we had a phd implement some specialized compression for some system and every variable was i, j, k, i1, i2, i3, i4, x1, x2, x3, x4, y1, y2, y3, y4, zx1, zx2, zx3 etc. there was like 40 variables. they were all declared at the top of the function, and reused it different stages throughout the routine. took forever to refactor it into something sane.
