Norwegian fans got Alita requested back in IMAX for one day this Saturday in Oslo. Some Germans and Americans are working on a similar feat. I'm getting tickets this time, since I missed it when it first came out - I expected it to be Ghost in the Shell level bad.

Darth TNT posted:I think it's pretty funny how much this Forbes guy loved Alita. Dark Phoenix' director Kinberg said that they would need to rush to get ready for February anyway, and took all the blame on himself. That doesn't make the story of asking for a February release untrue, but it's not as cut and dried as the "Dark Phoenix was sacrificed for Alita" narrative. Now the "Dark Phoenix was sacrificed for Captain Marvel" story has taken over for it: 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix' ending completely reshot due to 'parallels' with another superhero movie Not sure if they're just trying to be funny. In any case, I respect Kinberg for not trying to pass the buck.

I like to see the influx of people who have recently watched it on digital, in-flight and hotel VOD services, because it's concurrent with articles and tweets from journalists and "influencers" admitting that Alita wasn't as bad as they said it was. Even that article in The Independent says that it got worse reviews than it deserved, and ends with a statement (admittedly buried on the bottom) saying that most fans like it for legitimate reasons. And then there's stuff like this thread: https://twitter.com/thelindsayellis/status/1146477076700000261

I didn't read the manga but I thought the movie made a lot of sense internally. It's not like I need to know anything from the manga to explain the plot. The only thing I reacted to - beside the end being a bit abrupt - was that there appears to be "hidden" time skip between Alita joining Motorball and her first try-out. They might have done that to keep the dramatic tension going, because Zapan scheeming against her can move straight into the try-out scene. But Hugo doesn't actually do any coaching as it is now. An alternative way to do this might have been to actually approach it like a sports movie - like Cool Runnings - and had actual training scenes that would explain the rules and stuff like that. Cut the "handpicked scum scene". And then spring the "surprise" on both Alita and the audience. teagone posted:It's this. The film makes it explicitly clear that the reward for becoming final champion is being sent to Zalem. It's Roman Gladiator-esque—win the crowd, win your freedom type deal. I think movie Nova finds Alita entertaining. He lets her live because he likes the challenge and finds her interesting. That's what shines through in the movie. I think that works. Haven't gotten to Nova in the manga yet.

Apropos SDCC and Blade, Marsheshala Ali has been cast as the new Blade. People in the UK and US are already receiving their Blu-ray pre-orders. I'd love to go to an outdoor screening sometime, like this one in Croatia: https://twitter.com/cor_solitarius/status/1153053399061078016 Edit: While the Blu-ray is in 2.39:1 (wide), it appears that some of the digital services have the movie in "open matte" or IMAX formats. So far, the services who I've heard have the movie in "open matte" (1.78:1) are Xfinity (via the Movies Anywhere app in the US) and chili.com with Chromecast (in Europe). So this doesn't work when you transfer your purchases from a different streaming service. But will it work with the Movies Anywhere codes in the US Blu-ray, or only when you purchase it directly in the app?

The BOL.com (Dutch online store) listing claims that their Alita 4K Blu-ray is 16:9 and requires a 3840 x 2160 screen. I kind of doubt that us Europeans get an open matte Blu-ray when the US didn't, though.

Best Buy's steelbook seemed to get sold out pretty quickly, and at least one city apparently didn't even get any steelbooks at all. Alita is currently on the Amazon.com best selling list as number 1 (4K/3D/Blu-ray) and number 2 (Blu-ray/DVD), but that's not really surprising for a release day. I'll be interested to see if the regular Blu-rays and DVDs get pillaged off the physical store shelves too,.

Yes, it looks like they held back part of their stock in each store for the day of release. What might also happen is if somebody pre-ordered and failed to pick it up, it can become available later in the week.

