The Unending Pursuit lurches as it exits warp travel, the Eye of Terror looming in the distance before it and the planet of Cadia in its peripheral; warp travel is dangerous this close to the entrance to the warp itself, and the navigator of the vessel brings it as close to their prize as they can. Sitting some distance between Cadia and the entrance to the Eye of Terror itself, limping through realspace, is The Warmaster’s Son, an ancient vessel that at one point in the history of man may have been the turning point of the race’s greatest battle, had it simply arrived. But that had been ten millennia ago, and the galaxy had burned since then. The Warmaster’s Son is currently drifting slowly towards Cadia, and the vessel still fights on; lance batteries and missile batteries fire upon decrepit Chaos ships that are attempting to pull up on its broadside, holding them at bay. Standing aboard the bridge are the six Blood Ravens chosen by their chapter to ply the depths of the vessel and discover what they can of its true origins and, should it be the ship of legends, recover it for the honor of the Chapter Master. With them are the owner of The Unending Pursuit, a rogue trader of a lineage dating back to the loss of The Warmaster’s Son, and his bodyguard, a man who shrouds his past as best as he can. As they approach the ancient Emperor-class ship, the communications officer flags down Thurgood. ”Sir, our cogitators are processing some sort of repeating message; we can’t make heads or tails of it, and your spymaster believes it may be encrypted. Even if so, sir, it’s no code we know.” He leans slightly to glance towards the marines, before looking the trader in the eye again. ”Do you, ah, have any notion of what we should do, sir? There’s concerns the ship may fire on us as well.” And the game is afoot! Please post your character sheets with your first post, and know that you've been in warp transit for approximately three days now. The Warmaster's Son is broadcasting a signal that The Unending Pursuit doesn't recognize, and it seems to be firing on any ship that gets too close, especially the more tainted looking ones. Feel free to make any skill checks you like on Orokos, and if you haven't made your basic acquisitions according to the BC rules yet, go ahead and do so now. You'll get a chance for more special poo poo later. Also, still no trade ins.

