Just a thought. I think I'm gonna keep it as headcanon for now; Musk is really bad at PR which is funny, but it's pretty obvious that a large amount of people are digging on him absolutely as hard as they can, which is also funny.

He's sooooooo ingrained in the MILC that he's not going to unfortunately be able to go anywhere; that MAY be why he's being targeted for it if it's a Peter Thiel/Cambridge Analytica/Trump/Wikileaks/(whatever you want to call that giant retarded blob of incels) thing.

Battery is the most expensive component and loses like 5-10% of it's max capacity per year (or thereabouts). People freak out and sell them early when they see the battery losing capacity. Plus the tax credit is basically built into the initial price and immediately falls off.

I own a used Leaf and my job has free EV charging, it's pretty loving nice.

Wheeee posted:

so heres the thing about EVs: all of their advantages come from the electric drive motors, not the batteries. batteries are in fact terrible, as even the most expensive and modern battery technology has power specific density that's around an order of magnitude lower than gasoline (~100-200 Wh/kg for lithium ion batteries vs ~13,000 Wh/kg for gasoline), which would be kind of poo poo even if batteries didnt take hours to charge. which they do

but theres another huge problem with batteries that makes buying an electric car stupid as gently caress: they degrade and lose capacity over time. this used to be a fear with regard to the Prius, but since the Prius is a series-parallel hybrid (the battery is charged by the onboard ICE in combination with regenerative braking) the total capacity of the battery isnt nearly as important as in a pure EV, making loss of battery capacity a relatively minor issue. in a pure EV however, which relies entirely upon the battery, losing capacity means losing range. all batteries are subject to this, and the conditions in which cars operate (extreme temperatures) tend to accelerate this degradation beyond what youre used to seeing in your phone or laptop

that bit about temperatures is important: smart electric vehicle design will incorporate active battery thermal management, effectively cooling, to extend the life of the battery. the Nissan Leaf does not use thermal management, and so the batteries in them tend to degrade rapidly, to the point that some first-generation Leaf owners are down to around 50 miles of range on a full charge

buying an electric car is loving stupid, buying a used electric car is even more stupid

The new generation looks better, and maybe a little more range-suited to my daily delivery route, but I live in an apartment, alas

The first generation doesn't seem like a good bet

if you seriously care about how much money you spend on gas, buy a Prius, Prius Prime, Volt, or similar. electric cars are a gimmick outside of very specific use cases
