Flash! The forest burns as the demon's flame consumes the trees. A smoke-obscured figure tries to run, but can't escape the conflagration before it, too, is wreathed in fire. A frightened couple, silhouetted by the blaze, converse in hushed tones, hoping not to draw the rampaging monster's attention.

The woman speaks, her voice unsteady and hoarse with age and exhaustion. "Do you really think it will work? Even for a prophecy, it sounds pretty far-fetched."

Her husband replies, trying to convince himself as much as his wife, "Stranger things have happened. And if it doesn't, what have we lost? Our only hope is that they will come to save us, before the entire island is ash."

The identity of these potential saviors is left unsaid, as the pair continue fleeing into the night.

A new adventure begins...

Mitano-Roppongi, Tokyo, Japan, 2:35 PM, Sunday

The day has finally arrived. At long last, kids will have someplace to hang out in the usually adult-oriented Roppongi District. The location was chosen carefully, a few blocks away from the nightclubs and bars, nestled among the outlying businesses, but still close enough to maintain that allure of the mature that appeals to disaffected youths. It's a child's wonderland, filled with all the latest technology and boasting attractions that can't be found anywhere else.

It's Game Center 「DIGITAL WORLD」!

The bright lights and raucous sounds of arcade games beckon, calling out to those who seek excitement, adventure, or just an escape from the real world. Who will be drawn in by its siren song?

(Alrighty, the game is afoot! As reminders and for convenience, the rules I wrote, and may yet modify in future if need be, are here, the recruit/OOC chat thread is here, and the Discord channel (open to spectators) is here. Be sure to include a copy of your character sheet at the bottom of your first post, just in case the OOC thread gets archived.)

Mitano-Roppongi, Tokyo, Japan, 4:44 PM, Sunday

As the bright lights and exciting games of Game Center 「DIGITAL WORLD」 command the attention of the various patrons, the six unassuming youths eventually notice that they are the only people left in the arcade. Erika is the first to notice, as her latest racing victory is rendered hollow by the empty chair next to her. Not a single other child remains, and even the staff are nowhere to be found. Perhaps the din of the machines drowned out their departure, but that doesn't explain why everyone suddenly left.

Suddenly, as if on cue, row by row, starting from the front of the game center, the machines begin to shut down, their lights going dark, and screens turning blank. When the process is finished, the only machine left active is one that none of the kids had paid any attention to. As far as any of them had noticed, not a single patron had used the machine all day. It's a large, garish booth, striped in red and white. A small console with a keyboard is embedded next to the closed door of the booth, that it remains lit is the only indication that this machine still functions.

What will the six children do, faced with this most bizarre mystery?

Mitano-Roppongi, Tokyo, Japan, 4:47 PM, Sunday

As soon as the kids begin to interact with the mysterious arcade booth, there is a soft crackling sound as a conical loudspeaker mounted to the machine's corner comes to life. A male voice begins speaking, his voice slightly tinny from the low quality of the speaker.

"Ah, welcome, children, and congratulations! You've been pre-selected and pre-approved for a one-of-kind experience! Guaranteed to do away with all boredom, malaise, ennui, melancholy, childhood angst, and any and all cases of the doldrums! And as luck would have it, there's room for six! Just step right up, deposit your fare, and your grand adventure will begin!"

The loudspeaker goes quiet, and while there doesn't appear to be any form of intercom, the machine somehow knew how many children were in the room, so it stands to reason that whoever was just speaking may be able to hear any questions they might (and almost certainly do) have.

As Mika fools with the keyboard, the screen only records her inputs. When a certain number of characters have been input, the screen briefly flashes red, displaying a message of "INVALID PASSCODE" and then resets. The man operating the loudspeaker seems to notice this, and speaks up.

"That's not going to do much, young lady, that console's just for inputting the password, which you'll be provided once everyone's deposited their tokens. We wouldn't want just anyone wandering in here. Fortunately, the six of you have been chosen for this one-of-a-kind experience! As the final token clatters into the machine, the mysterious voice makes an announcement.

"Well done, children! Now, simply input the following passcode, and prepare for excitement beyond your wildest imagination!"

The voice then began declaring characters, slowly enough that Mika could type them in easily.

"@[=g3,8d]\&fbb=-q]/hk%fg"

As the last is typed into the console, there is an affirmative beep as the screen flashes green, displaying the message "PASSCODE ACCEPTED". With a sharp, hydraulic hiss, the door to the booth slowly opens, and the console begins sinking back into the machine. Once far enough back, the console turns around, and returns to its position, now revealing a set of six small devices, held in individual alcoves.

Once the door is fully opened, the voice continues its explanation. "Now, take your Digivice and step inside, adventure awaits!"

As the group steps into the machine, the door closes behind them, leaving them in the pitch darkness of the arcade booth. The "Digivices" don't react to inputs, but one could reasonably assume they'll become active once the machine starts whatever it's designed to do. It doesn't take long for something to happen, as mere seconds after the door has sealed shut, the chamber begins to light up. The walls, floor, and ceiling all shine with a pure, white light. Despite being bright enough that the surfaces themselves are rendered impossible to see, this brightness causes the children no discomfort or difficulty seeing each other. This light is paired with an audible hum, like a fluorescent light help up to a megaphone. Neither effect lasts more than a minute, at which point the room goes dark once more. Additionally, something else has changed, in a most curious fashion.

