Well at least it's a properly ventilated working area. Good job Elon But seriously: I do not understand this. This does not make sense to me. Maybe they are illegally painting their cars somewhere they shouldn't. But out in the open? You can hardly accurately paint hobby projects that way. It would not only have been necessary for proper working, it would also have been absolutely trivial to just erect a plastic tent around the working zone. And is that area only used for red paint? I have a hard time believing this because you would have to intentionally sabotage your project in order to do this.

You mean shorting, right? I think the reference OP brought up was actually about buying a companies credit default swap. Since these work like an insurance against that company's default, you'd see their price rack up dramatically as the company irks closer to a default. That's what eventually happened in the big short, everyone was going bankrupt and the dude's holding the insurance against that made bank.

Megillah Gorilla posted:Aircraft computer systems run on the "5 nines" concept of 99.999% uptime, or down-time of 5.26 minutes per year. Because lives depend on that poo poo. IMO 99.999% is not good enough for a personal car. Pilots are not end users in the same sense as car drivers are. If a pilot gets a computer readout that the fuel pressure is low, they know how to verify the reading with an analogue gauge. They can check whether the engine is still getting fuel. They know if they can switch on some back up system. If all that fails, they know if it's possible to turn that engine off and continue the flight plan. If not, they know exactly how far they can still get and which airport they can touch down. They know precisely what to tell the ground crew afterwards. In a consumer vehicle the manufacturer must be prepared that there's a 85 year old granny steering the car who only knows that one pedal is 'gotta go fast' and the other pedal is 'not gotta go fast'. WTF is that nana supposed to do when she wants to get out of the car and the computer says 'Nuh uh the media center has shat itself you're not going anywhere'? Do they expect the 'people who make youtube comments' audience to sit through weeks-long training courses that teach how to debug their cars?