Sergeant Matias Solomon, 10th Company "Probably would be best to try to break the code before we do anything else. Brother-Captain Orlov, can you manage it? If that fails, then we'd have to figure out a way to get on board without being killed. Lord Captain Vespasian Osgrim Thurgood-Redcliffe XIV The Lord Captain shifts in his command throne, mustache twitching in mild irritation. "I see a few of those Chaos madmen have gone and kicked the proverbial Hive Ship. Firing upon the vessel is obviously out of the question, even if we weren't outgunned and outsized. I suppose we could risk probing the defenses with my ship. Perhaps it won't fire on us if we broadcast our loyalty, or perhaps we can find a blindspot in its coverage. Or... we could just drat the torpedoes and ram them side-on. Might break something in the process." Brother Catchibald, Chapter Librarian Catchibald looks lost in thought a moment as he gazes on the ongoing space battle which, frankly, contained some of the most immense pieces of bizarre futuristic technology that he'd ever seen. Even just a near miss from one of The Warmaster's Son's cannons would be enough to reduce the lot of them to nothing but a smear on the nearest stellar body. Still, it was supposed to be on their side, right? All they had to do was say the right things to differentiate themselves from the attacking Chaos boats! Now, normally, Catchibald would have no goddamn idea what that would be. Of course, thanks to the wonders of unchecked psionic strength, he merely brute forces reality until he sees the future in which they transmit the correct phrase. He says, "Ey, you lot, transmit something like 'The Emperor Protects' using Orlov's fiddly code bits. Trust me on this, it works!" Xaiphos the Erudite "Code?" Xaiphos had been staring out at the battle, occasionally muttering about how "majestic" The Warmaster's Son was in its annihilation of the swarming Chaos fleet, but the mention of an encrypted message piqued his interest. "Well, let's see what we can do about that." The marine leaned his massive bulk over the Rogue Trader's communications officer, completely boxing them in to the panel without any avenue for escape. "Oh yes, very clever..." he ventured, apparently amused by the rapidly repeating garble or waves and sounds. "Just let me borrow this," he said absently as he plucked away the officer's dataslate and immediately began to punch away at the screen--the entire apparatus comically undersized in his gauntleted fist. "There." After just a few minutes he handed back the dataslate complete with an elegant line of machine language. "That should decipher it. Such an old ship would communicate using Martian cryptography and a handshake protocol from ancient Terra. It's really quite simple when you think about it." Aster the Blue Wake Aster looks out the window of the bridge out towards the fight in space. The Warmaster's Son was a damned sight to behold. The one ship was holding its own against a bunch of marauders. gently caress what was in the ship. If the ship itself could be salvaged, the Blood Ravens chapter would have undeniable power. Plus they could probably abandon their thrice cursed recruiting worlds and just go full fleet based with a ship like that. Aster had been practicing his roaring speech to give to the squad upon their boarding, but that'd have to be stowed for when they got past all the guns trying to fry them. At the mention of a code, Aster glances down at a screen for half a second and start to look at it until Xaiphos and Orlov start nerding out over it and shouting notes across the bridge. Thank gently caress they have that handled. Aster thinks to himself. He then turns back to the tactical situation. "So, even if we do make sure the Warmaster's Son doesn't fire upon us, we can't keep this ship parked by the side while a Chaos fleet harasses us can we? We'll likely have to use some sort of attack craft or boarding torpedo while this ship stays far away and out of the fight. Standard establish a bridgehead scenario." Francisco de Borja As the ship blinks back into realspace, Francisco relaxes his grip slightly on the strap holding the ancient sonic cannon slung over his shoulder. There's very little that can genuinely frighten him, but his first experience of Warp travel - the strange, almost electrical feeling in the air, and the suspicious glances the crew direct at each other - has left him ill at ease. Then the sight of the Warmaster's Son fighting its pursuers fills the viewscreen, and Francisco can do nothing but stare up at it in mute awe. This is what he came here for; not a decayed relic, or fragments of a long-dead era, but a living, breathing piece of the past. His reverie is broken, though, by the scout marine to his left discussing their plan of approach. "My armour has intact seals and life support, but my boots can't be magnetized. Sargeant Thyrakos, 1st Company Without a moment's pause, Thyrakos replies. "Threat surface, and equipment choice. Consider the conditions of voidborne assault -- immense freedom of movement with the right tools, impairment without them, and there's always an open flank. If we were loaded with fast attack gear, then perhaps, but we aren't. Captain Orlov and I are best suited for close engagement against enemies with restricted flanking opportunities. We're the point men for this mission, and we will excel in the same situations lighter troops would suffer in." Hefting his heavy weapon, he adds, "Besides, this works best against dug in foes, who are counting on their cover to provide a tactical advantage. I expect we'll encounter a considerable number of improvised fighting positions onboard. The enemy will breach to oppose us, and their numbers will surely give them enough entry points to have time to prepare."

Aster the Blue Wake Aster raises his eyebrow under his death mask before hefting his Crozius. "Best suited for close engagement my red armored rear end. No self respecting Chaplain would be anywhere but the front line." The closer things came to combat, the more excited Aster became, and his pissy attitude lightens. "Like you said though, the Enemy will be boarding after us. Which brings me to my original point. Even of Orlov and company can get the Warmaster's Son to not shoot at us, our ship here won't be able to stay closely docked. So either we board in a strike craft, or if we board another way, we might be without support." Aster checks his plasma pistol again. "That means all of you relying on ranged weapons, pick your shots well, we might not be able to rely on steady resupply. On the other hand, might find an armory full of Heresy era weapons. Can never tell."