The floor is gone.

And the six children plummet into the darkness.

LOCATION UNKNOWN, 15:F$!4q ERROR: CLOCK FUNCTION HAS CRASHED

As the children fall, some of them manage to cling to one another, while Mika only succeeds in pushing herself further away from the group. Oddly, while she should have bumped against a wall as she knocked herself away, she instead kept going into empty space. She doesn't have much time to ponder this, however, nor does anyone else, as the speed of their descent causes them to lose consciousness.

Yuki and Erika

As the school all-stars come to, they find they're still clinging to each other. They're on the floor of what appears to be a large forest, with trees in every direction. Strangely, none of the branches above them seem to have been disturbed by their fall, though their lack of injury suggests that some force may have intervened. They have no time to get their bearings, however, as a rough, but childlike voice sounds near them, joined immediately by a higher, more nasally, but equally youthful voice.

"Hey, they're awake!"

"See! I told you we can't eat 'em! They're probably the ones Jijimon told us about!"

"Really? They look pretty weak..."

The source of the chatter is much lower to the ground than one might expect from a person, and the reason for this is made clear as soon as the pair of girls get a good look at the speakers.

Kimiko and Teru

The last thing Kimiko recalls before passing out is someone grabbing onto her leg. She and Teru wake up together in an open clearing, inside some sort of forest. A few dozen yards in one direction, there looks to be a beach of some kind, the water gently splashing against the shore. More pressingly, not far from the pair are a couple of strange creatures, one some sort of green ball covered in spikes, the other what looks like some kind of beanbag toy modeled after a cat. The green thing speaks first, but the yellow cat thing isn't far behind. Their voices are high, like cutesy cartoon mascots.

"Hey, are you okay?!"

"You were asleep for a loooong time!"

"But we were told we should wait here for you!"

"I'm Nyaromon, and she's Budmon!"

In unison, they declare, "And you're the heroes!"

Zak

Zak awakens to a pair of beady, black eyes, barely an inch from his own. Their owner starts, however, falling back onto Zak's stomach, and Zak can see a thick canopy of branches above him. The creature currently sitting atop Zak looks like some sort of pinkish-white blob. Its voice comes out almost like buzzing, but more organic.

"Uwah! You're finally awake! I am Motimon, and I was chosen to be your partner!"

Mika

As Mika comes to, she is finds herself on a sandy beach, face down. Next to her is a tiny, four legged white creature, with long, white antennae. It yawns, revealing row upon row of razor-sharp teeth, like a shark on steroids. Upon noticing Mika's consciousness, it seems to jump for joy.

"Hooray! You're alive! Um, well, for now..."

The creature makes a meaningful glance towards Mika's other side, where she finds another unfamiliar creature staring at her, this one green, with sharp fangs, a wicked-looking club, and standing about seven feet tall. It speaks with a harsh, gravelly voice.

"Hey, you're awake! Hurry up and get ready!"

Zak

Motimon recovers fairly easily as he's thrown from Zak's body, though as he has a camera waved in his face, he bring a hand to his mouth in a look of confusion and concern.

"I'm... Motimon?" The puzzled creature complies with Zak's request, before addressing its own questions. "Are you okay? Did you hit your head? Jijimon said you might need some guidance, I guess this is what he meant."

Mika

The big, green monster raises its club as it declares, "I'm gonna rob you! I've never gotten to do this before, you're the first human I've ever seen in the Digital World, so now I can finally fulfill my purpose! Gimme yer money!" He waves his club in a threatening fashion as he makes his demand, but the smaller creature leaps to Mika's defense. "Knock it off, Ogremon! It's my sworn duty to protect this hero of prophecy!"

The monster, Ogremon, apparently, gives the little white thing a dismissive look. "And what's a runty little Tokomon like you gonna do?! You know how long I've been waiting to shake down innocent travelers?!"

The two continue trading tough talk, leaving open the path into the forest behind Mika.

Kimiko and Teru

The two creatures look at Teru quizzically.

"A game?" asks Budmon.

"This definitely isn't a game," adds Nyaromon, "You're the heroes that are prophesized to save the Digital World!"

"Yeah, yeah!" Budmon bounces excitedly. "We're gonna get to Digivolve!"

As Budmon bounces, she bumps against Kimiko, and a glow suddenly begins emanating from somewhere on her person. The source turns out to be the odd little toy that had been given to everyone. Her Digivice. The screen was now lit, and displayed a pixelated image of Budmon's face, going dark after several seconds. Nyaromon, seeing this, deftly hops over Kimiko and into Teru, causing a similar reaction in her Digivice.

Nyaromon looks up at Teru, smiling, "Now we're partners! I don't know about 'rules', so to speak, but I can help explain things to you if you're confused."

Yuki and Erica

The grayish creature puts its ear-limb-thing into Erica's hand as a way of returning her handshake, apparently understanding the gesture. The appendage seems to just be a soft lump of matter. If this creature has any bones, Erica can't tell. However, the handshake causes her Digivice to glow, the screen displaying what looks like the creature's face.

Introducing himself in his nasally tone, he says, "I'm Pagumon, and it looks like we're partners! Over there is Frimon, don't mind him, he's got a bad attitude."

"Go jump in the recycle bin," mutters Frimon, his frills widening with agitation. "Pagumon just doesn't get jokes, he spends too much time reading those weird paper things Jijimon has all over his house. Guess you're my partner, goggle girl."

