Whatever we do, we shouldn't attack. We have 9 swords, no magic devoted to war, no good war blessings, and our warleader isn't a one-man army. Either we hope we get left alone, or we diplomance and attack together.

We have effectively no military. They're already here so by the time someone gets back from the starshines, even if they agree to help, the trolls will have already eaten their fill. Nothing we can do but hope they go away.

In my experience (granted, this experience comes from King of Dragon Pass) passivity breeds resentment amongst the clan, especially if the trolls find us anyway and eat our goats and people. The clan will then accuse the ring of just letting bad things happen to the people. Let's see if we can coordinate an attack against the Starshine instead.

Small raid events and the like generally let you send up to 20 swords if you have them and 20 bows. On small raid events that don't involve stealth I'll just Send Everyone.

I did something I should have before and checked out our treasures. We have: - Invisible Drum: Increases the chance will aid your shamans after they have been successfully called. This is pretty good, especially if your magicians are garbage. We don't really have that problem but it still makes it more likely we'll get a multi-year commitment from a single invocation. - Shining Sun Mask: Brings courage to the fearful. -- Coordinate an attack with the Starshines. We rallied to defend ourselves, and warned the Starshines. We get to send a diplomat to the Starshines. There is no reason not to send our best one, so Vurana, our Gamari-devotee former ringmember, heads over. I send a small but nonzero escort because they're right over there and we need most of our swords in case the trolls attack early. The rest of our dudes head out to hit the trolls when the Starshines show up. The Starshines agreed to join us against the trolls, whichever way they turned. This was good, because they turned the trolls toward us. Starshine warriors hit them from behind as we bore the brunt of the troll attack. We drove them off, but ten of our warriors were hurt. The Starshines saw as many of theirs hurt, too, but said that it was always worth fighting the enemies of the Sun. Only injuries and a clan mood boost. Endarei 12, Late Fire Season We're not in great shape for raiding and if all goes well we can get a Pela grain blessing (the second most popular blessing) up by Late Earth. First I implore the Fire spirit though, because that was the number two actual option. Lerei easily persuaded the Fire Spirit to help the clan for several years. Fires flared up in different colors as the spirit danced around the village. Endarei 12, Early Earth Season Harvest time! Sacrificing for Pela mysteries. 14-15 is generally my default for this sort of non-event thing. Then we get an event. Sirassa, a horse breeder of the Brilliant Hoof clan, visits to show off her steed Sky Riser. It has a ridge of bone at its shoulders, where wings would attack, if it had them. Horses used to be flying creatures called hippogriffs, before trolls attacked and mutilated their goddess. The former Hippogriff is now Gamari, your horse deity. Sirassa says she is trying to breed horses who can fly, by selecting animals that still retain elements of the original, wounded goddess. She asks to inspect your horses to see if any bear the mark of Hippogriff. - Ask how you might one day perform her ritual. - Give her any horses that have the traits she seeks. - Humor her, but don't trade her any horses. - Sell her any horses that interest her, at a shrewd premium. - Trolls beset Hippogriff, devouring her wings. Hyalor came to her when she was wounded, and led her to a people in need. She doesn't have a particular choice in mind. - Every Rider knows the story of how Hippogriff lost her fangs and claws and wings. No recommendation. - What about flying goats? Has anyone thought of that? No recommendation, but I think we're fine with that. - Humans do not have the magic to heal a goddess. But we can help a horse. Ask how you might one day perform her ritual. - We should learn the magic she's using to breed these horses. Ask how you might one day perform her ritual. - Chariots would pose no match for flying horses. Give her the horses. - Our answer will teach our people to either accept new things, or hew cautiously to established ways. No recommendation. The Brilliant Hoof are a non-neighbor Rider clan. They are known for avoiding conflict. They like us (as a result of the event where we made our very first deer infestation into a big multi-clan sporting occasion). We owe them a favor. Haifisch posted:Ask how we might perform this ritual. It's in Wealth, but it pops up in advice in other screens and also clan members give a headsup if we're low. it's something i should put in the OP on a turn-by-turn basis Also, if you look at the Wealth tab, it'll often tell you whether you have a food shortage (read: will eat more than you produce in a given year). We're currently in an event so I can't check for sure but I think we have a season's food before the Early Earth harvest update.

The food display is also kind of misleading because hunting, gathering, and herding give food year-round. So you can end the harvest season with less than a year's worth of food and still end up fine. Your advisers will complain if that happens though.

trade for a profit: There's a good chance this won't work at all, since the attack changed the fundamental soul of Horses and you can't breed that out. If it was that easy the 3rd age wouldn't have any trollkin. Plus if Horses stopped being Horses and became Hippogriffs or whatever, Hyalor's bonds of friendship may change with it. This gives us good money for losing a few horses, and if it does work somehow we get credit. If we're trying to return to the old world, we may as well go back under the ice sheet and embrace stasis. Still, it probably won't work so we may as well make some profit. Wrestlepig fucked around with this message at 00:40 on Jul 17, 2018 |

zonohedron posted:We owe them a favor. Would giving her the horses count as fulfilling that favor? (This is not a vote; nothing is bolded.) Absolutely not. Favors are big deals--clans never pass up on an opportunity to remind you that you owe them a favor, or that they're calling that favor in. There's usually a small feast. When your clan is important enough to have another clan have to fulfill your requests, that makes your clan important. Likewise, being wealthy enough to promise another clan whatever they need, and being able to follow through, makes your clan impressive. Then everyone tells everyone else how great they are, and then there's drinking. Giving and receiving favors is the behavior of kings, as long as you can afford it. If you can't, take some cows from someone who can.

A favor is worth 4-5 horses, so if they feel particularly fond of this lady and she gets that many for free they might consider it discharged. Those are several ifs though.
