Last month's thread is here. UFC in June brought us some great fights. The greatest scrap was the throwdown between Jerusalem & former UFC contender Matt “The Law” Lindland which saw Lindland suddenly slip and knock himself out for about 6 hours. We’re still baffled by how that happened but hear Lindland is back to fighting in the Z-Leagues already. June Recap Early in the month, Marlon Moraes took on Jimmie Rivera in a quick bout. Moraes derailed the undefeated Rivera's momentum via a quick KO in the 1st round.  At UFC 225 we saw Robert Whittaker take Yoel Romero the distance for a second time and again earn a decision victory shutting down the Cuban once again. Colby Covington was able to stop Rafael Dos Anjos to become the Interim WW Champion. Curtis Blaydes was able to put away Alistair Overeem on the undercard, making him a possible contender should he get another few wins against talent. https://twitter.com/UFCONFOX/status/1005633254597091328 To add insult to injury, Dana White explicitly stated that Alistair Overeem was on the undercard because of his inability to get fans to tune in compared to CM Punk. Speaking of the Punk, at UFC 225 we were also introduced to the Punkotine, a high level move that took 6 years for CM Punk to develop during his second one-sided loss and subsequent firing by the UFC.  There were a string of retirements announced throughout June as well. We say farewell to former champions Michael Bisping, Rashad Evans, and Johny Hendricks. Vitor Belfort also retired after his KO loss to Machida, and suddenly now that he was off the USADA testing pool he seems to have gone back to beast bod instead of having his dad bod. All of whom have come off fresh loses and father time simply caught up to them. That or they really just love the juice. UFC events in July July brings us five events as well as International Fight Week in Las Vegas. First up on July 6th is the finale to The Ultimate Fighter: Undefeated, a somewhat uneventful season that features future BFFs UFC HW Champion Stipe Miocic and UFC LHW Champion Daniel Cormier flirting with each other for about 6 weeks. The main event features a Middleweight scrap between Brad Tavares and Israel Adesanya in what could be a fun fight. Tavares is coming into the bout with a 4 fight win streak, most recently TKO’ng Kryzstof Jotko. Adesanya is a newcomer to the UFC with a 13-0 record, fitting given the gimmick of this past season of TUF, and most recently got the judges nod over Marven Ventori back in April. The co-main is as normal the TUF tournament finale in which Mike Trizano and Joe Gianetti are facing off in a LW bout. Trizano is repping Team Miocic and Giannetti is repping Team Cormier. In addition there is also the FW tournament finale where Brad “what the hell is his accent?” Katona from Team Cormier is facing the winner of Team Miocic’s Jay Cucciniello and Team Cormier’s Tyler Diamond which at the time of writing hasn’t been concluded. One day after that we have UFC 226. The main event sees the TUF coaches, Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier, face off in a HW title fight that is looking to be even more fun than the last few fights both guys have had. Cormier is undefeated at HW and was pretty impressive given his smaller size, whereas Miocic is undeniably the best UFC HW in history given he has defended his belt more than 3 times. Miocic also put on a clinic against Francis Ngannou in his last bout, while Cormier showed why he was still the UFC LHW champ (sans Jon Jones being eligible to fight) by systematically picking apart Volkan Oezdemir. The co-main on that card sees UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway try to continue to extend his winning ways when he faces against Brian Ortega in a Featherweight title fight. Holloway has looked monstrous since ascending to the top of the division. His two fights against Jose Aldo were fairly one-sided and his attitude of “I’ll fight anyone, even Khabib on less than a week’s notice (only to get hosed by NYSAC idiocy)” is pretty awesome. Ortega has and continues to look impressive, most notably in his last fight earlier in 2018 when he KO’d Frankie Edgar and gave The Answer his first career loss via stoppage. Other fights on the card include a HW bout between Derrick Lewis and Francis Ngannou, where we can see if Da Black Beast will actually capable of getting into the title mix after some great fights recently. In addition is Gokhan “Kicks A Mouthpiece Mid-Air” Saki facing off in a LHW bout against Khalil “Mom, Shut Up” Rountree. One week after UFC 226 sees the third event this month heading over to Boise Idaho for UFC Fight Night: Dos Santos vs. Ivanov. Junior Dos Santos is slated to take on Blagoy Ivanov in the main event, with the latter on a five fight win streak and the former having a “win one, lose one” pattern dating back to 2012. Co-main event will see Dennis Bermudez facing fellow Featherweight Rick Glenn, both fighters are coming in with recent losses so they may go for broke in the hope of keeping their contracts in the UFC. Also on the card is Sage Northcutt taking on Zak Ottow. After that the UFC heads to Germany to present UFC Fight Night: Volkan vs Shogun. A rather muted card, the main event is seeing former UFC LHW champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua taking on former UFC LHW title challenger Volkan Oezdemir. Despite