This is kind of a disappointing sentiment because that poo poo ain't gonna fly. Give us a wage hike. Give us universal healthcare. Give us a stimulus check (something that people specifically called out as why they liked Duterte when he got 91% in approval polls earlier this year!). GIVE US SOMETHING.

quote:

A police officer shot dead two unarmed victims at point-blank range on Sunday afternoon in Paniqui, Tarlac.

The suspect was identified as PSMS Jonel Nuezca, 46, and an active member of the Philippine National Police assigned in Parañaque City Crime laboratory, according to the police report.

Killed were Sonya Gregorio, 52, and Frank Anthony Gregorio, 25, both residents of Brgy. Cabayaoasan, Paniqui, Tarlac.

The shooting incident happened around 5:10 p.m. and was captured on video showing Nuezca, also a resident of the said barangay, engaged in a heated confrontation with the victims before drawing his handgun and shooting the two.

Nuezca surrendered at Rosales police station in Pangasinan about an hour after the incident. Rosales police then informed Paniqui MPS, Tarlac PTOC and Paniqui MPS of Nuezca’s surrender.

Elements of Paniqui police picked up the suspect and was transferred to their station for proper disposition and further investigation.

NSFW/NMS video of the incident

it's significant specifically because the whole thing was caught on tape, so now I'm thinking whether that's going to move the needle appreciably

It's insane.

1. Duterte is currently shooting avowed communists. That makes him a reactionary. He's not a communist!

2. 'Duterte should get to do his plan of instituting Federalism so that "Imperial Manila" stops sucking up all of the national budget' - is a line straight from Duterte's own PR and campaign talking points. It's not true (Manila sends out more funding to the rest of the provinces than it takes for itself), but also Federalism isn't necessary to change that. You can just... reconfigure the national budget as is! And if Duterte really is the kind of guy who represents Visayans and Mindanaoans, why isn't he ALREADY doing that? And that's to say nothing of how Federalism would cause a regression within provincial funding because if you make provinces sink-or-swim on their own internal budgets, the underdeveloped regions are going to sink.

3. There is no such thing as "Tagalog supremacy" - that is, again, a talking point invented by Duterte to create a new branch of identity politics, where you're supposed to support Duterte just because he's "Visayan" and the other candidate isn't (which still isn't true because Mar Roxas hails from Capiz???)

4. Jose Maria Sison is in exile in the Netherlands because he's going to be arrested/shot as soon as he tries to go back to the Philippines. He's not "living it up" abroad, and to agree with this is to agree with the Philippine government's anti-communist propaganda. That line about "while children die for him in the Philippines?" also the same kind of accusation that the AFP levels against the CPP-NPA.

5. Duterte is not an "anti-imperialist" - he hasn't materially altered the relationship between the Philippines and the US by one whit. We're still playing our trade by the WTO's rules (and to the devastation of our local rice and pork production), we're still allowing US troops to base themselves in the Philippines, we're still a provider of cheap labor for Western firms, and we're still a market/outlet for Western goods. If you think Duterte is opposed to the US just because he said some mean things about Obama one time or pointed out that MacArthur blew up large parts of Manila in 1945, you're a rube and a mark.

gently caress this guy, now I'm mad.

So uh, not to take away from being angry about this hellcountry and our warlord king, but is anyone on PLDT having trouble accessing the forums? I haven't been able to all day; all other sites I go to work fine, DNS works, and tracert dies in the middle of PLDT's network, which makes me wonder if they're blocking it.

I ditched PLDT a month ago because they still don't have fiber where I am and DSL just wasn't cutting it with two people doing WFH at the same time and our only other option was Sky Cable's fiber offerings

I expect that switching to Sky Cable is going to bite me in the rear end eventually, but for the moment it seems to be working well

So yeah, it looks like PLDT started blocking SA yesterday, along with loving Imgur. Doing some searching, it looks like on the same day, they announced that they partnered with IWF to block sites suspected of hosting CP. Which reminds me of the time last year that they tried doing the same thing and got a lot of people mad after they blocked Pornhub.

whoopee

The only options here in this building are Converge and PLDT, and contrary to the stories I've heard, the former actually seems to have spottier service based on the number of times my mom's called me to complain.

I'm starting to get connectivity issues going to imgur too via Sky Cable. Wonder if it's because the pathing is almost certainly routing through PLDT's lines.

Anyway, it's a good thing I've had a VPN set-up for a while now. Just have to default to always having it turned on.

