PRO DOTA 2: THE INTERNATIONAL 2018 EDITION

What is Dota 2?
Dota 2 is a popular free-to-play action RTS developed by Valve Software based on a custom map for Warcraft III. It features 5v5 competitive multiplayer with each player controlling a different hero chosen from a roster of 113, each with four or more unique abilities that allow them to move around the map, damage or disable opponents, or accomplish any other number of weird and wacky maneuvers. The ultimate objective of the game is to destroy a number of the opposing team’s defensive structures and, ultimately, the opposing Ancient. To accomplish this, teams acquire gold and levels for their heroes from various sources around the map, use that gold to purchase items to enhance their power, and clash with the other team to secure a greater advantage for their own side that they can hopefully convert into victory.

What is Pro Dota 2?
Dota has a robust esports scene, with events running year-round and ranging from small online-only tournaments to huge invitational LANs with impressive prize pools. Valve involves itself with the pro scene by enforcing rules around team rosters and player mobility, as well as hosting several mega-large tournaments throughout the year - the Majors, held in various locations worldwide, and the International, which takes place in Seattle. This year TI is heading to Canada and will be held in Vancouver.

Pro teams are structured around each player taking a role that very broadly denotes what kind of play is expected from them, with one player serving as captain (often, but not always, the one responsible for drafting the team’s heroes). These roles are carry, midlaner, offlaner, farming support, and hard support. Teams generally consist of players from the same geographic region (for Dota, these are the Americas, China, Europe, the CIS, and Southeast Asia) and are divisionally organized using those regions as well. New to this year, is the addition of team coaches being able to be with the team during the initial Draft Phase.

What is The International 2018?
Once a year since 2011, Valve has hosted The International, the biggest tournament in the Dota scene by far. The International 2018 (TI8) main event will be held from August 20 - 25 2018 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada and will feature the eighteen best teams in the world. This year was the beginning of the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) and gave teams a tangible goal and way to see if they would be invited to TI by winning points at any Valve Major/Minor tournament. The teams placing in the top four spots of each tournament across the DPC this year would earn points and the Top 8 teams of the DPC would receive an invite to TI. The event will be preceded by a group stage from August 15 - 18, where two teams will be eliminated before making it to the main stage. At the end of it all, the top team will walk away with the lion’s share of nearly $22,890,590 USD (and counting!), and will once again probably be the largest single prize pool in esports.

TEAMS

DPC Invited teams

Virtus Pro - Region CIS

VP are once again one of the favorites to win this year's TI. This team had one of the best roster changes in the history of Dota, trading Lil to Navi for Rodjer. Ever since that roster change, VP has dominated the DPC the entire year: winning 4 majors, 1 minor and placing in the top 4 in other tournaments. These guys are scary, their drafts are ridiculous and have arguably the strongest players in each of their positions. This could be the year that they take the Aegis now that their team is less prone to tilt with Lil gone from the team.

April 28, 2019 - Update
VP has bounced back from their disappointing fifth place at The International. They have kept the same team for this season, except for kicking their old coach Artstyle with ArsZeeqq. ArsZeeqq has now coached VP to another Major victory in the current DPC season as well as two second place finishes at Chongqing Major as well as the Dreamleague Major. VP has now secured over 10950 DPC points and are the first team to qualify for TI9 later this year in Shanghai.

Team Liquid - TI7 Champions - Region Europe

The reigning champions Team Liquid had a tough DPC despite winning a few Minors. Even though they were still strong, they were not able to win any Majors until the last tournament in the DPC season, the China Dota 2 Supermajor. This is the first time in TI history that a defending champion can potentially win TI again with the same roster. Not much really to say other than they still look very good. The TI curse hasn't really hit them that bad and play some of the best Dota still to this day (even though they have dropped a few series to Pain Gaming along the way).

April 28, 2019 - Update
Liquid has had a rollercoaster of a season so far. They did not qualify for the first major and have had very disappointing finishes in the following two majors (CQ and Dreamleague with a 8th and 16th finish respectively). They have performed well in qualifiers as well as taking first place at the MegaFon Winter Clash as well as MDL Macau. They are at the bottom of the pack in the current DPC rankings and will need to make something happen if they want to qualify for TI9.