He bounces toward her and boops himself against her shin, confirming his theory with the glow from her Digivice.

Mika

Ogremon immediately takes the offering. "Wow, that was easy! Kind of a let-down, I was hopin' I'd get to chase ya around a little," He greedily tears open the package of gummies and dumps the lot of them into his gaping maw. He chews them thoughtfully for a few seconds, but then his chewing slows, and he grows still. Then

"FUNGYAAAAAAAAH! Why you!"

Ogremon screams in pain and waves his club angrily, infuriated by Mika's prank. Suddenly, in the middle of his rage, he freezes, audibly choking mid-roar, as a dark aura begins to envelop him. The air grows thick with an unknown power, and then Ogremon's eyes begin to glow red. He's no longer flailing around comically, and his mien has taken on a menacing, predatory edge. His voice comes out in raspy breaths now. "Kill... Destroy...!"

Tokomon, for his part, looks utterly terrified. "O-oh no, you really shouldn't have gotten him mad! I don't think we're ready for this yet! We need to run away!"

Zak

Motimon replies, "Oh, I haven't seen any other humans, but Jijimon told us that there would be six of you, and where you'd fall. And of course we're friends, you're going to save the Digital World!"

Motimon's explanation is cut short, however, by the sound of a loud roar coming from a fair distance away. He tugs at the collar of Zak's shirt, pointing toward the origin of the noise. "It sounds like trouble, let's go! Hopefully the others are on their way, too, so we can work together!"

Yuki and Erica

Pagumon responds, "This is no game, the fate of the Digital World is in our hands! We need to work together to save everyone!"

Frimon adds, "Yeah, those Digivices will help us Digivolve and get stronger, so we can kick more butt!"

However, just as Pagumon is about to explain the nature of his appendages, he's interrupted by a far-off roar. "Hey, Erica, it sounds like someone's in trouble! We gotta go save them!"

Frimon is already tugging at Yuki's pant leg with his tiny mouth, his voice muffled by the effort, "Mmph, yeh, c'mon, weh gobba go!"

Kimiko and Teru

Budmon is the first to reply to Kimiko's question. "We're Digimon! We live here, in the Digital World! When we Digivolve, we get bigger and stronger, so we can protect everyone!"

Nyaromon takes over, adding coolly, "According to Jijimon, our elder, your Digivices-"

Her explanation is cut off by roaring coming from the direction of the beach, a ways down from the section visible through the trees. Nyaromon immediately starts hopping towards the source, Budmon hurrying along behind her. "That's our cue! I'll explain the rest on the way!"

As Mika flees from Ogremon, Tokemon in her arms, she nearly collides with Zak and Motimon. Motimon is the first to speak.

"Hey! Tokomon! What's going on?"

"It's Ogremon, my partner gave him some kind of snack and he got really mad and then that thing happened again, just like Mr. Piddomon!"

"Oh no! Ogremon's cranky enough when he's not crazy! By the way, this is Zak, I think he's a bit mixed-up right now but I'll whip him into shape in no time!"

"Let's save it for after we stop Ogremon!"

Ogremon has been slowly advancing during this exchange, pausing to lash out at the trees, felling them with a single swing of his club. Tokomon and Motimon leap from their partners' arms, taking a combat stance, preparing for his arrival, apparently quite confident, now that there are more than one of them. As Ogremon closes the distance, two more humans burst from the trees. It's Teru and Kimiko, with Nyaromon and Budmon. Nyaromon is the first to leap towards Ogremon, with Budmon following behind. Nyaromon calls out, "Motimon, Tokomon, are you okay?"

Tokomon replies, "Yeah, you're just in time!"

Now surrounding Ogremon, the tiny Digimon strike what, in larger, less cute beings, might be intimidating combat poses as Ogremon prepares to attack. Then, in practiced unison, they all shout, "DIGIVOLVE!"

And nothing happens. And then Ogremon lunges at Tokomon.

(Looks like you guys will need to make the best of a bad situation for the moment, plus Erica and Yuki were far enough off that they won't be here until the next round of combat.)

Vs. Ogremon

Changing targets following Erica's taunting, Ogremon's club connects firmly with her solar plexus, sending her reeling back, the breath knocked from her lungs. Tapirmon quickly floats to her side to make sure she's alright. Luckily, nothing seems to be broken afterwards.

The second volley of attacks from Liollmon and the others is enough to push Ogremon into a nearby tree, knocking loose a broken branch, which lands squarely on the berserk Digimon's head. The black cloud hisses out a noise like static, and slowly dissipates into dark particles, dispersing into the surrounding atmosphere. Rubbing the bump on his head, Ogremon blinks slowly and looks around.

"Ugh... feel like I got hit by a Locomon. H-hey! There weren't this many humans a second ago, no fair!"

As Ogremon protests what he seems to see as a sudden development, Liollmon moves to continue his attack, apparently unaware in the change of circumstances. Fortunately, Floramon steps between the two and begins to explain. "Ogremon, you were acting really crazy just a minute ago, just take a deep breath. And he's okay now, Liollmon, so you calm down, too!"

As Liollmon backs off to sulk, Kunemon takes over the explanation. "Digimon that are usually nice have been getting covered by some kind of black mist whenever they get too mad, and then they get really violent."