No issues with Converge here, but as always with internet in the Phillipines, the best provider is the one with less problems in your specific area.

I have a GoMo SIM in a 5G-capable phone as backup since I'm in a high-rise (which makes the Globe and PLDT prepaid internet routers useless) and the non-expiring data is perfect for my purposes.

Wait until the completion of filling of certificates of candidacy first if you're planning to do this. All of this party nomination stuff means nothing until we actually get the CoCs.

I already wrote something for another thread, might as well cross-post:

gradenko_2000 posted:

okay, I may have mentioned this before, but Duterte was threatening (my word) for months and months that he was going to run for Vice President, and then his daughter, Sara Duterte, would run for President, and that would do a full-court press on the Executive branch

Sara has repeatedly claimed that she does NOT want to run for President, and indeed today filed a candidacy for a third term as Mayor of Davao City

also, Bong Go, Duterte's right-hand man, who was also rumored to be running for President (with Rodrigo Duterte as VP, since Sara denied wanting to run for President) did file a candidacy today, for Vice President, but without an identified running mate

so to reiterate, a bunch of poo poo is up in the air:

* Rodrigo Duterte says he's retiring, when people expected him to run for VP
* Sara Duterte has filed a candidacy to run for Mayor of Davao city, when people expected her to run for President
* Bong Go has filed a candidacy to run for Vice President, when people expected him to run for President, but also he doesn't have a running mate, when it would presumably be Sara Duterte

what throws a spanner into all of this is the loophole in our candidacy-filing process: parties can file for a SUBSTITUTION of their candidate up to a month after the official deadline of filing for candidacies

https://www.rappler.com/nation/elections/explainer-rodrigo-duterte-president-substitution

during the 2016 campaign, this is exactly what happened: Martin Diño (a low-level politico) filed as the presidential candidate for the PDP-Laban party (Duterte's party), and Rodrigo Duterte himself filed as a candidate to run for Mayor of Davao City. The official deadline of Oct 16, 2015 came and went... and the Duterte campaign used the intervening month to build hype for Duterte's campaign, with pundits pointing out that the substitution loophole existed, and then wondering if Duterte was going to take it

the substitution deadline was Dec 10, 2015, and on that very day, Duterte rode a private jet from Davao to Manila, and filed to replace Martin Diño as PDP-Laban's candidate, in the final office hours before the government offices closed. It was part of the whole "the people demanded that Duterte be their president" mystique of his early campaign

this is why I wouldn't trust ANYTHING coming out from the official candidacy filings until, like, Christmas 2021. No Duterte for President, no Duterte for VP, Bong Go on his lonesome makes zero sense. I could kind of believe Rodrigo Duterte finally retiring, but only if Sara Duterte were to run for the top spot.

___

by the by, we're also still waiting on whether Bongbong Marcos is going to run for office, and whether Leni Robredo is going to run for office. The official period for filing of candidacies runs until October 8, 2021 (and then the aforementioned substitution loophole carries on for another month after that), so there's still more maneuvering and drama to come.

I might expand on this further once the dust settles

but you're right anakha, there's still another week of this drama left AT LEAST, and possibly an upset in the first week of December

Leila de Lima was PNoy Aquino's Secretary of the Department of Justice during his term. She ran on an anti-crime crusader platform in 2016 and won a Senate seat, and in the course of opening investigations into Duterte's ties into death squads as Davao mayor and extrajudicial killings during his Presidency's "war on drugs", Duterte countered by alleging that she herself had ties to the drug underworld and was a "protector" of certain high-profile drug lords during her time as head of the DOJ.

She's been incarcerated since Feb 24, 2017 and is probably the highest-profile example of a political prisoner in the Philippines. She's running for re-election despite still being behind bars.

this is pretty much where I am as well

she walked back on her promise of abolishing the NTF-ELCAC, is soft on taxation for the rich, isn't even socially progressive as far as being reluctant to come out strongly on abortion and divorce, and they STILL endorsed her, with perhaps the only concession being an inclusion of Nero Colmenares in the Senate slate, three months after it became an issue

I am not loving voting for the liberals. I've already done that twice and I can't do it again - and the fact that it didn't even take 12 hours for so many people I'd consider to be on the left to join ranks behind Robredo just hardens my heart all the further

I hope she wins, but only because I want to be able to say I-told-you-so when this "coalition" turns into ash in so many mouths, as it did with the DSA and the Sunrise Movement