PSG.LGD - Region China

The best Chinese team by far this year, actually had a very rough start to the season. Formerly known only as LGD, they began a partnership with the French football team PSG. From there the rest is history, they placed 2nd at the Dota 2 Asia Championships, and followed that up by placing 1st at Epicenter and the MDL Changsha Major. If there is one contender for the throne this year from China, its these guys. Maybe aka Somnus丶M could finally win his first TI after so many disappointing finishes in the past.

April 28, 2019 - Update
PSG.LGD have had a disappointing 2018-2019 DPC season so far after their 2nd place finish at TI8. While they still have been taking consistent top 8 finishes, they haven't been able to even crack the top 3 at a DPC event so far. They haven't performed up to par, so Somnus`M decided to take a break this season. He's come back and crushed the qualifier to the MDL Disneyland Paris Major so maybe they'll having a better showing there.

Team Secret - Europe

Team Secret came out the gate swinging after TI7 last year with a new roster and winning the Dreamleague Major. New to the roster are FATA- and Ace, and had a fantastic start to the year. They had great placings the entire DPC but were suddenly started to get figured out towards the end. Known for their pretty out there/wacky drafts this time around, they have shown they can play many different heroes. The only problem is will Puppey (and coach SunBhie) be able to figure out the patch and be able to draft well? It remains to be seen as Secret has struggled since 2015 at TI.

April 28, 2019 - Update
Team Secret has had their annual roster change post TI, this time Fata and Ace left the team and Secret picked up Zai and Nisha (from Kinguin/Polish stack) to replace them to spectacular results. Once again Team Secret has taken another Major this season as well great finishes in the other two. Puppey's knack for finding dota talent is honestly always impressive, as Nisha has become one of THE STAR position 1 carries for this season. The team is starting to get a bit figured out though in typical Secret fashion as the season goes on. They finished 4th place at Dreamleague. Despite this they are sitting with 9300 DPC points and have become the second team to qualify for TI9.

Mineski - SEA
Mushi and IceIceIce (冰冰冰) linked up again to form a new squad in the SEA region. They earned their spot by defeating PSG.LGD at DAC 2018, which many attribute to their new coach, the legendary 71. Unfortunately they haven't been able to repeat that success and it's a mystery which Mineski will show up at TI. This is also the return to TI for both Mushi and iceicice, as they weren't able to qualify last year. Expect either the most exciting plays coming out from this team or just them getting demolished.

April 28, 2019 - Update
Mineski completely shuffled their roster minus Moon and Mushi after TI. New to the squad were JT-, Kpii (from Newbee) and Febby. After a mostly disappointing early season, they shuffled their roster again by adding Ah Jit and Pieliedie to replacce JT- and Mushi and qualified for the Dreamleague Major. The team bombed out of the major at 12th place and had yet ANOTHER roster shuffle. This time kicking the Febby/Pieliedie support duo for Bimbo and NinjaBoogie. They recently qualified for the Disneyland Paris major and took second place at ESL ONE Mumbai. Keep a lookout for them as they have been showing a lot of promise and potential.

Vici Gaming - China
The Chinese Cloud9, this team is lead by BIG DICK LANM this team has a couple of top 4 finishes and many second place finishes, but were never able to actually win a Major or Minor tournament. Despite this the team does look strong but will depend on how they play that day.

April 28, 2019 - Update
After a disappointing TI8 performance the team replaced Eleven, LanM, and Fenrir with Yang, Fade, and Dy alongside coach ROTK from VGJ Thunder. This change felt like the change LGD had done prior to the last season and filling the legendary team with new blood. VG has had an interesting road so far, but after not qualifying for the Chongqing Major, they've had a tough road grinding out games from the Chinese region as well as playing at the Minors. Something clicked and they won the Starladder Minor over perennial second Minor finishers Gambit. This then lead to possibly one of the most impressive Major runs culminating in the organization's first Major trophy. Finally they have removed their 2nd place curse, and have become the 4th team to qualify for TI9 with over 5850 DPC points (#3 on the DPC leaderboard though).

Newbee - China

The legendary TI curse didn’t affect Liquid much this year but it certainly did affect Newbee. The team had successful start to the season (even beating Liquid at ESL One Genting 3:2 in a TI7 rematch), but unfortunately the team began to struggle for much of 2018. Most people now think that Newbee’s success at TI7 was just how easy their bracket run was easy compared to Liquid. They had no roster changes so the team will be looking for a second chance at the Aegis of Immortal.