how battered his body seems to be, Rua is coming into the fight on a strong 3 fight win streak while Oezdemir is looking to get back into the win column after a one-sided title fight against Cormier. In addition we have another pair of LHWs in Ilir Latifi taking on Glover Texeira in the co-main event as well as Stefan Struve making an appearance on the card as well. Finally in July we see the UFC return to Canada for UFC on FOX: Alvarez vs Poirier 2. This rematch has long been sought after by Poirier who had a bought against Alvarez turn into a no contest thanks to some knees Alvarez threw to a downed Poirier back at UFC 211. In the co-main event Jose Aldo returns to face off against fellow striker Jeremy Stephens. Aldo has had two significant losses in a row to current champion Max Holloway via TKO both times whereas Stephens comes in on the upswing with a three fight win streak and some impressive KOs & TKOs over the likes of Choi Do Ho and Josh Emmett. Also on the card is Joanna Jędrzejczyk looking to build up enough momentum for another title fight after her two losses to current champion Rose Namajunas. She will take on fellow Strawweight contender Tecia Torres who most recently lost to Jessica Andrade back in February. Your Current Champions  Men's Heavyweight Champion - Stipe Miocic (20-2) Stipe Miocic won the Heavyweight title in May of 2016, stopping Fabricio Verdum in front of his countrymen in a single round. He backed this feat up with another first-round stoppage of the most decorated Heavyweight of all time, Alistair Overeem, in Miocic's home town of Cleveland in September 2016. It was considered that the winner of the fight between Werdum and Cain Velasquez at UFC 207, a rematch of the fight where Werdum took Velasquez' belt from him in 2015, would be Miocic's next opponent, but Velasquez was forced out of this bout with yet another leg injury. Miocic defended his title in May 2017, with yet another first round KO of his opponent, making Junior dos Santos his second scalp as champion and equalling the all-time title defenses record. A dominating performance of Francis Ngannou in January 2018 saw Miocic become the first ever UFC Heavyweight champion to defend the belt three times in a row. The first UFC Superfight in many years has been booked for UFC 226 in July during International Fight Week, which will see Miocic put his title on the line against Daniel Cormier.  Men's Light Heavyweight Champion - Daniel Cormier (20-1-(1)) Daniel Cormier won the belt initially in May of 2015 against the heavy-hitting Anthony Johnson by rear-naked choke in the third round. Cormier defended his belt against Alexander Gustaffson in October of 2015 in a split decision. A planned rematch against Jon Jones was scheduled for UFC 200, which was called off after Jones tested positive for post-cycle therapy drugs. Cormier went on to fight Anderson Silva in a non-title bout on three days' notice. Cormier was slated to fight Anthony Johnson in a rematch for the belt in December, a match which did not took place due to Cormier suffering a groin adductor injury. The bout took place at UFC 210 in April, with Cormier defending the belt in under two rounds and Johnson riding off into the sunset with a surprise retirement. The rematch against Jon Jones finally took place at UFC 215 and saw Jones KO Cormier in the third round. Then Jones tested positive for Soviet-era steroids, and the CSAC overturned the fight result to a No Contest. The UFC dutifully stripped Jones of the championship, again, and it is now back around the waist of Cool MMA Dad Daniel Cormier. DC showed the world that there are indeed levels to this game, and defended easily against Volkan Oezdimir at UFC 220 in January. His next Light Heavyweight title defense is not booked, but this month he will face off against Stipe Miocic at UFC 226.  Men's Middleweight Champion - Robert Whittaker (20-4) Whittaker rode a seven-fight winning streak, including shutting down the deadly takedowns of Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza to slot himself into an Interim Middleweight championship match against Yoel "Soldier of God" Romero. The canny Australian showed incredible heart in taking it to the Cuban Olympic silver medalist over five rounds, and even with a severe knee injury coming in the first he managed to outpoint his opponent to take the unanimous decision. With Georges St-Pierre vacating the Middleweight championship in early December 2017, Whittaker has now been promoted to Undisputed Middleweight Champion. After a layoff to get his health back together, Whittaker took on Yoel Romero at UFC 225 in another great showdown between the two with Whittaker again taking the victory and continuing his reign as MW king.  Men's Welterweight Champion - Tyron Woodley (17-3-1) Woodley was promised a title shot against the Welterweight champion 17 months before the fight took place. After Robbie Lawler put in Fight Of The Year performances against Rory MacDonald in July 2015 and Carlos Condit in January 2016, Woodley went into their fight in July of 2016 as a significant underdog. This meant nothing, with Lawler going down to strikes in the first round. Woodley defended his belt against Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson, putting on an incredible fight that ended in a majority draw at UFC 205 in New York in November 2016. A rematch for this fight was held in March month at UFC 209, with Woodley again the winner in a stilted affair. He defended the title again at UFC 214 in late July 2017 against Demian Maia, following a conservative but sharp gameplan that saw him stop all 22 of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace's takedown attempts. A shoulder injury put Woodley on the shelf leading to an interim championship bout being held.  