Weapons update. The more I read about this game the less I can believe it's even real, but everything so far has been verified by previews and official media. I guess this is what you get when you have unlimited money and effectively unlimited time to make a game. Next two weeks are going to be slow waiting.

I quite liked what they did with Michael but I found Franklin a bit dull. Trevor is interesting as a character written to have no dissonance between his actions in the cutscenes and when you take control and murder civilians for fun, but I think it ended up showing that's too one-note for a full game's story.

Also, I just thought the actual plot of 5 was meh and didn't really go anywhere. I really liked the writing in GTA 4, RDR and Bully (when's that getting a sequel?), so I have high hopes for RDR2.

Bully is casting for a sequel right now.

Here are a few things that I think are probably all true about this game.

(1) The underlying gameplay tools or mechanisms Rockstar is using probably aren't all that new or revolutionary. NPCs remembering what you've done isn't new. People reacting to things you've done in the past isn't that hard to set up, fundamentally.
(2) It probably contains a whole lot of events that aren't "technically" scripted because they're "technically" the result of emergent behavior. But this emergent behavior is probably something that's been set up to happen in a very similar way pretty often, leading reviewers to have similar experiences
(3) There are probably a lot of scripted events on top of #2. Seeing these things happen a second and third time will probably be around the time when you realize this is actually just a normal video game.
(4) But also, at the end of the day, I've believed for a long time like a lot of these open world games were getting very close to something that felt real in a "new" way. By that I mean, I'm not convinced that the thing keeping a lot of these open world games from feeling real is technology or gameplay mechanisms.

For example, minecraft often feels a lot more like an actual place to me than a lot of the locations in Horizon: Zero Dawn (which I loved). I'm not entirely sure why that is, and it's a weird thing to say I realize. I think it's at least somewhat because the world of minecraft interacts with itself in some basic but interesting and internally consistent ways. In H:ZD the world itself is just flat level geometry (although it is loving beautiful). But my point is that, at least for me, the "immersion" or realness or whatever seems to be a product of systems interacting with each other in believable ways.

If I'm understanding what I've been hearing correctly, that's what it seems like Rockstar is going for. They've created a bunch of systems that on their own don't sound very interesting. I think the magic is going to come out of how they interact with each other. I think most studios focus on making individual systems impressive, because those are the bullet points that get mentioned on the box or in reviews. Seeing how hard some people have found it to express why RDR2 was impressive, I get it. Focusing on the intersection of systems is probably a hard case to make in a board room, or anywhere really.

Regardless, after 20-30 hours, and the third time we hear the same distinct line of dialogue, the spell will be broken and we'll be forced to reconcile with our miserable non-cowboy lives. But at least for the reasons above I think it's possible Rockstar really is doing something "new" with this game.

Also this is the song that will play on the menu screen supposedly: https://streamable.com/qpx8f

That’s more likely PS4 theme music for the media xbar menu, not the game itself. Great write up btw

This video I saved from the golden age of PS4 Goon GTAO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T97LeXNaMpU epitomizes for me the essence of GTAO which was basically just hangin out.

I got back into it again recently and I'll admit the only reason I'm able to do so solo (as most of the crew has moved on to other games) is because of the base of assets I built up doing heists with fellow PS4 goons 2 years ago or so. When I got a bonus at work I used shark cards to buy a yacht, but overall I don't think I've spent more than $100-150 on them over the 2-3 years I've played it cumulatively now. (and I bought the base game for $30 from Target in like 2014.)

This one's also a classic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5D7q7hXmmIE

As part of my hype-building week I watched the Hateful Eight on Netflix yesterday. I had no idea the whole 3-hour movie takes place on effectively one set, but it was still so good. I love it when an overlong movie still manages to melt the time away because it's so good. Lots of talking and detective work but still extremely suspenseful since you don't know who's gonna get bloodily blown away next.

I also asked my dad, who is huge into our genealogy, what our ancestors were doing in America around the 1890s.
Dad's dad's dad's dad was a Lutheran pastor named Heinrich Schulz and eventually became president of the Minnesota district for the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Here is a photo of him in his 20s, which should've been around that time:

Apparently he once had to escape an anti-German mob on horseback. He started going by Henry around this time. He eventually retired in the late 19-teens and his congregation bought him a Model-T as a retirement present.

