People complain about the lack of passive mode, but lassoing and roadhauling a random person through town who is asking you politely to please stop while your friends all shoot their guns in the air and then fistfighting them is very fun and cowboy-y

The online gamemodes are fun but I wish there was a way to choose the gamemode or number of teams. In a playlist of 16 people there should not be 8 teams and one of those teams shouldn't have 4 people while every other team is someone solo or a pair

But people play online for months or years. Single player campaign people only play for a few weeks. They need to give players incentive to keep playing and keep the size of the player base healthy. As long as there's no items that can only be purchased with real money that give players a gameplay advantage, I think it won't so bad. Plus they're probably going to tweak the economy. It makes more sense to start low and increase payout as needed, instead of starting too high and decreasing it.

I think you can buy guns early with gold and yoou can take your personal guns into almost every competitive gamemode. I know that having an early ultimate edition pump action is loving broken

If you put your bandana on you get to keep it on during online story mission cutscenes and you get special colored facemasks and poo poo when doing the competitive modes, it's pretty cool.

I like the deathmatch modes and wish there was a way to choose to only play most wanted or team shootout. Also the double action revolver can't pull off instant headshots like the cattleman cause of its lovely accuracy, but because being shot at fucks your auto-aim up you can just run up to dudes and instantly unload your entire cylinder at them in the time it takes them to even get their reticle over your character it's v. fun.

I was searching for treasure chests in the bayou in RDO and was so scared of crocodiles I just kept blasting my shotgun into the water. I accidentally shot a bunch of fish, and could pick up their carcasses. So this made me wonder if dynamite fishing is a thing and if anyone's tried it

The varmint rifle is incredibly good because it has the highest accuracystat of all the beginner guns, and most guns I think. Only the bolt action is more accurate but it's also extremely slow and holds 5 bullets. Accuracy is the most important stat in pvp currently because it determines how quickly your aim cone gets smaller, which is important for instant headshots

maybe i just have too high expectations for the writing in AAA games. but my god the characters were so dull in this one.

I think the writing in RDR1 is A LOT stronger. This game's story gets very meandering, which I think is because of them trying to make it a more immersive sim experience which I think it does very well, but I feel the writing suffers because of it.

I played low honor on my first run and it didnt really seem that incongruous. I mostly just lowered my honor by robbing trains and stuff though, and the subtle differences in dialogue and stuff are cool imo. A lot of the changed dialogue makes it clear that Arthur knows the world is changing, and is happy to help people who can still fit into the new world, but will go out as an outlaw and killer as some sort of atavistic rebellion to modernism, and in a way renounces Dutch in that he recognizes that he cant accept that his place in the world is gone

I think Red Dead 2 is interesting in that each of its 3 acts seems to mirror a specific sub-genre of Western. Where the beginning with Bill and Bonnie is very classic John Wayne stuff, where Mexico is a lot like.... well the Wild Bunch or Duck You Sucker in that you're brought to Mexico for personal reasons and get wrapped up in the revolution and interact with corrupt generals and revolutionaries. And finally Act 3 shares a lot of themes with Red Dead 2 in that it's like, a deconstruction of what the West was and Ross goes on huge philosophical debates. It being centered around Blackwater also makes the encroachment of urban, industrial life onto the West very apparent. Red Dead 2 is stronger as a narrative imo, and Red Dead 1 really feels like an ode to the Western as a genre and takes you through rhe developmental history of Weaterns in the course of the game which I thought was really cool.

I think the game's critique of Dutch isnt that he fought against the government and oppression and that doing so was fruitless, but that a large reason that he did so was motivated out of self-aggrandizement. I think Dutch is supposed to be presented as a figure that almost preys on disenfranchised and victimized groups, and uses them and their struggle to act sorta like a white savior. I think that's a large motivating factor in his interactions with Eagle Flies' son and he's sorta a gross figure. I dont think that R* is necessarily saying that all struggle against imperialism and capitalism is fruitless, and I think Hercule in part 5 is supposed to be a figure that highlights how Dutch isnt really invested in fighting against those systems, which is interesting because Hercule is almost like a perfect revolutionary figure and it creates a juxtaposition with Dutch at his lowest and evilest. I think that one of the largest points of the game is that for all his bluster, Dutch isnt much better than the system he's fighting against, he kills, murders, and steals and replicates the most predatory part of the banking system, but with a hired killer on call basically. Sorry if this is sorta rambly lol.

I dont think Dutch is a cackling villain but he is like, a very manipulative person. He murders an old lady in chapter 5 and then straight up lies to Arthur about knowing Spanish to justify it. I dont think he's actively trying to present himself as a good person, but believes he is, and while doing good, also compromises his morals. Dutch isnt like a weirdo egoist, he's just sort of a selfish hypocrite. Like he shoots down Bill being racist towards Native Americans but his grand escape plan to escape the domination of the modern world is to use a bunch of money he stole from poor people to become a colonizer in the Pacific. I forget if this dialogue exists, but doesnt Dutch sorta explicitly say he's helping the Wapiti to raise a bunch of heat around them to get Cornwall off of his back? I dont think his actions at the end of the game are especially noble either. His reaction to seeing some dude murder someone he thought of like a son is basically, "Oh well...." And leaving John the money sorta fucks him over since Ross tracks him down.

What I think is interesting is that the enemy gangs are all people who are also victimized by the modern, changing world like Dutch's gang. Except that for most of them, like the Lemoyne Raiders, it is just an unambiguously good thing that their ways of life are no longer possible.

The Lemoyne Raiders suffers from some time inconsistencies a bit. Most enlisted men fighting in the war would've been 17-20 years of age in 1865. This game should have them all as fairly old men already.

I think Red Dead 2 is almost a tragedy because in my opinion it takes place after Dutch has already lost the struggle against the modern world. Like, by the time of the game the West is basically dead, and the gang keeps taking L's because theyve already lost the grand struggle against modernity. I think that part of the reason that Dutch is so lost, because he was shaped by a world that no longer exists and has to how to adapt. I know I harp on this a lot but imo that's why the Guarma chapter is so interesting to me, because it's like the one unequivocal victory the gang has and it's helping in a socialist insurrection. I think it's supposed to show that the nature of the fight against the repressive system that figures like Cornwall and Fussar represent has fundamentally changed, and Dutch's gang is basically a relic of a bygone era.
