Give this problem and the same amount of money to a group of college seniors for a capstone project and they would have at least given you something autonomous.

Ffs, you can just put colored lines/QR codes/magnetic strips on the ground for an AGV to follow if you're that opposed to laying actual rail lines.
I've seen people do similar with a Lego Mindstorms kit. It's really not all that difficult. This whole demonstration is just ridiculous

Some analog proximity sensors on the sides of the car facing the tunnel walls , a PID controller to ensure the values on each side stay relatively the same via steering output, bingo bongo give me money Elon you stupid bitch

They could have installed magnets in the walls and kept the cars perfectly aligned using cheap loving Hall effect sensors. Or, one more step, they could have added a guiding structure that the car can't shift off of. Perhaps a rail of some sort.

Starlink's 1700 satellites are responsible for the majority of close encounters with other satellites (approach within less than 1km), with 1600 per week. 1100 of those are with other Starlink satellites, 500 with other operators. Competitor OneWeb has 250 satellites in orbit and generate 80 alerts per week. Kessler syndrome, here we come!