Dad's mom's dad's dad was named Odin Mathison and came to northwestern Wisconsin from Norway around the 1890s. In this era he began clearing the land for the farm my grandma (Odin's granddaughter) would grow up on. They were not fluent in English at all, but neither was anyone else in the area. Woodeville Wisconsin still has Syttende Mai (17th of May) celebrations to this day.

Upper midwest was not so wild at that time I guess. Really hoping to see what they do with the lusher areas that look more Midwesterny.

My dad is also a huge train guy (he's a Lutheran pastor too but quit his job from 2000-2002 to work for a model train magazine) so I asked him about that leaked clip of the train robbery, specifically the accuracy of its portrayal with the engineer and tender at the end: "Pretty realistic, except that was probably the brakeman (not engineer) who sat in that "doghouse" on the back of the tender until it was time to manually set the brakes. The so-called 'dog house' is where the brakeman sat to guard the watch of the train. It was heated by a steam radiator from the locomotive."

bear pelts come from grizzly bears, and they roam the west grizzlies. Probably the East Grizzlies as well, but I usually just run into wolves over there. Black Bears give you Black Bear pelts, and they're primarily in the Black Bone Forest area. They run from you (only large predator that avoids conflict with you as far as I've seen). Wolves spawn in all of these locations as well, and Cougars can spawn in the southern part of the Black Bone Forest area as well, so hunting Black Bears can take some luck (luckily I think you only need two perfect Black Bear Pelts for the clothes). Getting Grizzlies with perfect pelts is a bitch, though... the game says a rifle with express rounds, but that will lower pelt quality. Bow with Poison Arrows then following the thing until it dies is the only way it seems to not lose quality, and they definitely don't shy from a fight. Don't use horses to hunt them, they'll make even the bravest warhorse dump you on your butt when they charge as well.

I once saw a cougar attack a black bear in the west grizzlies. Thankfully I was on an abandoned cabin’s porch so it couldn’t get to me right away since he turned to me immediately after killing the bear. It all happened in like 4 seconds.

The cougar had a 2-star pelt. The dead black bear pelt was poor, which makes sense given that it died to claws/jaws.

This is exactly the type of thing that makes RDO so fun. I haven't had experiences exactly like this yet but I have pointed shotguns at people to get them to keep moving, and when it works it's beautiful. I was in a 4-man posse and 2 of us got separated in the dark woods from the rest of them and we found a small campfire (not someone's full camp) we could craft at. A pubbie started to come down the path on his horse pretty slowly, and the campfire was elevated from the path. So I pointed my shotgun at him the entire time he passed while the other posse friend rested at the campfire. After he was far enough away i joined him at the campfire. Not exciting to write out, but exactly the type of PvP experience I'm looking for in RDO.

The whole point of RDO and GTAO is the cat-and-mouse experience. But GTAO eventually got private servers so I'm sure it's forthcoming. Just not soon.

I'm imagining doing online stranger missions in a private server and thinking how little payoff there is for taking on the AI enemies in them. Most of the wagon train escort missions only have like two scripted spots for AI enemies--it's almost like they want humans to pick up the slack. Though i guess if you don't need that much risk to feel rewarded (which merits the giant pussies comment), then private servers would be better for you.

I honestly hope it never comes because of the redundancy in function vis-a-vis the cripps camp. And also how it's antithetical to the game: GTA's vain consumerism vs. RDR's quaint frontiersmanship. Oh man I had so much fun doing a bounty last night that had nothing to do with the bounty. It was just a single $ one, but I started it in Annesburg and the little four-note theme starts playing right away and continuously once you start it (kinda reminds me of that bass line motif from Inglourious Basterds), even though the target was way out west in the Grizzlies. So I’m trotting along up the hill where the miners are and must’ve brushed past a NPC security guard while in the quick menu because he said—and I quote—“I could blow you away and the law wouldn’t give a drat!!” So I looked backwards while still riding straight and waited to see if he would fire first. He actually did and I popped him simultaneously in the head, got off my horse and took cover behind some crates because like a dozen more guys started coming up the hill. All the while this bounty music still playing and I’m blowing these guys away with the double barreled shotgun as they yell poo poo like “You do know yr gonna die, right?” When the coast was clear I got back on my horse (Appaloosa 4 lyfe) and got on my way to the bounty. It felt so cool.