As Ogremon hears the explanation, he nods with understanding. "Sounds like what happened to my buddy, Golemon, after I ate his snacks. I had to run like crazy to get away from him! I just thought he really wanted those snacks. So what's with the humans?"

Salamon jumps in with a reply. "They're the legendary heroes of prophecy, the ones Jijimon's always talking about! They're here to save us!"

Penguinmon adds, "We should probably go see Jijimon and Babamon now, they made a camp for all the normal Digimon to stick together after their house got burned down. You should come with us, Ogremon, you'll be safer there. You might be a big bully, but I wouldn't want you to get hurt. Just don't try 'robbing' anyone else."

Ogremon shrugs his acquiescence as he nurses his assorted wounds and mumbles a weak apology in Mika's direction. The other Digimon turn back to their partners expectantly, waiting for confirmation on the current plan of action.

(Victory! Ogremon has turned back to normal! Now you can finally get some exposition answers. As the scene is over, Erica recovers 1 Stress.)

LOCATION UNKNOWN

When Yuki scratches behind Liollmon's ears, he leans into it at first, but, a moment later, tenses up and hops away, looking deeply embarrassed by his initial reaction. "H-hey! What's the big idea?" Tapirmon, on the other hand, seems quite happy to accept the pat on the trunk offered by Erica. This helps lighten the mood a little as the other Digimon chuckle at the flustered Liollmon, and Salamon moves to guide the humans, saying, "Jijimon's camp is this way, follow me."

Time and distance pass uneventfully, and while the Digimon mostly suggest that this "Jijimon" would be better-suited to answering most questions, the children are able to glean a certain amount of information. First, the Digital World is, according to the Digimon, a universe that exists parallel to the real world, made entirely of computer data, and is as old as the first computer networks. However, the Digital World is not made of the literal data within people's computers, as damage to one is not reflected in the other, and the actual connection between the two is poorly-understood. The children's current location is known as Pointer Island, a fairly small, out-of-the-way location compared to the larger continents found across the Objective Sea. Digimon, the creatures the make up the vast majority of life within the Digital World, are universally sapient. Strangely, while some Digimon are numerous, analogous to a species of animal, others are wholly unique. Apparently, Jijimon and his wife, Babamon, are in this latter category, a pair of Digimon rumored to be as old as the Digital World itself. Digimon are born from eggs in a place called the Village of Beginnings, in forms even smaller than those the kids had encountered earlier. Any Digimon that's destroyed is eventually reborn there, as well. It's apparently rumored that similar villages are found elsewhere in the Digital World, as other landmasses exist, and not every Digimon on them came from Pointer Island.

The problems on the island began some several weeks ago, when something fell from the sky, crashing into the north end of the island. Since then, whenever a Digimon got angry enough, they would be possessed by some sort of dark energy, and lash out at those around them. This apparently happened to a Digimon referred to as "Mr. Piddomon", the local schoolteacher. It seems that class had been especially rowdy a few days ago, and Liollmon (Frimon, really; the Digimon make no distinction between their current and former identities, curiously) chose that moment to provoke him. The Village of Beginnings had to be evacuated to escape his rampage, but fortunately nobody was hurt. The young Digimon grow quiet at this, clearly blaming themselves for what had happened. Ogremon takes over the explanation, and while his knowledge of the Digital World at large is all but nonexistent, he's able to explain that the forests on the northern half of the island were burned down the other night. He clarifies that yes, he means the entire northern half of the island, he saw it from the rocky hill he lives on, over on the island's west side. The others add that nobody knows who started the fire, or why, but Jijimon and Babamon were forced from their homes, and several Digimon were destroyed. The whole island might have been consumed if the remaining sane Digimon hadn't come together to fight the blaze. Since then, everyone's been staying together, aside from relative outcasts like Ogremon.

It's at this point that the children notice a thin plume of smoke in the distance, evidence of a campfire. A few minutes later, they find themselves in a large clearing, filled with Digimon. The first to catch their eye is a small, red Digimon surrounded by even tinier, blobbier Digimon than the likes of Motimon or Budmon. Salamon identifies him as Elecmon, the caretaker of the Village of Beginnings, charged with safeguarding baby Digimon. Other assorted Digimon are putting together simple structures, preparing food, chopping firewood, or performing other everyday tasks for a rural, agrarian community. The Digimon lead their partners to the one finished structure in the camp, in front of which sits a large clump of hair with limbs and a walking stick topped with a cat's paw, next to an elderly woman with a broom and slate-colored skin. They practically leap from their rocking chairs as the humans approach, and excitedly greet their guests.

"Oh-ho! You've brought them! Very well done, younglings! And, uhm, you brought Ogremon, too? What a pleasant surprise...," the old man seems less than enthused about the unexpected addition to the group. "Well, where are my manners? Welcome, chosen ones! My name is Jijimon! There is much for you to do to fulfill your destinies, first y-ouch!"

Jijimon's attempt at a speech is interrupted by a whack to the noggin with his wife's broom. "Sorry about him, dearies, he can be a little excitable at times, hardly becoming of a Digimon his age. I'm Babamon, and I'm just pleased as punch to see you all! Yes, even you, Ogremon. Come in, come in, I'll put some tea on."

Babamon shuffles into the small abode, beckoning the humans to follow.