Xaiphos the Erudite It seemed that the subject had turned to tactics, and that his Brothers were immediately thinking with their bolters and not their brains. "I don't believe that we'll have any success if we don't have an established CQ to support us. If we are forced to breach in a strike craft then perhaps The Unending Pursuit can relay basic scans to us from afar, but we will be much more likely to succeed if we make contact with the friendly forces still inside." Xaiphos indicated the rows of macrobatteries and laser lances turning back the Ruinous Powers' fleet. "They will be able to relay detailed information to us more expediently. Also, given how many of the weapon systems are active, I believe that Imperial forces are still in control of a majority of the ship. Should my decryption work, they may be able to direct us to a landing bay and give us covering fire." "Sergeant Thyrakos is also correct though. The Enemy will eventually breach The Warmaster's Son, and when they do we will not have the numerical superiority to prevent them. However, that is not to say that we cannot oppose them." The Antiquarian, in addition to his collection of relics, also maintained a personal compliment of high explosives. "We can cover our progress from flanking assault by welding shut ports we pass and reinforcing them with explosive traps."

Lord Captain Vespasian Osgrim Thurgood-Redcliffe XIV The Rogue Trader slumps in his throne and mumbles "How very edifying" in a tone that suggests he neither understood a word that was just said nor cares to. He speaks up again only after a servitor refills his amasec glass. "If, as we hope, this repeating message gives us a clue to a means of approaching without being fired upon, then we have little to worry about from those Chaos raiders in the short term. That vessel vastly overpowers them. As long as we do nothing to outright deactivate its weapons, I suspect it can hold them off for a quite a while longer."

Francisco de Borja "What worries me is whether we'll be able to make the Warmaster's Son believe in our good intentions. Decoding their signal is a good start, but given their circumstances, they've got every reason to think that we might be a trick of the Enemy. Considering when this vessel was first lost, the fact that this mission is being led by Astartes won't necessarily convince them otherwise."

Xaiphos, even for his millennia of expertise and knowledge, does not immediately grasp the complexities of the encryption in the transmission before him. Certainly, there were similarities to other ancient Martian and Terran codes, and even to those of the highest security used within the Astartes chapters, but this a grox of another color. Orlov, as well, could see bits and pieces from his Mechanicus knowledge, but it was Catchibald who brought it all together; the librarian's glimpses into a future showing how the antiquarian and the tech-marine are able to solve the signal, one where they glean the fact they weren't even receiving the entirety of the signal due to minute variances in frequencies that were standard in ancient times but less so in more civilized times. In response to this, the librarian excuses himself, reaching between the two to re-enact a very important part of his future memory; Catchibald flicks the frequency override switch and gives a dial a very minute twist to the left, reducing the frequency by a scant 13 MHz. The transmission abruptly seems to change in its entirety somehow, and both the antiquarian and the armory master realize the missing piece of the puzzle: the transmission is certainly in a pre-heresy cipher, but was neither Martian, Terran, Astartes, or even Mechanicus in origin, which the known history of the vessel would have suggested. The signal, in fact, was encrypted with a Ganymedean code, one that nowadays was used primarily within the Administratum to transmit requisition orders throughout their depots, one notorious for causing the loss and corruption of requisitions throughout the guard. "ALL STATIONS, ALL STATIONS, ALL STATIONS, PAN-PAN, PAN-PAN, PAN-PAN." Orlov recognizes the ancient distress signal easily enough for what it is; while the vessel before them is in danger, they do not feel it is urgent or in immediate need of rescue. Given the massiveness of The Warmaster's Son and its armament, this isn't difficult to agree with; even as the now decrypted message repeats itself, several banks of weaponry on the ship glow into life before unleashing a hellish staccato of plasma shots which punches apart what appears to be an ork rok. Now knowing their preferred method of encryption, the Ravens are in a position to reply and establish communications with the ship. One of the bosuns raises an alarm, however, as the machine spirit within the vessel catches on to the fact that The Warmaster's Son is attempting to obtain a targeting lock of some sort on the Raven vessel.

