and then the car turned in to fire

HOME OF RONALDO and also the Autogrill

Last year was good. Napoli took an extra long time to poo poo themselves and we had a 1 on 1 for the Champions League final spot between Lazio and Inter where Stefan De Vrij, who was playing for Lazio at the time, suspiciously played against Inter, who he is playing for now and didn’t actively try to lose but we all know what went down there. Roma were good until they were bad, Lazio were real good until the last day and Milan were insanely bad the whole time despite spending nearly 2.5 Pogba’s in the transfer window. Our good friends Parma are back as well as Empoli and We All Hate Frosinone who shameful shamed their way to a shameful victory over good lads Palermo in a shameful playoff final that everyone should be ashamed of. Vergogna.

Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio
Home City Bergamo
Manager: Giampiero Gasperini
Notable players in: Duvan Zapata (striker, Samp), Mario Pasalic (midfielder, Chelsea)
Notable players out: Andrea Petagna (striker, SPAL), Bryan Cristante (midfielder, Roma), Mattia Caldara (defender, Milan via Juve)
Trophies: Coppa Italia [1] 62/63
Last finish: 7th

Atalanta managed to finish only one place below the previous season and did so without Andrea Conti and Frank Kessie, who were mainstays of their starting lineup. They qualified for the early stages of the Europa League and have already notched a couple of wins, moving them closer to the group stages. Gasperini went on record as saying he wasn’t too thrilled about the transfers this year and that he doesn’t think that the team will be able to compete on all fronts. He’s probably right as he’s lost two of his best defenders (Spinazzola and Caldara) and one of this best strikers (Petagna). Zapata is good, but the backline will have a lot of work to do.

Bologna Football Club 1909
Home City Bologna
Manager: Pippo motherfuckin Inzaghi get the gently caress in
Notable players in: Lukasz Skorupski (goalkeeper, Roma), Diego Falcinelli (striker, Sassuolo)
Notable players out: Antonio Mirante (goalkeeper, Roma), Simone Verdi (striker, Napoli)
Trophies: Serie A [7] 24/25, 28/29, 35/36, 36/37, 38/39, 40/41, 63/64
Coppa Italia [2] 69/70, 73/74
Last finish: 15th in Serie A

Bologna were poo poo. They weren’t quite as poo poo as the season before but the teams were slightly better this year so they still managed to avoid relegation. Donadoni was promptly canned at the end of the season to be replaced by none other than Filippo Inzaghi, who went on a brilliant run in Serie B only to lose out in the playoffs. An interesting note will be when the Inzaghi brothers face off this season, if both of them last that long anyway. Falcinelli and Skorupski aren’t really upgrades to Verdi and Mirante, in fact I would say they’re both worse, but Inzaghi made a bunch of really bad players look decent at Venezia. Once again avoiding relegation will be a target.

Cagliari Calcio
Home City Cagliari
Manager: Rolando Maran
Notable players in: Darijo Srna (defender, Shakhtar, he’s still alive!
Notable players out: Leandro Castan (defender, Roma, end loan)
Trophies: Serie A 69/70
Last finish: 16th in Serie A

Cagliari were in the drop for most of the season and they were playing some real poo poo football but Diego Lopez led them to a string of decent results at the end that ultimately (barely) placed them above SPAL and Crotone to seal safety with I think 1 day to spare. Lopez was replaced by poo poo team stalwart Rolando Maran who will have fight on his hands to keep this team up. Srna will provide some leadership but the team needs goals. I expect them to finish a little higher but not much.

Associazione Calcio Chievo Verona
Home City Verona
Manager: Lorenzo D’Anna
Notable players in: Emmanuele Giaccherini (midfielder, Napoli buyback), Joel Obi (midfielder, Torino)
Notable players out: Roberto Inglese (striker, Parma via Napoli), Lucas Castro (midfielder, Cagliari)
Trophies: none at the top level
Last finish: 13th

Chievo cheated the government, the Italian people, and the “people” of Verona out of a ton of tax money by overstating the value of players sold between them and Cesena (who are now bankrupt) by several orders of magnitude. They have successfully appealed to the courts and have gotten through the first round of appeals via a technicality regarding the timing of the investigations. There’s a chance they will get hit with a points penalty but I imagine they’ll poo poo their way to 17th or something just barely. They are unkillable.

Empoli Football Club SpA
Home City Empoli
Manager: Aurelio Andreazzoli
Notable players in: Luca Antonelli (defender, Milan), Matias Silvestre (defender, Sampdoria)
Notable players out: Gabriel (goalkeeper, Milan)
Trophies: None at the top level
Last finish: 1st in Serie B

Empoli won a tightly contested Serie B season and they will continue with manager Aurelio Andreazzoli. You may remember Levan Mchedlidze from the last time Empoli were around, he’s still with the club. I don’t think they’re going to stay up but Empoli are a perennial division dancer so if they do manage to get relegated they might bounce right back up.