(Before anyone asks, yes, there's enough room for everyone to fit, though it'll be a tad crowded. So, this post is the last of the exposition that your Digimon partners will be spouting, for the most part, so portrayal of the Digimon is now turned over to the players.)

Pointer Island, Refugee Camp

As the children file into the elders' makeshift home, the baby Digimon calling happily after Zak, they're able to take seats around small table as Babamon sets out some tea and cookies, both of which prove safe for human consumption if tried. Jijimon takes a seat and yawns loudly, looking down quietly for several long moments before it becomes apparent that he's fallen asleep.

Babamon shakes her head as she notices, but decides to let him sleep for now. "Never mind him, dearies, we've all had a rough week. Don't you worry, I'll set you straight. Now, what do you know already?"

As she gathers what the humans have been informed about previously, she nods with understanding. "Good, good, that's most of it. Oh, one small detail, we consulted the old scrolls, and apparently you heroes've got a name, the 'Digidestined'. S'got a nice ring to it, don'tcha think? Now, we didn't want to get everyone all up in a panic, but there's a little more to the story. Y'see, Jijimon and I heard whoever it was that burned the forest. He was yellin' something about 'heralding his master' or some other nonsense. Sounds like whatever crashed into the island might be more than just some meteor, it might even be a Digimon, crazy as it sounds. Now, if'n it's got a follower that can set a whole forest ablaze, it's clearly nobody to trifle with. If you want to stand a chance, you'll have to master the secret of Digivolution."

Babamon waves her hands theatrically as she mentions Digivolution. "Now, Digivolving into your current forms is a nice start, but it's gonna get a lot harder from there. To reach more powerful stages, it's said that two things are required. The first is that the Digidestined must strengthen their bonds with their partners, and focus their wills. How you do that, I think you'll have to work out for y'selves. The second is crisis. Y'gotta be in a pretty tense situation to spark the light of Digivolution, y'see. Fortunately, the silver lining to all this trouble 'round the island is, we got plenty of danger to go 'round."

Babamon takes a scroll from her robes and unfurls it over the center of the table, revealing a map, presumably of Pointer Island. "This is Pointer Island, we're here, near the middle, and you all came in here, by the southern beach. Now, there's a good four Digimon we know of that have gone crazy-"

"Five! Golemon's got that black smoke stuff, too," Ogremon interrupts.

"Oh, my, I'm sorry t'hear that, Ogremon, we'll try to set him right, too. So, five Digimon have gone crazy around the island. You heard about Mr. Piddomon, he's still rampaging around the Village of Beginnings, last I heard. Golemon, he's probably still in the hills to the west of the island. North of there, there's some craggy mountains where Tuskmon's stomping about. There's Tortomon, he's down by the beach, a few miles east of where you showed up. Last is Yanmamon, he'll be tough to find since he's so fast, he's in the insect Digimon hives, a bit to the northeast, not far from the burned-out part of the forest. I think you should all split up, one each. The last of ya ought to head up to the burned-down forest, see if you can find the Digimon responsible."

Babamon fishes a crystal ball out from beneath the table, and sets it down on the map. "Now, yer all free to handle this how you think is best, you're the heroes'n all, but the least I can do is a little divination, give you some advice." Babamon appears to fall into a trance, and begins mumbling her guidance. "Hmmm, yes, I see. Tortomon's hard shell can best be cracked by nature's gifts. The enemy that awaits in the forest of ash will fall to the lion's roar. The teacher, who bears holy power, is best dealt with using the same."

Babamon comes out of her trance. "That is all I could see, though, Kunemon will probably have an easier time getting around the insect hives, bein' an insect Digimon, himself."

Ogremon pipes up again. "And I'm goin' with whoever takes on Golemon, I gotta help my buddy out!"

(Alright, now, pick your solo adventure. Despite Babamon's visions, there are no wrong answers, obviously.)

Pointer Island, Refugee Camp

As the Digidestined make their decisions, Jijimon finally wakes up. "Oh! Sorry, kids, looks like I dozed off, there! Now, where was I? Oh, yes! Now, legend has it-"

Babamon cuts him off, "I already told them, dear, they're already preparing to head out."

Jijimon looks crestfallen. "Aw, digisticks! Been waitin' to do that all week. Well, good luck to you on your journeys, and may you be successful in discovering the secrets of Digivolution."

As the Digidestined begin to leave, Zak is quickly swarmed by baby Digimon, bouncing around him like a ball pit come to life. They babble unintelligibly as they vie for prime snuggling position. Elecmon approaches, giving the quadrupedal equivalent of a helpless shrug. "Sorry about the kids, fella, they can be a real handful. Y'know, lookin' at ya, I think I got something that might be useful someday. There's another like it back in the Village of Beginnings, but this was all I could carry. Nobody's sure what they're for, they're definitely not Digimon eggs, but I just get this feeling that this one belongs with you."

As he's speaking, Elecmon trots over to where he'd been managing the baby Digimon previously and produces an egg-like object, which he brings to Zak, putting it into his hands. The egg is a vivid shade of red, with a symmetrical, but otherwise indecipherable, pattern of lines over it, and emblazoned with a symbol that looks like two circles of different sizes connected by a short line, with smaller circles inside each.

Shortly after this, Elecmon finally manages to convince his wards to leave Zak be for now, and starts setting them down for naps. With this, the Digidestined, and Ogremon, start going their separate ways.

