You can buy animals from Holy Nation farms and traveling nomads. There's also farm shops in cities sometimes that sells animals.

North of Stack is a good location for a base, there should be a spot with decent water iron and copper for resources, but there was constant bandit and bonedogs groups running around there last time I built a base there.

Keep in mind if your base is event remotely near a nation they'll send taxmen at you and demand 3k every week or so.

Basically anywhere you build a base you're going to have to deal with assholes unless you build it in the middle of nowhere.

poo poo i'm aiming to build out in the swamp because I assume all the spiders will get everyone else to gently caress off once I get my walls up.

I've got an entirely human crew without any limb replacements so far, so I figure what i'll do is hire a bunch of mercs and make my way out to the swamp (i've made about 60k so far) and let them kill everything while i build, I just need to find a decent place. I don't mind having to do runs to towns for building supplies, mostly because I currently have a tiny outpost that's been stockpiling it, i've got like 3 garru's worth and I can always go stock up on some more.

How do multiple outposts work in relation to hiring mercs? There only seems to be two options, so I don't know how i'd ask them to defend my second outpost rather than my first, unless that option appears when you have two.

Also I defeated my first bandit raid by selecting "stab him in the face" when the dust boss tried talking to me. Whole raid ran off and didn't come back for a week or two, which was more than enough time for me to get up walls and some help.

E: Also yes, the emergent gameplay is insane. I like how occasionally i'll come across dudes with bounties that I can take down (my character has a high assassin skill from starting every fight with a *thunk*) and it'll entirely change my plans.

Or how I was starving so I broke into a holy nation bakery and managed to loot a weeks worth of food.

Even just following caravans from town to town for safety if you're alone and underskilled is pretty legit because you can loot anything they kill.

How will this work out if I've got a skeleton, shek and hiver on the crew? I don't want them to get killed by the roving murder squads the holy assholes send out every now and then for the crime of existing.

That's holy nation territory, the skeleton is a no go, they'll straight up attack if they see them. If you have a male greenlander, you can convince the guards that the hiver and the shek (i don't actually know if shek are a problem) are your slaves.

Considering the skeleton is currently making 90% of all the money I get through churning out bandannas I'll have to go somewhere else. Its good to know that I can potentially use the hiver and shek near them, though.

Edit: Is there a sustainable way to get raw meat? I'm thinking about feeding bonedogs and I don't want to be held hostage by random spawning wild goats or bulls.

Not really, but honestly i've found that slaughtering one herd will keep going going for a long rear end time.

I took down 5 garru and got enough meat to fill up 2 backpacks.

e: Also i'm pretty sure they eat sever'd limbs if you kill someone hard enough.

The other problem I have with hunting wild animals is that I'm pretty certain they'd kick my rear end. I got lucky when 2 bull herds were close enough to Stack that I could let the guards kill them but I've cooked all of that meat.

Depends on how many their are and how many you have.

Bonedogs and garru loving hurt, but goats aren't so bad and if you have enough people you can kill 2 or 3 before they take you all down. Goats won't actually kill you, so if you leave a guy further away he can heal you all up after you've taken out some goats and the rest have left.

If you knock down an animal and loot it, it immediately dies. So when one goes down take one meat out of its inventory to ensure it stays down.

Shek definitely are. Also you can get through the conscription events by having a male greenlander but occasionally they will say they are taking them to work in the mines near Blister Hill and there didn't seem to be any peaceful way through that I could find. Which sucks because otherwise Okran's Pride would be like the perfect place for an early base. Honestly it might be if you can get by with just greenlanders. Unfortunately half my party was Shek at that point, so that base had to be abandoned.

edit: Do Bonedogs only eat raw meat? I suppose it would make sense, but I can feed my Garru protein cubes and those weird meat tubes, which seems pretty counter to the whole being a herbivore thing.

You know, I never really thought about it but you're right, garru shouldn't require any meat at all, but they do. Wheatgrass would make more sense.

Bonedogs eat foul meat as well, so you can always load someone up with that. Big bonus for it not getting cooked if you have anyone set to auto cook meat.

I'm a bit disappointed that their doesn't seem to be a way to send mercs to defend the outpost of your choosing if you have multiple, so tonight before I leave i'm going to be reimporting the game and leaving the buildings option ticked off.

No, it'll get raided to gently caress. I hadn't even finished building anything yet and a horde of 15 ninja's decided to raid the place.

I ran the gently caress away and they stood around for a while before realizing I literally had nothing and buggering off.

E: A prayer day group came around and didn't care that I had a skeleton, shek and 2 hivers clearly visible. I just had to say the prayer and they were 100% fine with everything.

As far as I know the player can't actually consume alcohol. Not sure if it's any different for NPCs but I would be surprised.

I think there is a mod for the outpost thing? Dunno if it's still up to date though.

