So I've only got peripheral experience with computer vision. But from what I've witnessed, the performance in the video isn't actually bad at all. I mean you could smooth the output to make it less jagged. And I don't know whether the thing makes frame-to-frame predictions of the objects it sees (e.g. tries to anticipate where things should be in order not lose them) but I've certainly seen worse.

Doesn't mean you should use that to steer a 2 ton death machine through urban traffic but in and of itself I think that computer vision is fine

we monitor many frequencies. we listen always. came a voice, out of the babel of tongues, speaking to us. it played us a mighty dub.
the issue is that's all it's using. it doesn't have any persistence, it's trying to navigate real world scenarios based on the data in the current frame. also, while not demonstrated in that video, it basically doesn't work at all above a certain speed. that's a ridiculous model for autonomous driving.

Yeah I agree completely. But whenever that link popus up people act as though the object recognition itself is super shite when in fact it's actually not. It's just complete techbro madness to basically slave the accelerator and steering wheel to that system and call the thing auto pilot.

Diluting that distinction will cloud who holds responsibility for this disaster. It's not that the porgrammers were just too lazy and 'let Elon down'. It's that the entire concept that Tesla is pursuing under Musk is entirely unrealistic and unsafe.

IMO this needs to be stressed. If you (wrongly imo) blame the lethal accidents just on the object recognition, you kind of let Elon off the hook.

Well yeah, just cause they don't have dealerships doesn't mean they don't want to make money. They aren't going to sell a second hand car for anything near it's asking price. The cars done 20k miles in a year. That price sounds completely and totally reasonable, if you walked into a dealer for any brand you'd be lucky to get that offer tbqh

In another thread goons were talking about dudes working the canadian mines or oil jacks or something who were buying brand new 70k trucks every year and only getting ~20k tradein on the previous years model, if that puts it into perspective. As soon as you drive off the lot you lose money on a new car, new cars are incredibly dumb purchases if their value is something you worry about

Yeah 32k seems pretty reasonable, you'd get offered like 50% of the cars total value by any other car dealer as soon as you drove it off the lot
