Would somebody be so kind as to recommend a book on software architecture? I know of http://aosabook.org and I'm not sure if Design Patterns is what I'm looking for. I was hoping that learning the code at work would be a good way to go about it, but it's essentially: "keep the business layer and data layer separate, use the existing reference libs the architect wrote, and if you need to make new functionality add another static class under the Utils solution" To me, that gives me an off feeling. But then again all the heavy work is done by the mainframe and we're mostly just filtering the data to work with the web site...

tps: i spent the workday fixing a batch job, and in doing so accidentally marked one record to be sent to the wrong place in the federal government's system (I don't work for the feds, just communicate with them). I told the business analyst and he said he'd take care of it, so I hope that company trying to deny benefits to their employee gets to see our legal determination.

I like to think he bought an entire SS uniform so he could do war reenactment, and absolutely nothing else. After two or three emails to the proprietor, I stopped getting the confirmations.

Have you ever sent one person's dong as a reply to another's? Set up a whitelist and anything that isn't on it gets one of the random dong mails back.

I like to write documentation because I'm going to be the one who maintains what I put in, and I would really enjoy knowing why the hell it's written like that come 24 hours later.

tps: So terrible I've gone two weeks without programming. Work has given me research tasks into seeing how some mainframe jobs communicate with the .NET stuff. The answer? XML.VikingofRock posted:Just accepted my first programming job outside of academia! I'm really excited, and seriously a huge part of getting to this point was hanging around this thread and reading all of your thoughts and getting my questions answered in a friendly and helpful way. Just wanted to pop in and say thanks to everyone here. You all are great 🍻 Knock 'em dead.
