I'm in Chapter 2 and just finished the satchel!

It didn't take too long but I threw all hunting conventions out the window and just rode around one shotting the 3 star animals I needed with improved arrow/varmint rifle from the back of my horse as they ran away. Seemed like the most efficient way especially if you get the Legendary Buck trinket and tame the white Arabian horse first.

I tried to find panthers for about an hour yesterday, Southwest of Braithwaite and east of Lagras. I did find the last Killer Clue and I think I managed to get sexually assaulted Pulp Fiction style by a redneck swamp person though so at least I have that going for me.

I tried waiting until night, I tried using cover scent,I tried leaving boar carcasses out, I tried using predator bait. This sucks.

The panther never spawned for me in the east of Lagras location, but as soon as I tried Old Harry Fen (that forest area southeast of Braithwaite) and ran zig zags through it with my horse, I saw the red dot pop up on the minimap so quickly auto-aimed my bow at the creature and skewered it with an improved arrow. Perfect Panther pelt. :D

I recommend also saving before you enter the forest so that if you find it and you don't get a perfect pelt, reload the save and it may spawn as pristine next time around. Saves alot of time.

Are "complete" entries required for 100% or for any other bonus? I have a couple legendaries that somehow committed suicide so I have their compendium entries but I'll never actually get to kill one.

You need to kill 5 legendary animals for the 100% completion achievement (you can see the 100% checklist in the menu). But legendary animal kills aren't needed for anything else as far as I know (not even for the study & skin all animals achievements). They just provide materials for useful trinkets & cosmetic clothes.

I assume since the animals died they are now crossed out on your map? In which case I also assume you got credit for it in the checklist.

Nice. The one I got was standing completely still out in the open NW of Strawberry. I think it was drinking from the stream running alongside the road. They definitely aren't as elusive as the panther.

It isn't really dynamic or anything, the main story goes the way it goes regardless of what you do. The ending has slight flavor differences based on what end of the honor scale you are at I think, and then you do get to make one significant mission choice in that chapter.
Otherwise you occasionally get to choose stuff like "throw dynamite at them" vs. "sneak up and shove a knife up their spine" which has no real story implications.

Some of the 'vision' cutscenes have different animals too. At the end of one mission if you're high honour you see an elk but if you're low honour then you see a wolf instead or something.

It's not a bad idea to zip through the missions until you unlock everything. Hunting requests and the Exotics quests are ones that come to mind since those are things you can keep an eye out for while doing other stuff (finding dinosaur bones, cave paintings etc).

But I wouldn't start Exotics until you have Herbalism 9 (find all plants) in progress, otherwise you'll end up having to find the exotics all over again since they don't count retroactively.

Cutscenes apparently count, so a lot of them are meant to be played again. I was wondering why so many missions felt like they had insanely short time limits

You'd think that but they don't! Time stands still during cutscenes but doesn't slow down when using deadeye, so sometimes you'll fail that objective if you spam deadeye too much. There are atleast 2 missions where skipping a cutscene breaks the time requirement but otherwise skipping them is fine.

Also if you die or fail in a mission then that often causes time, headshots and accuracy objectives to automatically fail. Meaning you have to restart the mission from the start.

Anti-Hero posted:

Yeah, that sucks.

Yeah I really hope Rockstar patch that. A lot of the objectives are virtually impossible using stock gear which is why you're better off going for gold medals as you play through the game, or just starting a new save and getting them that way.

Has anyone done the full Algernon Wasp mission (Duchesses and other animals) before the epilogue? From reading online, there's sometimes a bug where the orchids don't appear, but I also see people saying that some of the exotics - specifically the lady slipper orchid at the lumber camp site don't appear until the epilogue. The online videos appear to always hit that one, so I was trying to figure out if I truly had to wait on this one or if my game has a bug.

I completed it fine in chapter 6, but there are some confusing quirks that people think are bugs when they really aren't.

For starters, the orchids don't appear at all until you have activated the quest and secondly if you collect orchids in advance before you're up to the part of the quest that requires them then the game will limit you so that there's 1 left (e.g. if you need 10 you'll be stuck at 9/10). This limit makes those orchids "disappear" from the game temporarily until you're up to that part of the quest. Then you just need to collect the 10th one and you're done.

Also, if you're going for 100% then also make sure you have Herbalism 9 (collect all herbs) active before starting the quest so you don't have to waste time later collecting them all again later. ;)

If you hate the 3 star animal system like I do then you can also save-scum to keep the pelt on your horse and load it if you die.

You can also save/load when encountering a 1 star animal to respawn it as a 3 star animal and in some cases save/loading can even make an animal respawn as a different variation (like, turn a Panther into a Florida Panther). Useful if you want to complete the compendium or get those study & skin every animal achievements/trophies. ;)

Later with John I went up there and I was able to open the door and the Professor was dead. John says "Oh Professor..." like he's sad or some poo poo.
