You get a phone call from the CEO of your company in the middle of dinnertime with your family. He says into your ear, "I need you back at the office. We're building a sub to save those cave kids."

To finish eating dinner, go to page 42.

lol if you think anyone working for a silicon valley billionaire has a family anymore

i once got paid to do some "consultancy" on electric vehicles like 10+ years ago (specifically involving application of a specific drivetrain to them but i didn't really know what i was doing tbh) and one of the few things i can remember is that batteries are super sensitive to their charge and discharge cycle so i can actually legitimately see why they'd hide the "extra range" feature because it's really just using the 10% of the battery that never gets discharged in the normal work cycle because it trashes your overall battery life to do that. so i guess anyone that uses it probably automatically invalidates their battery warranty or whatever.

of course that assumes that battery doesn't just yolo itself out of existence first

Rex-Goliath posted:

like, 'well our tech really isn't THAT hard to learn if you're willing to find competent workers and take a month or two to train them up you should have no problem' isn't at all an acceptable answer. if you aren't offering them a fresh vein of ripe h-2bs to exploit then it's going to be one hell of a hard sell

There's some sort of mental disease about IT/tech management that causes them to start huffing fumes from the accountants and believe that people are all spheres of uniform density and can be interchanged with zero consequence.

like literally the idea of our cio was/is "fire contractors , replace with grads" because we spend too much money on contractors, but the reason we spend so much money is 1) experienced contractors cost money and 2)they have spent years refusing to hire permanent staff to reduce costs and numbers of people on the books so there is very little long term knowledge in permanent staff and the idea that you can just use fresh graduates as a replacement is laughable and will tank the ability to do anything. not to mention the 6 month lead time to get anyone new to learn our hosed up processes. The same happens with offshoring.

idk it's like musk and manufacturing: fail to understand the problem, ignore input from people who do understand it because it conflicts with your view, believe your own hype about the solution (because you must be smart if you're the cio/ceo right)and then blame someone else for the fact it hasn't fixed the issue

my dad worked for IBM in the 70s though and he says it's the same poo poo he used to deal with so in summary: people are the problem