Men's Interim Welterweight Champion - Colby Covington (14-1) Covington earned a title shot after notching together a few solid wins in the division, but most would attribute his prominence in the main event scene to his cockiness and mouth. Specifically his antagonism of Brazil, in one instance earning him getting hit in the head by a boomerang thrown by UFC HW fighter Fabricio Werdum. Defeating Dong Hyun Kim & Damian Maia in decision victories helped make Covington a noticeable fighter. The "super villain" of the UFC then took on Rafael Dos Anjos in the co-main event at UFC 225 and was able to earn the judges nod placing himself as the Interim WW Champion. Following this Covington wasted no time trying to rile up the crowds and fellow fighters on social media. A match against fellow American Top Team fighter and current UFC WW Champion Tyron Woodly has not been announced as of yet.  Men's Lightweight Champion - Khabib Nurmagomedov (26-0) Finally, it's Khabib Time. After going 16-0 in regional promotions in Russia and The Ukraine, Khabib signed a deal with the UFC in late 2011. He then went on a near-unprecedented tear in the promotion, racking up a 9-fight UFC winning streak, including setting the record for the most takedowns in a single UFC fight with 21 against Abel Trujillo. While he seemed to have some issues with his weight, coming in heavy a few times and pulling out of a bout, and had recurring issues with his knees, causing the cancellation of more than one fight, it seemed like only time would be the barrier betewen him and a Lightweight title shot. Finally in 2018, the fight was booke for UFC 223 against Tony Ferguson. The week of the fight it seemed that literally nothing could go right, and after Ferguson seriously injured his left knee at a press event, and the late replacement Max Holloway was pulled out with 36 hours to go via a NYSAC ruling that he "didn't look good"  , finally it was settled that Al Iaquinta would be Nurmagomedov's  Men's Featherweight Champion - Max Holloway (19-3) Holloway put together a 9-fight win streak, with several Performance of the Night bonuses, before answering the call to contend for the Interim Featherweight Championship at UFC 206 in December 2016. Taking out Anthony Pettis with a body kick and punches late in the third round, he set himself up for a unification bout against Jose Aldo at UFC 212. At that event in early June 2017, he defeated Aldo in the third round with focused ground and pound, and unified the belts. Frankie Edgar was announced as Holloway's first defense, but with Edgar out with a broken face, the rematch with Jose Aldo Jr took place at UFC 218 in early December 2017. It was a carbon copy of the first match, with Aldo unable to weather the combinations of The Blessed One, this time being stopped in the third round. Holloway was again scheduled to defend against Frankie Edgar in March 2018, however a leg injury to the champion has forced that fight to the co-main with Brian Ortega stepping in, for what many consider to be a Number 1 Contender match. Ortega won that match handily, and is schedule to have his chance at the gold at UFC 226 in July.  Men's Bantamweight Champion - TJ Dillashaw (18-3) When he was announced as the coach on The Ultimate Fighter: Redemption against then-champion Cody Garbrandt, the outcome was planned to be a fight between the two for Garbrandt's Bantamweight championship. While the fight between the two was originally announced for July 8 2017 at UFC 213, Garbrandt dropped out with a back injury during May, and it was re-booked for UFC 217 in November. Dillashaw started a slight underdog, but got the job done in the second round with a solid right hook and follow up ground and pound. With his second title reign starting, Dillashaw's next title defense is currently scheduled to be at UFC 227 in August, a rematch against Garbrandt.  Men's Flyweight Champion - Demetrious Johnson (27-2-1) After winning the Flyweight Championship in September 2012 in a split decision against Joseph Benevidez, Johnson has amassed a 10-fight streak against the best that the division has had to offer. He has been so dominant that the UFC held an entire Ultimate Figher tournament to find his next challenger. The culmination of this was that Tim Elliott came back out of the MMA wilderness to lose a competitive match against Johnson in early December 2016. Johnson easily defended his title against Wilson Reis in April 2017, tying the all-time title defense record held by Anderson Silva. His next was scheduled to take place at UFC 215, with Ray Borg the chosen recipient of a life-altering mauling, but Borg pulled out with an unspecified illness. This match was re-scheduled for UFC 216 on the 7th of October, which saw Johnson soundly beat Borg for four and a half rounds. The champion then casually threw his opponent over his shoulder and grabbed his arm on the way down for a GOAT-level submission win. Johnson will next face Henry Cejudo for a second time at UFC 227 in August to defend his UFC Flyweight Championship.  