Seriously. Watching rugby is so refreshing compared to the NFL just because the rules are about a billion times more straightforward. I still watch football but the rulebook seems to get more capricious and inscrutable to the average viewer every year.

The other thing is rugby style tackles are also much more consistent at bringing the ball carrier down. The thing is players want to make this highlight real hit or cause a fumble, and while those are cool and all, for every one of those hits, you have 10 where the tackler straight up fails to make an impact and next thing you know the carrier is 10 yards downfield.

Massive hits get you a reputation as a hard nosed tackler which in turns gets you more money on your next contract

never, like, count out Touchdown Tom, man
Rugby tackles aren't the end-all be-all of this for a couple reasons:

1. Rugby tackles are the way they are because rugby is a game of possession, not of yardage. This is true more for union than league but the places that lead to harder hits in league lead to harder hits in union too. Because it's a game of possession, the goal of a rugby tackle is to stop the person with the ball and ideally swing them to the ground behind you, so your team can get the ball. It's like those annoying NFL tackles where a guy is going for a strip rather than a tackle and the runner gets an extra five yards all the time - but that's fine in rugby because to a first approximation those five yards don't matter. This isn't true in the NFL without changing the rules.

2. When inches actually do matter, like on the goal line, you can see some nasty poo poo

3. It all stems anyway from not having helmets

Nothing will change as long as players have helmets and inches matter. That's just how the sport works.

Yeah I was gonna mention that switching to rugby tackling would give the ball carrier a free yard or two (or more) on every single carry. You don't win doing that under the current rules

So was this year's Hall of Fame game better or worse than just having the whole thing cancelled like last year?

While interesting, this is a good example of someone picking an arbitrary point and then extrapolating things out of it and thinking that means something (it doesn't).

I guarantee if you had set the line at say 50 points or 40 this analysis would all fall apart.

A much, much better thing to have done would've been to put points scored into a regression against number of wins (have playoff wins count as double or something). Then you'd know you aren't just picking lucky break points.

Good idea, bad execution 2/5.

Interceptions don't matter in training camp or the preseason because that's when you should be finding out what you can get away with with your receivers.

Preseason is just really weird because the stuff that gets reported on them is just irrelevant. What matters is who's working with the #1's, what backups are being played out of position / asked to do what they haven't shown they can before (ie, pass rush specialists in coverage etc), or special teams, because the team is trying to figure out what their injury plans are and what they might need to shore up.

Like, a LB who completely shits the bed in coverage all over the place in a preseason game might be more likely to make the team then one that looks servicable, if that first guy is a solid pass rusher or run stuffer, because they needed to know if he could hack it in coverage if need be.

Also I don't think any player's ever won a job on their team in the 2nd half of the 4th preseason game. that seems to be where every guy getting cut ends up along with a few backups being forced to play out the death march.

If you told me five years ago that he would still be the second safety going into 2018 I would not believe it. He's good for about two interceptions a year by virtue of accidentally being in the right place at the right time, but he (attempts) tackles like his arms don't even function and it's infuriating how often he just bounces off of the ball carrier.

the rule is dumb as poo poo and so is Sandejo. they aren’t incompatible thoughts, especially cause his style of play makes him a liability on the field. he makes good plays occasionally but not enough to justify the way he throws himself around.

Rodgers is absolutely testing his receivers, and his picks are no reason to worry at all. It was also reported that he threw like a 26 yard no look pass TD in the two minute drill. I really hope that's a new move in his skill set. Has that ever even been a thing in the NFL?

edit:

I listened to a podcast with that guy last summer and he had horrible opinions and rankings.

edit 2 lordy it's an epidemic

quote:

1. We’re only seven practices into training camp and Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott continues to struggle. Thursday’s practice featured another day of inconsistent play from Prescott. He displays a strong arm, smarts and the ability to move well in the pocket. He’s just not making the necessary plays.

Prescott has unofficially thrown three interceptions and just one touchdown in the team periods. His touch on some throws is way off and he continues to dump passes down to running back Zeke Elliott and any tight end within five-to-seven yards near him. Prescott has completed a few deep passes, like a pretty throw he made to Tavon Austin, but there are times you wonder why he doesn’t make the simple play.