April 28, 2019 - Update
Newbee bombed out of TI8 and then the team completely fell apart. Everyone except for Moogy and SCCC have departed the team and Newbee just hasn't had anything going for them at all whatsoever this DPC season, not even qualifying for a single DPC event yet.

VGJ.Thunder - China

VGJ Thunder is the first of Jeremy Lin’s Dota 2 teams based out of China and they barely made it into the DPC top 8. Just like VG, this team had so many second place finishes (most notably 2nd place at the Bucharest Major vs VP) but began to fall apart as the DPC season went on. They were fortunately blessed with basically every other team disbanding/changing rosters (except for OpTic) that they were able to keep their spot as the last team on the DPC. Expectations for this team are very low, but it is TI and crazy things always happen at TI.

April 28, 2019 - Update
VGJ Thunder no longer exists.

Qualified Teams

North America Qualifier

VGJ.Storm

The second Jeremy Lin Dota 2 team, this time based out of New York actually went through many different iterations until we got to the team we have today. After the team disbanded (when BSJ was on the team), a new squad was picked up after they had won a few qualifiers. SVG is the captain of the team and previously played on C9, Team NP before EE kicked him, and was EG’s coach at TI6 and TI7.

Alongside him are MSS, Sneyking, Yawar (Sumail’s older brother) and Resolut1on. They became the top NA team after winning a couple of qualifiers, winning a Minor, and reaching the grand finals of a Major against PSG.LGD. There is a lot of potential for this team, but their recent showing at The Summit 9 was disappointing even though they did pick techies a few times.

April 28, 2019 - Update
The VGJ Storm stack left the organization to form Forward Gaming. They dropped Sneyking for Universe and were looking as one of the strongest teams in the world........on paper. Despite consistent qualifier runs to the major, nothing ever really clicked with the team as they kept bombing out of the DPC Majors. Resolution and Universe decided to take a break from competitive dota (Reso still on the team, Universe is out) and SVG just retired from Dota entirely. Since then the team has picked up CCNC, Sneyking and Kitrak. Aui remains as coach.

Jeremy Lin still kept the brand but this time removing the VG association. Now the org is known as J.Storm and currently has Moo, Bryle, Forev, Fear and March as their team in those respective positions. (the team has bombed out of every DPC event they've been in so far).

Evil Geniuses

The boys in blue are back after probably their most challenging year since the old EG (before PPD, Zai, Sumail, RTZ joined the team). Even though they had a great group stage, the team bombed out of TI7 suffering losses to Newbee and Team Empire. Zai left the team to join OpTic with PPD, and the team asked Fear to come back to playing.

But things didn’t look great and the team struggled to find their identity, which resulted in the team kicking Universe for Misery. EG was able to win a Minor with this iteration but started falling apart again. That's when the last minute roster change shook the world of Dota again. EG kicked Fear and Misery and added S4 and Fly from OG to the squad. The team looked pretty lost at the Supermajor, but were able to find their footing the TI8 NA Open Qualifiers, and managed to ride that momentum into getting the second qualifier spot from the NA regionals.

EG has since won The Summit 9 beating Fnatic 3-0 in the grand finals and now look really strong and an actual contender. Expect everyone in this thread/reddit/twitter to make fun of EG if they lose a game or gently caress up a play.

April 28, 2019 - Update
EG has kept the same squad from TI8 and have consistently placed 3rd place at their first two majors (ti 3rd place curse is real????). The teams looks very strong and there isn't much to say that they're still aiming for their first Major victory. Everyone is still at the top of their game, they just need better drafting and keep their composure. They were the third team to qualify for TI9 with over 4650 DPC points.

OpTic Gaming

PPD came back to pro Dota after TI7. He quit being the EG CEO and decided to sell his shares/ownership of the company and made a team with TI7 analysts: CCNC and Pajkatt. Zai left EG to join PPD, and they had Misery as their 5th player. Things didn’t really work out and OpTic had a tough start to the DPC season, then Misery left. 33 from Hellraisers ended up joining the team and swapped roles with Zai to become their 3 position player. Many now consider 33 the star player on the squad since he has incredible micro skills with Lycan and Visage (his signature heroes). The team then started to rack up some wins and managed to win a Minor, and were so close to being invited to TI, but weren’t able to make it in the end.