(So, based on the geography, since I'm not a good enough artist to do a map, Mika, Erica, and Ogremon are all headed in roughly the same direction for a while, until Erica needs to cut further north. Yuki and Zak will be briefly going in the same direction, but Zak will be turning eastward not long into the trip. Teru is headed southwest, while Kimiko is headed southeast.)

Zak and Kunemon

After reaching their compromise, it doesn't take long before the insect hives come into view. Intricate structures made mostly of plant matter adorn the nearby tree trunks, climbing up into the canopy, dozens of feet in the air, where they gradually become interconnected, like some great termite nest. However, there are gaping holes in the structures, as if something had crashed through them. Before either human or Digimon can question this, they begin to hear a faint buzzing in the distance, approaching rapidly. Seconds later, a yellowish blur smashes through the side of a nearby structure, zooming past the pair and back out of earshot. The black wisps left in its wake make clear that Zak and Kunemon have found their target.

Yuki and Liollmon

Not long after parting with Zak, Yuki and Liollmon find a curious sight on the road. At first, it appears to Yuki to be a fallen, burnt tree, though they're not due to arrive at the burnt portion of the forest for another few hours. However, when the charred figure begins to cough and groan in pain, it becomes clear that this is another Digimon. Thanks to Pointer Island being a pretty small place, with a tight-knit community, Liollmon has no trouble identifying the blackened stump as Woodmon. Deep tracks trailing behind Woodmon indicate that he crawled all this way, rather than walked. He croaks out a few words, sounding just as bad as he looks. "A human...? Looks like... Jijimon wasn't crazy... after all. Be... careful. Me..." He trails off, and his body disintegrates into particles that float into the sky, the mysterious arsonist's last victim finally succumbing to his injuries.

Kimiko and Floramon

Kimiko hasn't been on the road for very long when she begins to feel as though someone were watching her. This feeling is soon backed up by the occasional faint rustling in the trees behind her.

Teru and Salamon

The Village of Beginnings isn't far from the refugee camp, and as it comes into view, it's clear that trouble remains afoot, as an explosion is heard, and a cloud of dust rises from somewhere in the village. A furious roar follows this, and Salamon can easily tell that it's Piddomon. Only angel Digimon like him could sound so pleasant while crying out in rage.

Kimiko and Floramon

As she calls out, a large shape swings down from the canopy, hanging from a tree branch. It's a large, apelike Digimon, with bright yellow hair. In his free hand, he holds what appears to be a sketch pad and pen.

"Apologies for the worry. I am Apemon. I've never seen a human before, and I wanted to make some sketches, for reference. I'm a painter, you see, but I've already painted everything else on Pointer Island. Though, I suppose I'll need to start over; the fire burned up my collection."

Yuki and Liollmon

As Yuki approaches the burnt-down portion of the forest, she starts to see the charred, blackened trees, many of which still give off small amounts of smoke. Ash covers the ground like snow, her footprints leaving clear marks in her wake. In the distance, a single fire still burns, tall and bright, like a beacon.

Mika and Penguinmon

Ogremon shrugs, followed by a boisterous laugh. "Don't worry about it, I can't help but respect a trick like that! We don't have anything that spicy on the island, but I'll have to remember that gag!" It isn't long before Erica and Tapirmon start cutting north, perhaps a little earlier than strictly necessary, leaving Mika alone with two Digimon. It's Ogremon that breaks the silence this time. "So, uh, what's a 'Robin Hood', anyway?"

Zak and Kunemon

A cursory examination reveals that the insect hives, while well-constructed, are made of fairly flimsy materials, similar to the rice paper used in some old-fashioned Japanese houses. Yanmamon appears to be avoiding the trees, so it may be that he can't break through solid wood so easily. So far, it doesn't look like the infected Digimon has noticed the pair in its rampage, but it's unclear how long that will last.

Teru and Salamon

Teru has no trouble finding the necessary materials with which to craft a surprisingly sturdy net. However, as she works, she can hear Piddomon drawing closer, and soon, his raving becomes clearly audible.

"Detention! Detention! Permanent detention! Apollo Tornado!"

At this last cry, one of the buildings in the village is surrounded by a vortex of flame, the toy-like structure soon engulfed in fire.

Kimiko and Floramon

Apemon appears to think for a moment before responding. "It's not a long walk, unless you are very slow, but it's also not a short walk, unless you are very fast." He walks alongside Kimiko, continuing to sketch as he goes. "You know, it's not often that I can really talk about art with anyone, the other Digimon don't really seem to understand it. Is it like that for you back in the human world?"

Zak and Kunemon

At first, Yanmamon keeps speeding past Zak, seemingly oblivious to his insults. However, after a couple minutes of concentrated invective, the Digimon stops, finally revealing itself to be a giant dragonfly. It turns towards Zak and releases a hostile buzzing sound as the cloud of dark energy catches up and surrounds it. It angrily buzzes, "Thunder Ray!" and curls its tail upwards. Then, a blast of lightning arcs from its tail, aimed squarely at Zak.

(Make an Athletics roll to dodge or take 2 Stress. Kunemon may attempt an intercept as though this were combat.)

