quote:This is a story about you. A tale about the inside of your body. According to a new study, the human body consists of approximately 37 trillion cells. These cells are hard at work every day within a world that is your body. From the oxygen carrying Red Blood Cells to the bacteria fighting White Blood Cells, get to know the unsung heroes and the drama that unfolds inside you! Hataraku Saibou/Cells at Work! is basically Osmosis Jones by way of Japan. It's a story about the daily goings on of the human body with a particular focus on the always working immune system. The series is produced by David Production, who's mostly known for relatively unknown series called Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. PV1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ek39M_lYUtE PV2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMXWvvjAJek Erythrocyte/Red blood cell - Red blood cells carry oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body and keep them oxygenated. Our protagonist is a newbie RBC who frequently gets lost, but strives to do their best. CV: Hanazawa Kana (You should know who this is) Leukocyte/White blood cell (Neutrophil) - White blood cells are one of the major components of the immune system. The white ones shown are specifically Neutrophil, the most common type of WBC. Our protagonist is the strong silent type. CV: Maeno Tomoaki Killer T Cell/Cytotoxic T cell - Killer T cells are a type of lymphocyte that's specialized in killing infected, damaged or cancerous cells. CV: Daisuke Ono (Notably, he's also the VA for Jotaro) Macrophage - Macrophages are a special type of WBC that kills foreign bodies, cleans up dead cells and finds antigens for use by other T cells. They are very powerful. CV: Kikuko Inoue Platelet - Platelets are one of the smallest cells in the human body. Their job is to gather together and block wounds to stop bleeding. They are extremely cute and can stop your heart if you're not careful. CV: Maria Naganawa (Notable roles: Kanna Kamui from Maidragon, Tamaki Hondafrom Magic of Stella) Helper T cell/T helper cell - Helper T cells manage the immune response in the body by signalling other T cells to the presence of foreign cells and activating other cells in the immune system. CV: Takahiro Sakurai (Notably, also the VA for Kishibe Rohan from Jojo) Regulatory T cell - Regulatory T cells assist in the regulation of the immune system including autoimmune disease prevention and managing antigen tolerance. In this series, it's mostly assisting Helper T cell. CV: Saori Hayami Also appearing: Eosinophil, Dendritic cell, Memory cell, Mast cell, B cell The manga is currently published in English by Kodansha comics and is currently being streamed by Crunchyroll. It's a monthly series and each volume has 5-6 chapters. There's already just enough material to make it two seasons if they wanted.

Phobophilia posted:Well it’s no drama if the person is young and healthy, hence you make the person a slovenly disgusting piece of poo poo The body withstands countless bacterial attacks every day. Almost all of them are pretty much negligible though as the immune system is functioning as it's supposed to. When actual physical symptoms appear, that's an indicator that the cellular immune system is reaching the max of its capabilities and needs to employ other, larger scale methods, to handle things. This can be at the cost of other parts of the body like fevers or allergic reactions. Think about this: How many germs and bacteria do you think you inhale on a given day? How many germs do you think enter your body through your mouth from food or other things put in there? 99% of the time, there's pretty much no indicator that your body has been repelling all sorts of invasions around the clock.

Fun fact about Eosinophil: It's presence usually increases, not just in the presence of parasites, but also in individuals with asthma playing one of the cell types in autoimmune function. As far as Basophil is concerned, it's actually another histamine cell like the Mast cell (and both, along with Eosinophil are present in allergic reactions), but it runs around the bloodstream instead of with the tissues. Hopefully we see more of them in the Allergy episode Next ep is supposed to be chapter 2 where it introduces B Cell and Memory T cell as well as the first example of how the series treats synthetic medicines.

Basophil is sorta implied to do stuff with allergies since it can also produce histamine. Eosinophil otoh, makes a bunch of enzymes for loving up parasites including enzymes that help make hydrogen peroxide and hydrogen bromide (at least according to Wiki). Eosinophil also shows up for allergic reactions, so hopefully they're get an anime original appearance in the next episode while the Mast cell makes things worse.

Boksi posted:Looks like I picked a great time to start watching this series, now I gotta wait a whole week for a resolution to this cliffhanger The Cancer portion also probably seems a little too long for a single episode, especially with all of the action sequences, but probably not long enough to fill two episodes without stretching a few things. The ideal compromise is to have a half episode of something lighter and then the first third of the Cancer cell portion.

The only exceptions are within the digestive organs and even then they have their own smorgasbord of defenses and defensive reactions as well as strange residents. IMO, they missed an opportunity portraying the stomach and intestines as something other than just a food processing plant.

The hemorrhagic shock is a big deal, but the heatstroke one isn't too abnormal with how often it seems people pass out from the heat in anime. Reckless is pretty apt for a teenager though. It's possible, but unlikely that it's a child, but a preteen may be possible

TerminusEst13 posted:They've said the body's immune system is compromised, too, so that could also point at a variety of factors. I think when they say it was compromised, it was not what one would call medically compromised. I think in the context, it was meant like how security is compromised in a breach, i.e. something got through the outer defenses. The latter happens a lot in the human body, but usually nothing comes of it since it's handled so quickly.

One weird inconsistency is that open wounds are depicted as holes in the ground while things like needles are shown as coming from on high. Imo, with the brain, We've not seen any sort of neurons yet so it may well be that the brain is just one large machine in a clean room with astrocytes getting stuff delivered to them and making sure everything's running properly. Alternatively, the neurons in the brain work in a sealed complex on computers processing sorry data and feeding it to the body with no contact with other cells besides the glial cells that basically take care of them. Think office drones almost permanent planted in chairs with servants waiting on them hand and foot.

That'd be the "Brain is represented as a giant computer in a clean room" thing. Blood-brain barrier means that practically nothing can get in other than what the blood cells are delivering, and even then, it's probably just bank-teller style windows or some sort of dumbwaiter system where there's minimal interaction between cells on either side of the barrier, if at all.

There's enough material in the manga right now to make half a season I believe. It's also a lot more continuous rather than stand-alone episodes.