Lord Captain Vespasian Osgrim Thurgood-Redcliffe XIV "Oh, of course they're going to make me work for it. Fine, fine." The Lord Captain flicks a switch and his throne rises up to the level of the command hololith, where he immediately begins gesturing and tapping icons with the ease of a practiced professional. "Evasive maneuvers! Don't let them have that lock without a fight! My good marines, if you could work on a suitably kind message for our hosts, I would be most appreciative. Aster the Blue Wake Once the three most Blooded of Ravens figure out the cypher he looks at the translated message. "What in Force Commander Gel's glorious locks does 'pan-pan' even mean? Tell their drat ship to shut the hell up and say something useful." As soon as the alarm begins to be raised for an attempted lock, he looked to their host Redcliffe. While the Rogue Trader seems to be doing a good job at handling the Con, his men and women seem to be running around. Typical, the Rogue Trader can't control his own crew. Aster grabs one of the running ratings and hefts her into the air with one arm while he begins to shout above the din. "You have with you the Angels of Death! We are blessed warriors of the Imperium. The Emperor will let no harm come to this ship while we grace its presence, so all of you take heart in that fact and focus on the task at hand. While the Emperor will protect, he will only save those who act on his grace and not squander it. So do whatever needs to be done to shake that lock! Because if this ship gets destroyed, I swear on my chapter I will have more than enough time to kill the lot of you in the miliseconds between this final shot hitting and explosive decompression!" Asther lets go of the rating, letting her fall to her feet. He could have thrown her, but he actually didn't know how important she, or the console he was eyeing to throw her at, were to the current problem. Just for clarification's sake, PAN-PAN is the signal that is a step below SOS/Mayday; it means a vessel is in an urgent situation but it doesn't pose an immediate threat to the crew or the vessel itself. SOS/Mayday asks other ships to drop everything to intervene, while PAN-PAN is basically saying 'yo poo poo's hosed but we're okay right now.' I'd imagine most 'modern' Imperial vessels just go into full 'gently caress SEND EVERYTHING TO HELP US' mode the second they even suspect there's a problem.

Francisco de Borja Francisco takes a dataslate lying on one of the bridge's consoles, and types a short message into it. Wordlessly, he passes it up to his employer, Vespasian Thurgood-Redcliffe, to look over. It reads: "This is the Imperial ship Unending Pursuit, possession of the warranted trading house of Thurgood-Redcliffe. We are currently transporting a complement of six loyalist Astartes, who have been dispatched to arrange a lost vessel's return to the Imperial command structure. We request that you confirm the name and origin of your vessel, and that you give permission for a small shuttle containing our Astartes and associated dignitaries to dock with your ship."

Lord Captain Vespasian Osgrim Thurgood-Redcliffe XIV The Rogue Trader skims the slate for a half a second and then hands it back down with a dismissive gesture, inadvertently sending a dozen holographic icons flying away across his display. His face reddens but he resists the urge to yell something unfit for noble tongues. "It seems lovely, Francis, but I'm a little distracted trying to foul the aim of an Astartes targeting cogitator that probably dates back to the Dark Age and I fear it may think slightly faster than I do, so time is of the essence. Show it to the Astartes and send it immediately if they have no objections or additions."

Xaiphos the Erudite "Oh well that hardly seems necessary," Xaiphos commented flatly at the bosun's alarm. This was all a terrible misunderstanding and The Warmaster's Son was, frankly, overreacting. He didn't expect that once the warship had them locked they would be convinced to stop firing though. The marine politely shoved aside one of the ratings at the communications array and set himself to work. The Unending Pursuit was a venerable ship as well, and it's machine spirit had a fierce cunning. It could not overpower the vastly superior battleship, but it could harry the sensors with chaotic bursts of garbage code. Xaiphos enacted a hunting pattern for the machine spirit to follow, using the thousands of antenna and transmitters throughout the ship to barrage the sensors pointing at them into a compete snow crash. Brother Catchibald, Chapter Librarian Catchibald looks it over, for a moment, then quickly taps in an addendum reading, "For the Emperor!" The Librarian then gives Francisco what may well be the least reassuring thumbs-up in the dark, war-torn future before handing it back. He says, "That should do the trick!"