Mika and Penguinmon

Ogremon appears mildly disappointed. "Oh, uh, that's cool, I guess. I mean, I kinda prefer keeping it for myself...," he trails off sheepishly, leading to an awkward silence. However, it isn't long until something happens to draw the group's attention. As they near the hills where Ogremon and Golemon live, it's easy to see that many of the outlying trees have been knocked over, broken like twigs. The culprits remain at the scene, massive boulders that litter this section of forest. Ogremon starts to look worried. "Ah, geez, Golemon must've been throwing rocks all over the place, hope he doesn't-ack!" the words die in his throat as he spots something in the distance. Another boulder is sailing through the air, falling right towards Mika's group.

(Roll Penguinmon's Power or Defense to block the boulder, with +2 from Ogremon's assistance, Penguinmon takes 1 Stress regardless if you use Defense. Alternately, roll Penguinmon's Speed and Mika's Athletics separately to dodge.)

Teru and Salamon

While Teru makes a good effort to throw her net, she ends up stepping on a particularly brittle twig, and draws Piddomon's attention. Seeing the net flying towards him, he draws his wings back and shouts, "Fire Feather!" He flaps his wings forward, launching a volley of burning feathers that burn several holes in the net. However, Teru's quality construction allows it to hold its shape, and it does manage to wrap itself over Piddomon, who looks none too pleased as he falls to the ground. "Another prankster, huh?! I think it's time for some corporal punishment!" He maneuvers the staff he's carrying, and uses the bladed tip to slash away the net surrounding him, though he neglects to free his wings in his haste to punish what he seems to see as a misbehaving student.

(Piddomon is currently unable to fly, but now you're either going to be initiating combat, or you can try to improvise some more.)

Yuki and Liollmon

As the pair approach the flame in the distance, it becomes clear how tall it is, jutting impossibly out from a tree stump like an immobile jet engine. However, once they approach close enough, the truth becomes clear, as the flame begins to speak. "He told me you would come. If I burned it down, heralded the great one's arrival, you would be called to this world. A foe worthy of testing my rage."

He turns towards Yuki, revealing blue eyes that burn like coals, and a mouth covered in stitches that somehow resist the fires of the Digimon's body. "Greetings, Digidestined. I am Meramon, herald of the great destroyer. His teachings have harnessed my rage and made me strong. Now, before he awakens and we reduce this world to cinders, I would know your power."

(While you could probably try to extract some information from him first, a fight's looking pretty unavoidable here.)

Mika and Penguinmon

The boulder shatters as Ogremon and Penguinmon combine their strength. As the dust clears, Mika can see several other boulders landing in the forest all around her position, thrown, apparently, at random. A bellowing cry can be heard from the craggy hills, the voice likely belonging to Golemon. Wiping his brow, Ogremon suggests, ""Hey, we should probably start runnin', at least until we're close enough that we don't gotta worry about those rocks no more."

Kimiko and Floramon

Apemon looks confused as Kimiko relates her problem. "I am afraid I don't understand, I would be overjoyed to spend all my time talking about my art. Why would you not be pleased to have people interested in your work?"

Zak and Kunemon

As Zak recovers from his electrocution, Yanmamon begins flitting about angrily, building up another charge. While it's no longer moving at its previous breakneck speed, it remains extremely fast, remaining out of reach.

(It's now officially combat time. Yanmamon is presently targeting Zak, and will be until Kunemon can divert its attention. While Yanmamon can fly, Kunemon's Electro Thread is a ranged attack, so it can reach, fortunately.)

Teru and Salamon

Piddomon is momentarily staggered by Salamon's sudden attack, but recovers quickly, letting out an angry growl before thrusting his fist forward, unleashing a vortex of flames.

(You got a free attack in with your quick movement, but now Piddomon is targeting Salamon)

Yuki and Liollmon

As Meramon is raked by Liollmon's claws, he seems less bothered by it than one might expect. His voice hisses forth in indignation. "Is this all the power you can bring to bear?! The stories say the so-called 'Digidestined' can cause their partners to Digivolve as though it were nothing! Do you believe me so feeble that this mere... kitten could defeat me?! Show me the supposed 'power' of your partnership or I shall add your ashes to those of this forest!" As if to emphasize his point, Meramon unleashes a gout of flame behind himself, instantly consuming the charred remains of several trees.

Yuki and Liollmon

Meramon effortlessly steps out of the path of Liollmon's attack, though he ignores the Digimon to focus on Yuki. "The weak have no place in this world! Only those whose rage burns brightest may survive, and to them, the Great Destroyer grants power! Surely, you have seen it! His blessing seeks those whose fury is strong enough to gain His attention! But it seems I overestimated you, Digidestined, and your time to impress me has run out! Roaring Fire!"

Meramon extends a burning fist, and a gout of flame launches directly at Yuki.

(Meramon is attacking Yuki.)

Kimiko and Floramon

Apemon shrugs. "I suppose one would need to experience it to know what it's like. It seems we are nearing the beach. As a pacifist, I would only get in your way, but I would advise you to take care around Tortomon, for his shell is extremely hard. It will take either great force, or great finesse, to overcome his defenses."

Mika and Penguinmon

As Mika gets closer to the hills, it becomes clear what Ogremon meant. Golemon is only throwing boulders for distance, leaving the area near the foot of the hills completely clear. She can now see gaps in the ring of rock formations that make up Ogremon's home, and through them, movement is clearly visible. Ogremon whispers, "Okay, so, Golemon's pretty strong, you should probably do that 'Digivolution' thing Babamon was talkin' about."

