So the puzzle thing around his neck is actually a soul jar for an ancient Pharaoh of Egypt who ultimately is trying to regain his memories and get to the afterlife. The deeper voice is the "Pharaoh"'s voice/him being in control, which he is for the majority of the actual duels.
