This is Pitana's 5th game at this world cup, which I believe is tied with Irmatov for most games in a single world cup. It also is his 9th total, which brings him second all time. He also did the opening game. The last referee to do the opener and closer was his compatriot Elizondo in 2006. Pitana saw Croatia in their match against Denmark in the R16 and France in their match against Uruguay in the quarterfinals, so he has seen them both somewhat recently. He has been solid this world cup, so while I'm surprised at the appointment, he earned this match. I think he is one of the few guys who has managed to do very well even with FIFAs "Don't you dare card anybody"-esque instructions. Hopefully he is able to stay on top of it today. Kuipers is on 4th Official duty again, having done one of the semi finals. One of his ARs is the reserve AR here on the final, the other was the reserve on the semi final. I know the Reserve AR literally does nothing, but I would have hated to lose that coin flip. From the VAR seats, Irrati and Makkelie were the two most used head VARs in the tournament so I'm not surprised the see them both here. Astroza was AVAR2 twice as often as the next closest guy in the tournament, and Vigliano was the 4th most used head VAR and is also from Argentina so I'm not surprised he beat out Zwayer (who was 3rd) for AVAR1.