As for the second, yes. But I'd save just before you import just in case.

I'd actually suggest just installing like a 2.5x xp rate mod and you'll get your guys up to basic combat speed much more quickly. Early game is still a bitch, but it becomes a bit less grindy. You can defend any outpost with like 4 or 5 well geared high level fighters. That said, it's kinda fun how powerless your dudes are the first time. After the first time I wasn't in a rush to repeat it though.

Also once you start getting some cash and a couple decently leveled fighters, send a guy (either a skeleton or someone with a lot of acid rain resistant clothing) out to the scraphouse in the deadlands and buy yourself some endgame weapons. The edgewalker 3s are the best in the game (aside from meitou grade weapons, but those are a pain to aquire), though all the skeleton smith weapons are really strong. Expect to spend 30-50k a piece, but they're totally worth it. Getting edgewalker weapons is probably the single biggest power jump in the game. Don't put really nice weapons on low level guys, they'll get knocked out and have their weapons taken from them, save them for your very best fighters.

Also there is zero reason you shouldn't have an armor workshop going in the background in one of the cities for cash, though eventually being able to turn out specialist/masterwork grade armor will make your guys so so so much better. IMO for roaming guys err on the side of lighter armor (plate jacket, drifter boots, chain pants, etc.). For guys who are just going to hang out in base keeping it safe, put them in the heaviest armor possible since the athletic penalties wont matter.

I had a 15 strong dust bandit group attack me while I was still getting walls set up. I couldn't take them in a straight fight so I split my guys up and got "lucky", 5 of them chased my 9 an squad while the others headed into my base to loot. I managed to regroup and defeat the bandits that chased me but took some damage in the process, but thankfully it didn't look like the bandits were in a hurry to leave my building so I tried to finish building the walls and heal up a bit before trying to tackle them.

Then the starving bandits came.

about 20 of the fuckers jumped me while I was trying to get my walls up and in the confusion 1 of my guys went down and the others were hurt, so I ran everyone who could the hell away hoping to draw them off. Maybe 5 of them followed, the rest went into my base. My troops could more or less handle the starving bandits 1 on 1, so after everyone wrapped up their respective fights I regrouped again to try and figure out what to do about the now 25ish enemies all standing in my main building.

I poked one of my guys heads in to see what the hell was going on and saw that the two sides were engaged in a massive pitched, with the starving bandits just about holding on due to sheer weight of numbers. I considered for a moment letting it play out but :black101: won out and I joined the brawl.

Another 3 of my guys went down, mostly due to enemies behind me reviving and getting cheap shots in while I was trying to keep a coherent battle line but I eventually triumphed! I'm now the proud owner of way too many corpses to deal with and have half of my guys battered to poo poo, my walls still incomplete and I'm pretty sure my crops have all rotted on the vine, but nobody died or lost a limb and everyone came out of it with some heft stat boosts.

I was going to move my base last night but i've been getting attacked so often i've decided to just keep it and continue churning out research and food, mainly because I want to train up more before going to the swamps. My guys are levelling up pretty well, the weapons from the guys are selling well enough, etc.

Part of my training involves putting prisoners in cages, healing them up and letting them go one at a time, so my turret gunners at the base have something to shoot at when they run away.

Starving bandit fights are fantastic. Big groups of 30 are heading at me, before i'd run away from five of them, now i look at 30 and go "alright, cool, bring out the guys with the big swords".

I took a fresh character and got good at stealth and went into Skinner's Roam where I found a hungry bandit town, so I started knocking them all out in the middle of the night and looting their weapons and armor, chucking them to the ground so they will be unable to do much of anything in a fight. Then I found out that oops they're actually friendly and their queen is nice but I had already pissed off the faction enough that I had to brutally murder them all while they were effectively defenseless, thus becoming more powerful. Game good.

I hope they add a random start option it'd be cool to just plop in some nowhere spot in the world every time I want to play.

Yeah, I turned down the hunger by like, half. Wish i'd done the same for research. Hunger is insane in this game, pretty sure the only real way to survive on a pure non edited run is to basically always be stealing whatever people leave out until you're good enough to steal from chests.

(if you don't want to mine, that is).

I've been watching someone else play and didn't realise that a martial artist learns a bunch of sick kicks and punches so now I want to teach my character the way of the fist. Gonna make a small hut, strip down a fairly tough enemy (band of bones are sure to attack me at some point again), then engage them in a fist fight until I learn how to not be terrible at it.

I'll let the enemy go (run the gauntlet) after, i'm only mostly a monster.

I guess that makes sense, a ton of the posts about this game seem like they're written by teenagers and they're all about letting the people who annoy them crawl around in the dirt with no legs or tossing their enemies into beak thing nests and selling people into slavery.

Then again, it's the game maker, too: getting eaten alive is like the #1 threat in the game.