Zak and Kunemon

As Zak collapses, Yanmamon rears back and lets out a buzzing roar, preparing to strike again.

(Yanmamon is wasting his turn being menacing this round.)

Teru and Salamon

As Teru declares her faith in her partner, her Digivice begins to glow. It's nothing like when Salamon first Digivolved, far brighter and more intense. And yet, its still feels restrained. The way Teru's Digivice is glowing looks almost pressurized, like there's infinitely more light, just waiting to be released at her command. Somehow, through this blinding glow, Teru can read two words on the simple LCD screen.

And then the bladed tip of Piddomon's staff slices over her head, knocking away most of her cover and revealing the snarling face of the angel Digimon.

Mika and Penguinmon

Golemon doesn't even seem to notice Mika and her partner as they rush toward him, and continues hurling boulders in his fury. A noticeable pit has formed behind him, as he gouges his ammunition straight out of the ground. It appears the Digidestined has the initiative. Ogremon creeps along behind her, and whispers, "Don't worry, I'll try to help you out."

(Ogremon's support provides +1 to your effective Power rating this combat.)

Kimiko and Floramon

As Apemon starts making his way back towards Jijimon's camp, a shape begins to rise out of the water in response to Kimiko's call. Sandstone-yellow and covered in spikes, Tortomon proves to be quite enormous, emerging from the sea with a spray of water. He opens his mouth wide and... yawns, before greeting Kimiko in a congenial drawl. "G'mornin'. What c'n I do ye fer? I was jus' havin' a li'l nap 'n, er, hey, Apemon, ever'thin' okay?"

Puzzled, Tortomon is looking at Apemon, who is suddenly standing stock still. No sooner had the artistic Digimon turned to leave, than a gout of water from Tortomon's entrance drenched him, and his notebook. As he stares, horrified, at the ruined sketches, a familiar black mist begins to gather around him. And then, he unleashes a mightly howl, pulling the club from his back, and wheeling about, preparing to attack.

(Apemon is presently about to attack Tortomon, you're not his targets quite yet.)

Kimiko and Floramon

Tortomon's beak hangs open in shock as Apemon leaps toward him, club raised. It impacts the Digimon's shell with an unsettling crack that causes the larger Digimon's legs to buckle, forcing him down into the foamy surf. Despite the ferocity of Apemon's assault, Tortomon's tone is more indignant than angry.

"Now, what in the Sam Hill'd ya do that fer?! I dunno what's gotten into ya, but if'n ye cain't be peaceable, I'm gonna hafta ask ya ta leave!"

Fortunately for Kimiko, it seems that Apemon is too focused on Tortomon to turn on her or her partner, but it's unlikely even Tortomon's shell can withstand Apemon's assault for long.

Teru and Darcmon

Piddomon raises his bladed staff to block Darcmon's strike, but La Pucelle effortlessly cleaves the shaft in twain, and sends Piddomon staggering backwards. The black fog thickens, and Piddomon releases a bestial growl before launching himself at his fellow holy Digimon, flame trailing as his fists become engulfed in heavenly fire.

(Back to our regularly scheduled fights! Piddomon's aiming for Darcmon, of course.)

Zak and Waspmon

Yanmamon darts to one side, but no amount of speed can escape the sheer size of a fully-charged Bear Buster. There's a horrible din as some of the forest's trees start collapsing, the midsections of their trunks having been unceremoniously vaporized. Amid the falling branches, Yanmamon still hovers, dodging the canopy as it crashes all around it. However, his movements are shaky and uncertain, like he may fall to the ground at any moment. Once more, lightning gathers between the dragonfly's wings, and it unleashes another blast of electricity.

(Yanmamon's finally aiming for Waspmon instead of Zak.)

Yuki and Leomon

As the attack collides with Meramon, the rictus grin returns to his face. "Finally, you reveal your true power! Now, let us see whose fury burns brighter! Heat Wave!" A great wall of fire rises at Meramon's feet and begins speeding toward Leomon.

Yuki and Leomon

Meramon is knocked back by the force of the blow, slamming into a nearby tree, causing the burned-out husk to crack and collapse, casting up a cloud of ash as the blackened trunk hits the forest floor. Still standing, Meramon laughs with delight. "Yes! This is what I've been waiting for! Human girl! What is your name? I wish to remember the identity of my worthy opponent." Without turning his attention from Yuki, he unleashes another fireball towards Leomon.

Teru and Darcmon

As Darcmon's blade leaves trails of light across Piddomon's body, the holy energy holds him, paralyzed. He convulses, as the shadowy fog covering his body begins to lose cohesion, and he cries out as it's blown away in a blinding flash of light.

"B-BEAUTIFUUUUUL!"

When the light fades, Piddomon has collapsed to the ground, unconscious, but alive. No trace of corruption remains.

Zak and Kunemon

The beam scorches Yanmamon's carapace, its evasive maneuvers proving to be of little use against the precision of a laser cannon. It changes tactics, rushing towards Waspmon, razor-sharp mandibles at the ready, prepared to strike at both Digimon and Digidestined.

(Since you're riding Waspmon, if he completely fails to block/dodge this attack, Zak will take damage, too.)

Kimiko and Floramon

As the rock impacts Apemon's skull, he wheels about, hooting angrily. He immediately rushes toward Kimiko, his bone club raised high and ready to strike.

(Kimiko is about to get a large dose of calcium, applied topically.)
