The big news outside of the block matches we've all known about for a few weeks are Rey Mysterio getting booked for Budokan against a mystery opponent and a Omega/Young Bucks vs. Kota/Chase/Scurll multiman match the first night at Budokan to build to the big singles match the next night.

So, how come some of the matches are between wrestlers with 2 points, and others are wrestlers with 0 points, but then there's matches where a wrestler has 2 points going up against one with 0? How do they decide that? Shouldn't Makabe go up against EVIL and YOSHI-HASHI go up against Suzuki?

EVIL has 0 points which was recorded correctly in the spreadsheet but there was a typo in the original card listing that he copied. regardless, it's a round robin tournament where everyone faces everyone once and the schedule is announced in advance.

Explain like I'm 5 and an idiot.

you can see the schedule in the spreadsheet i posted. everyone wrestles everyone else in their block once for 9 matches in total. you get 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw. the winners of each block face each other in the finals. if two people are tied the result of the head to head match serves as a tiebreaker.

Is the planned match order random in kayfabe? They obviously plan them out to tell certain stories but does New Japan ever talk about how they decide the match order?

no it def isn't presented as random. big venues and tokyo will get bigger matches and the block ending nights get a huge main event (tanahashi vs. okada and omega vs. ibushi this year). if wrestling was a shoot it would be done the same way.

Has anyone swept the board before in the round robin version of the G1?

Also, YTR is gonna out-wrestle ZSJ on Thursday and it's gonna be beautiful. Zack and TAKA are gonna lose their fuckin' minds.

it's happened twice with riki choshu in 1996 and tenzan in 2006. those tournaments both had 5 man blocks so you're only talking four block matches as opposed to the current 9 though tenzan also had a semi-final to get through for 6 matches total. nakamura swept his 7 man block in 2009 before losing to makabe in the final.

it wasn't the G1, but devitt went 10-0 in the 2013 BOSJ aided by BC chicanery.

much needed two points for naito. im gonna be worried if he has trouble with toru yano.

this tournament is the first time i've listened to english commentary more than japanese and while i expected naito to win heading in kelly was loving scaring me as some of his comments would've been foreshadowing a goto "upset" in other promotions
