Hero of the soviet union.
Accidental destroyer of planets

World War Two. You may have heard about it. It was a big thing back then, they made a few films about it and wrote the odd book.
Oh yeah, and made the odd computer game of it.

John Tillar's Massive ego Campaign Series is an old game, but one I though might be interesting to LP. It allow you to run a randomised, dynamic campaign set in most places in WWII. You command a unit from company to divisional level, and take them through the limits of your chosen campaign. The game generates your maps and your foes, and you track losses and experience – do well, and you will be able replace those MKIII's with Panthers or Tigers. Do poorly and you will be holding out in Berlin with 38t's.

Now before you get excited, this is what the game looks like.

This is, obviously, the American Paratrooper landings around St Mere Eglies on June 6th. I did say this was an old game!

Here I’ve selected some of the German units, and we have our first data dump! I’m going to steal from the manual!

="John Tillar" posted:

Strength (Command) – The unit’s current Strength Point (SP) value. Each SP of an infantry-type platoon represents one “half squad.” Each SP of an machinegun, mortar, or gun type unit represents one “team” (if a machinegun) or gun (for “tube” weapons such as mortars or artillery). Each SP of a vehicular platoon represents one vehicle. A SP value shown in yellow indicates that the selected unit is not at full strength. If the unit is a Leader, this is his “Command,” which is added to the Attack Strength of a unit under his command, with which he is stacked, if that Leader possesses at least as many Action Points (AP) as the Fire Cost of the attacking unit.

Action – The number of Action Points (AP) the unit has remaining (unused). All units start each “friendly” turn with 100 APs; each action executed during a turn (and each terrain entered) will cost a given amount of AP. Note that, due to differing movement rates, different unit types will expend different amounts of AP for entering similar terrain. The AP expended to enter a hex are doubled if the unit is Disrupted (to a maximum of 65 AP; see section 5.3).

Assault – That unit’s basic attack value when it Assaults.
Defense – That unit’s basic defensive value when it is being fired on or assaulted. A unit’s Defense shown in red indicates that it is a “hard” (i.e., armored) target.

Fire Cost – How many AP that unit must expend to shoot.

Morale (Leadership) – The unit’s current Morale (the number it must roll equal to or less than on a 10-sided die when doing a Morale Check). In order for a unit to become Undisrupted or to regain a lost Morale level, it must also roll equal to or less than this number. A Morale level displayed in yellow indicates the unit is not currently at full (nominal) Morale; this can be as a result of combat, or the unit might have begun the scenario at a reduced Morale level. If the unit is a Leader, this number is instead his “Leadership Rating,” which modifies the Morale of the unit(s) under his command that he is stacked with.
If his Morale is greater than that unit’s, his Morale is used for it.
If his Morale equals or is less than that unit’s, its Morale is raised by one.
A unit’s Morale appears in red if it’s being modified by a Leader.
A unit’s Morale can be affected by the terrain it occupies. “Beneficial” terrain will raise a unit’s Morale so that it will be less likely to fail a Morale Check and thus less likely to retreat,

And the info beneath them is the hex info. It’s simple, except TEM is the amount of attack strength allows to attack the hex - so 1 us 100%, 0.5 is 50% The suburb shown here allows only 60% of the attack strength to be used.

So how I this going to work?

This will be a goons in command lp. You will each get a platoon or equivalent of troops, or be an officer. We will start at the battalion level, and you will all try to survive to the end of the campaign.

If you are killed, you are out of the game, unless there are no goons in the replacement pool. If the battalion Commander is killed, then the whole game ends!

Order from the upper escalons should leave room for the lower levels of command to have their own input. So-
Battalion command “1st company take that objective!”
Company Commander “1st platoon take the hill to the left, 2nd clear that village, 3rd take the objective.”

There are more details, but no micromanaging please - it takes the fun from the lower levels.

I’ll get more into things as we go, but we have an important choice to make - what campaign do we want to play?

Here is the small list of dynamic campaigns available - all can be played on both sides.