During the TI regional qualifiers, OpTic had a great group stage but ended up not winning the tiebreaker to qualify in the first slot. Thats when disaster struck and they ended up dropping a series to Immortals (ex-MVP squad minus 2 players) and were in trouble of not making it to TI. They did end up qualifying though after that initial scare. At the Summit 9 they looked a bit rough around the edges and seemed to have been figured out by both EG, VGJ storm and Fnatic (they even dropped a game to Pain in group stage). Its hard to know what to expect from this team, but here is one thing to consider: PPD has only gotten top 3 results at TI in his entire career. He may be able to pull it off again.

April 28, 2019 - Update
Optic has left the Dota 2 competitive scene and with it the team disbanded. PPD and 33 formed the squad that has since been picked up by Ninjas in Pyjamas with former secret players Ace/Fata and had Saksa join in as their 4 position player. CCNC toured around SA squads for a bit while also standing in for teams such as EG and now FWD Gaming. Zai joined Secret and Pajkatt joined OG. NiP essentially feels like Optic 2.0 to be honest. The EU scene post TI8 has become one of the more competitive regions so its been tough for NiP to qualify for some of the DPC events. They had a spectacular performance at the Kuala Lampur major with MindControl standing in, but haven't been able to repeat that success since. The team bombed out of Dreamleague Major and wasn't able to directly qualify for Disneyland Paris.

Fake Edit: UNTIL TODAY that is! NiP defeated Ehome 3-2 at the Dota Pit Minor and are going to Disneyland!

Europe Qualifier

OG

OG suffered what could have been one of the most devastating roster changes right before a TI and they didn’t even see them coming. After the loss of both their captain Fly and S4, the team had to find two new players to enter the EU open qualifier gauntlet. After showing some major promise last year when they replaced Ana for Resolut1on, the team ended up not really working at all and so Reso was kicked. The team tried to find a replacement but settled on their coach 7mad/Ceb as their new core player.

The team now consists of N0tail back on position 5, Jerax 4, 7mad 3, Topson 2, and Ana is back as the position 1 carry. They steamrolled through the qualifier, but recently played a BO5 showmatch against Immortals where they lost 3-2 (with March standing in for Dubu). I have zero expectations for this team and don’t really see them doing well at all unless they figure out something other teams don’t know about. This will also be Topson’s debut on the big stage.

E: Well I was completely loving wrong. OG did figure out something that no other team did! (buybacks) Say hello to your TI8 CHAMPIONS. OG !

April 28, 2019 - Update
OG has had a pretty bad DPC season post TI8. Ana took yet another break from Dota and OG picked up Pajkatt. Unfortunately the team just didn't feel like they gelled with him at all, so they kicked him and added long-time OG standin iLTW to become a full time player for the team. Since then, the team hasn't been able to qualify for the first three majors and had many disappointing finishes at the Minors. Now Ana is finally back and the original TI8 squad is finally back together and honestly they are looking very good again. They have now qualified for their first Major of the season. Oh and I guess they got bodied by the Open AI bots at that thing too.

CIS Qualifier

Winstrike Team

Winstrike aka FlyToMoon aka the Bitcoin team made a name for themselves at Epicenter for their dark horse run where they placed 3rd. They didn’t really make it to almost any other tournament during the DPC season though so they had to run through the qualifiers. There isn’t much to say other than this team plays classic CIS dota, they just run at you all the drat time. Notable names in this team you may recognize are previous TI attendees: Silent and Alwayswannafly. They look to lead their squad at their first TI appearance and upset as many teams as possible.

April 28, 2019 - Update
The team has shuffled and hasn't been able to repeat the success they had in the previous season.

South America Qualifier

Pain Gaming

South American Dota has been the butt of many jokes for a long time now, but Pain is looking to change that. After qualifying for many international tournaments, they had to rely on w33ha as a standin. They would do surprisingly well together and so towards the end of the DPC season, the team decided to pick up W33 as an official player for Pain. The results speak for themselves as the team has gone to become an actual threat during the DPC season. With players from the previous SG esports squad that upset Team Secret last year alongside W33 and now Misery as their coach, they are looking to redeem South American Dota in the eyes of the world.