Women's Featherweight Champion - Cristiana Justino (20–1 (1)) With the vacating of this championship by Germaine de Randamie in May 2017, a match was set up for UFC 214 between Justino and Megan Anderson. Anderson pulled out of the fight in late June, and was replaced by current Invicta FC Bantamweight Champion Tonya Evinger. The significantly larger fighter on the day, Justino dominated a one-sided affair and won the fight in the third round with brutal knee strikes. Justino defended her championship against Holly Holm at UFC 219 in December 2017, again being the much larger fighter and keeping Holm at bay to take a comprehensive decision victory. Justino made her next defense against promotional newcomer Yana Kunitskaya in March 2018, flattening another promotional newcomer and Featherweight debutant in a very one-sided matchup.  Women's Bantamweight Champion - Amanda Nunes (16-4) Nunes headlined UFC 200 in July of 2016, putting a vicious beating on Miesha Tate and securing a rear-nake choke victory in a little over three minutes. She backed this up with a brutal 48-second TKO victory against former Women's Bantamweight Champion and WMMA pioneer Rounda Rousey in late December 2016. Nunes was slated to take on Valentina Shevchenko in a rematch of their March 2016 fight, with that match being moved to UFC 215 in September 2017. Nunes retained by a razor-thin split decision. Her next fight was against Raquel Pennington at UFC 224, which was held this month in Rio de Janeiro. Nunes spent four rounds mauling Pennington, then pounded out a clearly already finished Pennington in the fifth, to retain her Championship.  Women's Flyweight Champion - Nicco Montaño (4-2) After amassing a 5-0 record as an amateur, Nicco turned pro in late 2015. Going 3-2 before signing up to The Ultimate Fighter: A New World Champion, Nicco used her tenacity and solid striking game to garner three decision wins in a row on the reality show. Originally slated to face Sijara Eubanks at the TUF Finale, she ended up taking out a hard-fought decision victory over Goon favourite Roxanne Modaferri to become the first UFC Women's Flyweight champion. No defense is announced at this stage, but Valentina Shevchenko has been announced as the number 1 contender. Montaño was recently in a social media feud with Ariel Helwani over the latter's claims that she's ducking or scared of Shevchenko, with Montaño responding with the fact she had recently had tonsil and adenoid surgery and hasn't been able to train.  Women's Strawweight Champion - Rose Namajunas (11-3) After cleaning out the Women's Strawweight division, Joanna Jędrzejczyk seemed to have no more mountains to conquer. After beating Michelle Waterson by rear-naked choke in April 2017, Namajunas was announced as the next contender for want of any other new challengers. In a massive upset, Namajunas beat Jędrzejczyk by TKO in the first round of their championship fight at UFC 217. A rematch for this fight took place at UFC 223 in April 2018, and while it took longer to decide the result was the same, with Namajunas taking a solid unanimous decision over the former champion. No title defense is scheduled at this stage. I'm actually finally watching UFC 225 right now and its on. It reminds me of so many of the redneck fights I used to work as event staff at in college. Edit - Jackson no looking punching Punk's face while in Punk's guard.

In my mind immediate rematches make sense if the fight is a split decision, NC due to a random issue or one guy is rocked horribly but gets a quick comeback KO a la Scott Smith.Troxartas posted:Didn't he have like a pituitary gland tumor or something? TJ was in trouble but not "seconds from being stopped" because Garbrandt didnt push him and TJ spent the rest of the round blocking/moving way more. TJ also had better footwork and methods to finish the fight than Cody did. The headkicks by TJ were pretty effective.

I agree with Rogan that an eyepoke should be an immediate 1 pt reduction. The fact it happens so regularly means the new closed hand rule isn't exactly working (assuming the SAC is using the new "unified" rules). That or change the glives so they're a bit more curved. Bellator made some new glove like that if I remember correctly.

I enjoy Cerrone as a fighter but when he referred to a gun sounding like a "f****ot farting" on his JRE episode I easily decided to not care about him past if he receives a solid KO or not.

Smith looked really good in the fight even though he's unranked and will never fight for the title in NY. It's a shame Gus is out of the fight at 227 because that could've been a fun fight. Also how the hell did smith get to 185lbs? He looked skinny at 205lbs and the dude is 6'4".

The UFC just has too many events which is a thing Poirier pointed out. Nobody will be talking about his win over Alvarez in a week because there's another event. That's not a horrible thing but it does contribute to the "fatigue" people are having with the events.

Honestly if ESPN employs the DWTNCS model of fights with just a bit of fluff for their broadcasts (aka no more 7 hour shows) of fight nights, it'd be fine. I'd even be on board with a weekly event but i doubt the UFC wants to schedule stuff like that due to all the other moving parts involved to do so.
