i had to fix a corrupt db from encoding issues once. what a poo poo show. there is enough overlap between utf8 and latin1 that a large set of common characters still work fine. smart quotes are not in that set.

Shame Boy posted:

there's an old car talk episode where they talk about a guy who wrote in to tell them he worked on a road crew and their favorite job was filling potholes because it was comparatively easy, so every time they'd go out to fill a pothole they'd pour a little bit of the stuff they use to wash the shovels afterwards (kerosene I think?) nearby to soften up the asphalt in a new spot, and soon they had a lovely rotating crop of perpetual potholes to fill.

i mean it kinda seems like one of those bullshit stories conservatives make up to somehow justify cutting construction crew benefits in their broken brains but eh. there's a few places on a road near me that seem to form potholes suspiciously fast, like within a month of the previous one being patched, and I'm thinking something funny's going on there... then again the ground around here tends to be saturated-wet pretty often and i'm sure erosion is a huge problem too, hmm

some spots in atlanta have perma potholes because of drainage issues. theres a spot i had to drive through daily for a year that theyd fix and then the next rain (shortly after invariably) itd be hosed as hell again.

some spots are just really poorly setup for heavily trafficked roads.

that's a really wonky guess for how they messed it up, when the easy and stupid way to code it is consistent with the observation:

code:
while(true) {
  sleep(1000);
  drawClock(getTimeInSeconds());
}
(alt. with some timer somewhere) the drift just being the little quanta roundoffs (alt. delays in dequeueing the timer) of the thread waking up.

getTimeInSeconds is just incrementing an int from 0 -> 60 and not actually a clock

the one time my brother took a train in the us it turned a route that was an 8 hour drive into a 16 hour journey, 4 of which were sitting stopped on a spur waiting for freight traffic to pass. he got to his destination in the middle of the night and the station was not in the best neighborhood. until there exists high speed rail that can do, say, chicago to nyc in under 8 hours for under $100, long distance train travel in the us just isn't worth it

an acquaintance of mine actually took a bus from near the eastern coast of the us to vancouver bc and back to visit his brother. 5 days each way. apparently, upon disembarking, he had the kind of look in his eyes normally reserved for people returning from combat. his first statement was "i am never doing that again"

i took a 3 hour bus ride and that was enough for me to "never again". it was the middle of summer and the ac broke down 20 minutes in.

also the Alex Jones mistake … they got sent a message saying along the lines of “did you mean to send us this? if not tell us and we will purge it” and they never responded. it was a two stage huge failure !
