I haven't played too much but my inclination is to not recruit a 7th character until somebody died, but I'm expecting that to bite me sooner or later. Wave battles are in Survival mode too, so it's a good idea to get a couple of extras to swap in! It also looks to me like there's a bug allowing you to promote anyone regardless of how many kills they have, which would be a bigger deal if they didn't mostly start with max stats already.