Best Buy's website lists the Steelbooks as available again, with shipping option. Does it say anywhere how "limited" this edition really is? A store in the Czech Republic had 601 copies of an edition with a lenticular 3D cover/print that I haven't seen anywhere else. But I'm not sure anyone else lists exactly the number of copies that they made. If Best Buy's is limited as in "time limited" or "store exclusive" that'll be less valuable for collectors, I suppose. It used to be something to motivate people to get the DVD of a TV show or movie they'd already seen. Sometimes the actors/directors wouldn't even be paid to make the commentary - due to outdated contracts - but did it anyway to support the work and motivate sales. It seems like with all the podcasts and other online media we have these days, film makers and actors have more outlets for in-depth discussion of movies where they also can get paid more than they would for a commentary track. We might also speculate that they cut the commentary track because of scheduling, combined with the movie being projected to make a massive loss - meaning that spending resources on a commentary track would be like throwing good money after bad.

I think the Australian steelbook also comes with four discs. It says it has "2.5 hours" of extras on the box, versus 2 hours in the US. Lootcrates remind me of those people who buy boxes of toys from Amazon returns or toy store bankruptcies and sell the contents on eBay. Buying a box of stuff which you will mostly sell or give away seemed a bit pointless to me, so I never got into it. Especially if you had to subscribe and couldn't buy individual crates.

I think it's less creepy than a movie star who was asking people to donate money for tickets to her movie, since these are fans doing this on their own with their own money. Also they're not stalking people or anything like that ( ReyLo). But if they go much farther on this, they'll be founding Alitanetics Wellness Centers and answering "Panzer Kunst" as their census religion.

The Dutch one is sold out, but the German 4-disc steelbook, which looks the exactly the same - except for the paper that you remove - can still be ordered from resellers at Amazon Germany. These two sellers apparently ship to the US. I also saw a claim that it'll be back in stock from Amazon proper on August 27th, but wouldn't rely on that. Some brick-and-mortar stores in Germany were well stocked with these steelbooks. My German steelbook is currently lost in the mail. If I end up with two steelbooks, I could send one to you at cost. Be aware that the shipping from Norway would be more than $17, because it trips a doubling of the postage. (Unless you want it shipped in a thin envelope.) Edit: It'll cost over $100 due to import fees, VAT and double shipping, so I'd recommend a German or Dutch re-seller instead. In garbage tier entertainment news, an artist who didn't watch Alita made an animation of Alita punching Captain Marvel - just for fun - and posted it on Twitter. This kicked off another round of news articles and tweets calling Alita fans alt-right misogynists, or gatekeepers against fun, depending on who the writer wanted rage clicks from. Would be nice if that sort of discussion would be confined to Tumblr instead of popping up in my Google News feed. Vir fucked around with this message at 22:31 on Aug 13, 2019 |

In the only remaining specialist music and movie store in my city, they rank the Alita Blu-ray as 2nd in their "Top 10" list after Shazam!. The Nordic online retailer CDON.com lists Alita as number 4 behind Hobbes&Shaw pre-sales, and Aquaman and Bumblebee which are both 56% off this week in Norway. They have Alita as number 3 in Sweden.

I was fine with the original manga ending, but I'm not complaining that we got Last Order and Mars Chronicle too. There's some echoes of Norse mythology and a nice wrapping up of the Jashugan and Figure arcs, even though it's a bit rushed and treats Nova a bit too well.LORD OF BOOTY posted:the absolute loving heart attack the #AlitaChallenge morons would have at his whole "being a trans dude and that being treated as completely NBD" deal would be beyond hilarious. For some reason, the Change.org petition for an Alita sequel is getting more than a thousand signatures per hour. Last time the petition got such a boost, it was because the news coverage about the Game of Thrones petition led to an influx of people who also signed the Alita petition. Change.org themselves wrote an article about the Alita petition a couple of weeks ago, which led to some "news" coverage on sites like CinemaBlend and a few more signatures - but I haven't seen anything which would explain this latest jump. Did some TV show in China or Russia cover it or something?

There's also that Prime1 statue at $699 or $999 and the 1:1 bust at $2750. I mean, there must be a market for this kind of stuff, but I wonder how many people can afford and have room for a 1:1 movie accurate Thanos or Baby Yoda in their living room. Meanwhile, affordable toys go on clearance. Andy Serkis has a Gollum model in his house, and that makes sense, but production runs on these must be rather low, right?