Orlov and Xaiphos together are able to manipulate various subsystems on the vessel to produce bursts of noise that throw the targeting attempts off by several degrees each time the old ship tries to make a lock, but both know, even with their combined efforts, that a vessel as venerable as The Warmaster's Son will be able to compensate for the noise before too long. Thurgood, meanwhile, preps the cruiser to begin evasive maneuvers. During all this, Francisco has put together a broadcast that, hopefully, will convince the ship they are no threat. With Catchibald's approval, Francisco hands the dataslate over to the communications officer, who initially attempts to send the message via psychic relay; however, this doesn't work with a ship the Son's age, and he is assisted by Xaiphos and Orlov once again in sending the transmission vocally over the Son's preferred channel. There is a moment of tension as, after all of the two marines' attempts and the maneuvering of Thurgood, where the Son has the Pursuit in a full target lock. Thurgood and the marines brace for impact, but after a moment, there seems to be no incoming fire. After another moment of silence, a strangled voice comes across the intercom, affected heavily by differences in technology and distance; the voice squalls and changes in pitch at random as the Ganymedean encryption gives it hell. "This is Admiral Vance Stubbs, commander of The Warmaster's Son. Your transmission has been received, but I'm afraid I don't understand what your mission is. I'm aware of the Redcliffe name amongst the warrants of trade, but not the Thurgood-Redcliffes. As you may be aware, we are currently engaged with enemy vessels, but I will allow boarding at your own risk. Stubbs, out." Moments later, the ship's cogitator alerts that the target lock has been broken, and The Warmaster's Son begins to open fire anew on the vessels flanking it.

Aster the Blue Wake When the vox reply comes in from the Warmaster's Son Aster smiles, excited at the prospect of boarding. However, it is hidden by the grave features of his death mask. "Okay, doesn't recognize our mission, recognizes the name from the warrant of trade, I'd bet a relic bolter that this ship still thinks it is the grand age of the Crusade. But uh, betting relic bolters is heresy, so let's not actually do that." Sensing now was his time to give his dumb prep talk, Aster ascends to the highest point in the bridge, which happens to be right in front of Radcliffe's command throne. "Okay Blood Ravens, knowledge is power! Today we board a ship that is a relic of the Age of the Great Crusade! A time when tanks could melt entire buildings, where dreadnaughts weren't boxy, and where Volkite weapons were as common as lasguns! We go today to see what long lost secrets of mankind she holds. For now it sounds as though the ship is not hostile, but be on your guard, we do not yet know the loyalties of those on this ship; it is called The Warmaster's Son, and we all know how the Warmaster ended up. Thyrakos and myself shall take the lead, now down to the Thunderhawk, or other means of conveyance!" Aster almost threw up in his helmet delivering that speech. Something in the old marine's demeanor had him hoping that those on the ship would be hostile. Werix fucked around with this message at 13:22 on Aug 10, 2018 |

Lord Captain Vespasian Osgrim Thurgood-Redcliffe XIV When the lock breaks, the Lord Captain's victory cry resounds across the bridge: "Smashing!" His throne descends from the command level with a sigh of pneumatics. He jumps to his feet and claps his hands together once, eyes glittering with excitement. "Well done, all! It's not every day you face down a vessel of this provenance and live to tell the tale! Really gets the blood pumping. Lieutenant Vickers, you have the bridge. Brother Catchibald, Chapter Librarian Aha, a call to action! And, implicitly, a race to the dropship! Catchibald focuses his prodigious psychic abilities on turning into a ghost, as one does, and begins to slip down through the labyrinthine corridors of the ship towards the hanger. Xaiphos the Erudite Well then, time to get to work. There were relics to protect and a ship to recover. Honestly Xaiphos had not expected there to be survivors, but, Praise the Emperor, there were and they appeared to be loyal. For now. Xaiphos walked with a little pep in his step down to the armory to retrieve his full mission loadout and his liberating sack, which he used for liberating relics. "Are we ready then?" he asked rhetorically as he stepped onto the Thunderhawk. "No time to waste. There's a war out there, you know."

As the mission is about to start, you may start requisitioning items. Due to Redcliffe's wealth, you will be able to acquire any weapons, armor, or equipment up to rare without a roll; Rare and Very Rare will require a roll but will be at -10 and -30. Unique and Near Unique equipment is not available, and drugs and personnel will require the usual rolls. I'd say this should all be within reason but considering the Rogue Trader in question I fully expect everyone to have a crate of hellguns so you can fire one until it's empty, discard it, and grab another.
