so of 2 seems like theyre gonna go big on the conceptual structure. wasnt sure how they would make a sequel but Im fully on board for whats happening so far. I just reached (midway Ch. 1) byakuya's death, which i figured would be the first one to go since he's clearly still the same dude from 1 and probably still has his memories. at least that was my guess. somebody wanted him smoked before he spilled the beans about the previous game, also, he was probably gonna die of heart failure soon anyway.

Please be judicious with spoilers!!! and feel free to talk about Phoenix Wright, 999 series, whatever trash you just bought on steam that has really sugoi (japanese for cool) porn art in it...go hjog wild.

I'm still at the beginning of DR2 as well but I clicked the spoiler and it's exactly what I expected. There's gonna be more twists and turns later I'm sure.

Only other VN in my steam library is this one

https://store.steampowered.com/app/347620/GaokaoLove100Days/

Where you have to decide between having a girlfriend and passing the college placement exams.

I got it to practice my Mandarin listening skills since clicking "repeat line" and having an anime (technically manhua I guess) girlfriend is easier than futzing with audio CDs or youtube or whatever.

The Steam reviews are full of Chinese guys saying "this is exactly what high school was like for me, except I never asked that girl out, I am filled with sadness and regret."

I picked up DR1 for vita a few months back and was looking to play it soon. now is as good a time as any with the thread here

I haven’t really enjoyed the VNs I’ve played before, but I’m hoping this one hooks me. In the past I found I get tired of all the reading and bad writing so I start skipping the dialogue to get to the game parts, P4 Dancing All Night especially. Phoenix Wright I only enjoyed the courtroom scenes and almost none of the other crap

Hopefully DR has a better mix of gameplay to reading

It's like 95% reading, and a lot of the early chapters in DR1 have that plodding VN tone of repeating info 3 - 5 times to make sure you REALLY get what they're going for. But it's also pretty funny, especially the side char stories

P4DAN's story was completely insufferable. DR is much much better in that sense

quote:

"if brought back to the past, which way would you choose?"
I was ever a senior high school student in China ,same as the characters in this game, 1 year ago.
i cried when i finished the game and got the end 10,the warmth of Xiaohan.
Do you know? There was ever a girl in my life,a little similar to Xiaohan. Oh,but she was not my neighbor.
She appeared in front of me,like a godness,
She made me know, what is the feeling when you fall in love with a girl.
She made me know, if you love a girl, how happy will you feel when you see her smile.
But,she also made me know, what is "pain"and what is "regret".
I lost her .
Both of us were under the control of our parents, teachers and the Chinese education systerm. And i feared being refused by her, even i knew, she wouldn't.
I am a coward.I hate myself forever.
Xiaohan is her,it is my first idea when i saw the Xiaohan in screen, then I made the decisions opposed to the reality.
But Xiaohan isn't her.I have lost forever.
Every day without she is like a book without pages.
I don't know how she is now.
I lost in touch with her.But I always recall her at night.
I always worry if there is a boy who will dash away her tears when she cry.
I always worry if there is a boy who wil make her laugh when she is bored.
I always worry if there is a boy who will remind her of dressing more when the winter comes.
I really hope there is a boy besides her,who can look after her and give her happiness instead of me,though he is not me.
To be honest,my English is not good. But I insist on setting down it by English, because I want you to know something.
I don't know where you come from.Maybe US,UK or Australia.
Millions of Chinese boys envy the freedom you have.
So ,don't waste the freedom. When you see the girl sent to you by god.
Put her hand in your hand, and say"I love you".
Don't be a coward like me.

The sequel is unmemorable and not particularly interesting in any way. They phoned it in. It's not BAD but it's not good

the first case in DR2 is pretty overwhelming, feels longer than most of the cases from 1 already and the new mechanics they added are sweet. i love the super theatrical presentation of these cases, with the constantly swirling camera and rapid fire cutaways etc. Shame they couldn't do it in one take so it would be art.

I mean there is a social link system ripped straight from Persona with the Free Time thing but it's pretty simplified and mostly just for you to get fun dialogue with the characters you like the most

Just finished V3 and it was without a doubt the best one in the series. The naming is confusing but the anime "Danganronpa 3" is a totally different story than the game "Danganronpa V3"

Oh drat I was just thinking v3, Nagito is awesome too. Vague spoilers both characters kind of fill similar roles though, with Kokichi as , like, a subversion of Nagito. I haven't thought about it too much but I feel like all the other V3 characters have similar reverse analogues

Also , I think this qualifies for the purpose of this thread, how did y'all like Pyre? I only just finished the second liberation rite so no big spoilers please but I'm really enjoying it so far, just worried the structure might get repetitive. I'm impressed at how much dialogue seems to have been written into the game though -- feels like they accounted for a LOT of different permutations of choices and I also can't think of the last time I played an ensemble-based game like this where I was actually legitimately interested in each of the party members. Maybe the original KOTOR? I've seen hints that something similar to the Bastion modifiers (runes or idols or whatever they were called) that give you increased difficulty for increased reward exist and I'm hoping I unlock those soon -- the structure of the rites is really cool but the AI can't really seem to put up a fight so far.

there’s a lot of really interesting game structure/party mechanics stuff that Pyre does but kind of a spoiler to talk about. You have to deal with fairly easy AI for a while but I do promise they step up their game

E: oh wait you’ve already seen the liberation rites. Then yeah the way the game structures the ‘seasons’ is really interesting, and making you pick which of your best heroes to free is a really hard choice. It makes you spend more time with characters you might not normally use, which makes then sending them away an even tougher decision!

Cool yeah even tho the rites have been a little underwhelming so far the setting and the characters are so good that I'm having no trouble powering through. I really like the idea that the nicest thing you can do for a character you like is free them and lose them from your party forever ..... I freed the Imp first, it seemed like he had been waiting the longest :) miss him tho

edit: also I don't trust the minstrel and i don't trust sandalwood 😒😒 but we shall see...... gonna go play some more right now
