i had to fix a corrupt db from encoding issues once. what a poo poo show. there is enough overlap between utf8 and latin1 that a large set of common characters still work fine. smart quotes are not in that set.

Shame Boy posted:there's an old car talk episode where they talk about a guy who wrote in to tell them he worked on a road crew and their favorite job was filling potholes because it was comparatively easy, so every time they'd go out to fill a pothole they'd pour a little bit of the stuff they use to wash the shovels afterwards (kerosene I think?) nearby to soften up the asphalt in a new spot, and soon they had a lovely rotating crop of perpetual potholes to fill. some spots in atlanta have perma potholes because of drainage issues. theres a spot i had to drive through daily for a year that theyd fix and then the next rain (shortly after invariably) itd be hosed as hell again. some spots are just really poorly setup for heavily trafficked roads.

The_Franz posted:the one time my brother took a train in the us it turned a route that was an 8 hour drive into a 16 hour journey, 4 of which were sitting stopped on a spur waiting for freight traffic to pass. he got to his destination in the middle of the night and the station was not in the best neighborhood. until there exists high speed rail that can do, say, chicago to nyc in under 8 hours for under $100, long distance train travel in the us just isn't worth it i took a 3 hour bus ride and that was enough for me to "never again". it was the middle of summer and the ac broke down 20 minutes in.

AnoHito posted:iirc, they can also backfire and gently caress up companies if a ton of people decide to actually go for binding arbitration, since they would have to pay for every single case individually, and then potentially end up losing and paying out to everyone anyway. Didn't this happen to Uber, and they tried to get a judge to quash them but he said "no, this is the agreement you entered with them"?