April 28, 2019 - Update
Pain Gaming stack at TI8 is now a part of the rebranded Digital Chaos team: Chaos Esports Club! They still show a lot of promise but unfortunately still haven't been able to get a good at a DPC event yet. The jury is still out on this team.

SEA Qualifier

Fnatic

Eternal Envy is back at TI baby and this time probably has one of the best teams he’s ever assembled in his entire career. Its been quite the journey for this team as they have replaced two of their original members (Ohayo and Xcalibur) with Universe and Abed. The star power on this team is undeniable, you have players like DJ making huge plays and Abed winning games by himself. Pieliedie is also on the team as one would expect from an EE team. This doesn’t mean much has changed on how EE teams perform, they still make crazy comebacks, finish at 2nd place, and make crazy hosed up throws. Honestly its going to be a fun team to watch but at the same time could be boring as well since their games usually go very long! The meme that has now become reality is that the team doesn’t really come online until a bunch of anime poo poo starts happening like losing two sets or racks and EE somehow, someway finds a way back to win the game.

April 28, 2019 - Update
Fnatic post TI8 built a team around DJ and Abed. Mp, Iceiceice and Jabz have joined and have been the dark horse to almost every Major. They reached 3rd place at the Dreamleague major, showing off they are a tier 1 team that can stand amongst the likes of VP and Secret. Definitely keep a lookout for them.

TNC Predator

TNC bombed out of TI last year in the bracket just like EG did and basically lost their identity as a team. They ended up kicking 1437 and adding Armel, moving Kuku to position 5 and things started looking back up again for them….some of the time. You really never know what TNC you will get at a tournament, they will either stomp or get stomped. They’re known to take off games from the tier 1 teams like VP but haven’t been able to translate that to success throughout this season. Expect a lot of SEA level plays for sure. Also watch their games with the Filipino casters.

April 28, 2019 - Update
TNC Predator has had a uh...interesting season. Kuku essentially created one of the worst situations for all of professional Dota after it was discovered that he had used many slurs against the Chinese in his pubs. This was made worse due to the fact that his manager attempting to cover it up by photoshopping logs. The Chinese community quickly discovered that it was Kuku after all and decided to have him banned from the city of Chongqing(alongside Skem for doing the same thing but at a MINOR). Eventually after so much drama and excuses, Valve finally stepped in and formally banned Kuku from attending the event as well as penalizing TNC for creating this awful situation. The damage has been pretty bad and a new world of racism against the Chinese region has popped up with people like Bulldog foolishly riling up the western fanbase. Since then, Kuku has taken a break from playing and then came back. They bombed out of the qualifiers and placed 4th at ESL Mumbai. After a couple of shuffles the team is now a bit more stable and recently has had HEEN, Team Liquid's coach for their TI7 run join the organization full time as their coach. We'll see what the future holds for TNC.

China Qualifier

Team Serenity

These guys legit came out of nowhere to win the Chinese qualifier surprising everybody. Who are they!? Well they all used to play on Academy or Tier 2 teams in China for a while. XinQ used to play in NA with the Void Boys (rip) for a bit, but other than that these guys are pretty unknown. It has caused this effect of many people to look their replays up since not much is really known about this team really. They could very well end up being the CDEC for this year. They beat LFY (3rd place at TI7) and IG to get here, it remains to see how they will do at TI.

April 28, 2019 - Update
Serenity basically disappeared off the map except for winning a WSOE Lan at Las Vegas that was essentially a tournament for Tier 2 teams. Star player XinQ left for Ehome, and other than that yeah not much else to know about this team other than they got to 2nd place at the second WSOE Las Vegas lan.

Invictus Gaming

The org that won TI2 is back with BurNing as a coach. So here’s the thing about this team. They were pretty bad the entire DPC. I guess Valve wants a China victory since they gave China 2 slots for TI. They only made it to two DPC events this season and their play at the regionals was very sloppy. The team has recognizable faces such as Agressif, Boboka, and Q, but expectations for this team are very very low.

April 28, 2019 - Update
The team completely disbanded after TI8 group stage (they also rage quit out of being at press day). Its been rough for the new IG squad as they haven't had a stable roster yet that can deliver results like they used to.

Remember when the mid lane, the "true"* solo lane, turned into another dual lane, even tri-lane sometimes because people realized bringing in another dude really helps in a 1v1?
