So the contract with the convention center is split in 3 - Boring gets paid 1/3 for completion of the tunnels, 1/3 for completion of stations and the last 1/3 is for demonstrating they can move 4400 people/hour. Fire codes only allows 800 people/hour in a given station though. They also have to move a certain number of people at events or pay a 300k fine per event up to 4,5 million. So lots of entertainment to come.

Moving 37 passengers per minute with cars that hold a maximum of three people (& driver), require longer dwell time for people to get in and out compared to trains (because cars, and especially when passengers carry bags etc. like is usual during conventions) and fire code restrictions on the amount of people allowed in stations doesn't really seem doable. If they manage it, that's not going to be typical throughput but some highly orchestrated operation. Fame Douglas has issued a correction as of 20:10 on Apr 9, 2021 |

If they made it so that teslas can do spirals in those tunnels that would make it instantly cool, instead of lame taxi in tube.

You're probably thinking of the rapids ones where you're in a huge rigid raft full of volvo seats. Lazy river is like a walking-speed current with no underwater obstacles so it stays nice and flat, and you just float along in it. It's pretty low risk of drowning because it's only about 4 feet deep but if you start getting vegas levels of inebriation all bets are off gently caress imagine being the guy who drowned in a vegas lazy river loop on the strip, your dead rear end would probably be scooting along the bottom for hours before anyone noticed

I've been inspired by the radical idea of making tunnels less expensive by just building smaller ones and come up with buildings but smaller. Instead of a 10 story building my company will build a 5 story one for half the price. Please don't steal my disruption idea

losing 33% on the contract and then getting hit for another nearly 10% on the total potential value would be incredible, and yet somehow i have my doubts about enforcement of those penalties

The Venetian has a river that runs through the whole thing Venice style and I'm not aware of anyone drowning in it. I really wish Vegas had some decent mass transportation systems. I have no problem walking up and down the strip even if it takes awhile, but when I need to get anywhere off-strip I have to Uber and that basically then involves finding the designated ride share area which probably has you having to go to the proper casino and work your way through the maze to get to the designated area in the parking lot. And at the end of the day triple checking all your ride summaries because the drivers there almost all slam the I'M HERE button as soon as they get within eye sight of the casino and then spend 10-15 minutes working their way to you so they are almost guaranteed to have hit you with a "you were late" charge without letting you know. Also you only get Uber credit back for contesting that charge, not an actual refund. plz just give me a monorail or something plz

Fame Douglas posted:Las Vegas could expand their equally stupid monorail to at least service the airport. The construction costs on that thing is enormously expensive. They approved an expansion leg to the football stadium but there is no financial will for it. Musk's Tunnel is stupid, but he's offering a cheap way to tunnel through the caliche that has made this town a non-starter for underground transportation. The problem is I think he's only willing to do it if he can use it for this laughable Tesla commercial. All Musk extensions confirmed beyond the convention center peoplemover are being paid for entirely by casinos. Like the one going under that golf course is just replacing a shuttle bus that the casino used to occasionally run to the convention center. The Strip is a weird exemption to civic planning policy because it's deliberately not designed to service locals except to feed them in and out of work as quickly as possible, and there is no need to concern about income disparity since everything is built for people abandoning all sense of personal austerity that they might have in any other city. It is functionally no different than a giant mining pit or warehouse of cubicles in that it's not intended to be your habitat for more than a few hours. World War Mammories posted:trying to imagine the type of person who would look at this scale of distance and choose not to walk That stretch of Desert Inn doesn't intersect with the Strip or even have sidewalks. It's a super-arterial that's meant to provide quick access between east and west sides of town by denying you any exits to the big popular tourist destination in the middle of it all. The positive side of this from a transit standpoint is that it makes it a good street for express buses to get residents who don't work in the industry from one side of town to another.