Associazione Calcio Firenze Fiorentina
Home City Firenze
Manager: Stefano Pioli
Notable players in: Marko Pjaca (midfielder, Juve), Kevin Mirallas (striker, Everton)
Notable players out: Carlos Sanchez (midfielder, West Ham)
Trophies: Serie A [2] 55/56, 68/69
Coppa Italia [6] 39/40, 60/61, 65/66, 74/75, 95/96, 00/01
Cup Winners Cup [1] 60/61
Last finish: 8th

Fiorentina were unlucky in the end of the season to be beaten out by Atalanta for the final Europa League spots. It had been a three way race between Milan, them and Atalanta, but some key fuckups in the head to heads really broke them. Possibly the most important thing Fiorentina have done in the offseason is to keep Chiesa and Simeone in the team, as the two of them are really quite good and another year together will not only be good for Fiorentina, but the players as well. Pjaca is a good signing, and he might be the extra bit they need to be closer to the top four. I don’t think they’ll break it, but Europa League is certainly attainable.

Frosinone Calcio S.r.l.
Home City Frosinone
Manager: Moreno Longo
Notable players in: Marco Sportiello (goalkeeper, Atalanta) Emil Hallfredsson (midfielder, Udinese)
Notable players out: none
Trophies: Serie A 84/85
Last finish: Serie B frauds playoff finals for frauds

Frosinone should not be here, and this is why:
https://twitter.com/delinquentweet/status/1008084687510736897

Some of the players received personal fines and the team as a whole did as well, but that playoff final result should not have stood, or, at the very least, a points penalty should have been assigned. The good news is that they’re poo poo so I expect them to get hammered back in to B in short order.

Genoa Cricket and Football Club
Home City Genova
Manager: Davide Ballardini
Notable players in: Domenico Criscito (defender, Zenit), Romulo (defender, Hellas), Giuseppe Favilli (striker, Juve), Krzysztof Piatek (stirker, Cracovia, this guy scored four goals in his first real match for the club in the Coppa Italia)
Notable players out: Mattia Perin (goalkeeper, Juve), Diego Laxalt (midfielder, Milan)
Trophies: Serie A [9] 1897/98; 1898/99; 1899/1900; 1901/02; 1902/03; 1903/04; 1914/15; 1922/34 1923/24
Coppa Italia [1] 36/37
Last finish: 12th

Genoa finished a comfortable 12th last year despite losing Mattia Perin for most of the season. Return of club “legend”, Domenico Criscito will go a long way to boosting attendance if nothing else. As usual the transfer market for Genoa is incredibly full of players you’ve never heard of going and coming to and from places you didn’t know existed. Fallen star Marchetti from Lazio is probably going to start in goal and if it’s anything like past season she’ll have plenty to do. I think mid table is expected, probably achieveable.

Football Club Internazionale Milano
Home City Milano

European Cup/Champions League [3] 63/64, 64/65, 09/10
UEFA Cup/Europa League [3] 90/91, 93/94, 97/98
Last finish: 4th

Inter have had an insanely good transfer market after sealing their first Champions League place in many seasons. It came down to a final match day head to head match against Lazio in order to determine the CL places and Inter played well enough to seal it, looking good while doing so. Icardi was co-capocannoniere with Ciro Immobile and there are no signs he’s slowing down. Inter are scary good on paper and will say that the title is the goal, but I still think that they are no match for Juve and will at best finish second.

Cup Winners Cup [1] 83/84
UEFA Cup/Europa League [3] 76/77, 89/90, 92/93
Last finish: 1st

What a big fuckin surprise. The only weird thing Juve did this year was to buy Bonucci back from Milan by way of selling Higuain and Caldara to them. Higuain they can do without, but Bonucci will need replacing in a few years along, let alone the rest of the defense. I still think they win everything. They signed Ronaldo for fucks sake. They’ll probably win the loving Champions League too. Buffon leaving is just an afterthought, that’s how much of an impact Ronaldo has had already.

Societa Sportiva Lazio

Cup Winners Cup [1] 99/98
Last finish: 5th

Lazio only need Ciro Immobile and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to be on form and they are all set. They haven’t really signed anyone of note, but as long as they keep SMS they should be ok for the start of the season. A real heartbreaker (for them anyway) of a loss on the last day gave Inter a champions league spot at Lazio’s expense. I think the rivalry between them and Roma will be even more relevant than usual this year as Roma have weakened in my opinion, while Lazio will only get better. A champions league spot will be the goal if Lotito doesn’t lose his poo poo on deadline day.

Associazione Calcio Milan

Cup Winners Cup [2] 67/68, 72/73
Last finish: 6th

Milan had a decent season except that they spent 250 million euros to have a “decent” season so it was really a disaster. Turns out the Chinese guys that nobody knew anything about were just some bums borrowing a lot of non existant money, who would’ve thought? The team is now owned by an American hedge fund, but they have brought back the one and only Paolo Maldini in to the organization which has fostered a lot of good will among the fan base. Signing Higuain and Caldara has been seen as pulling one over on Juve, but without a midfield there are still a lot of holes in this team. Champions league qualification will be a goal but it’ll be a hard fight. Gattuso might not last the season.

Oh yeah remember the time Benevento scored their first ever point in Serie A when their second goalkeeper scored on the last kick of a game from a corner? Yeah. Milan.

Societa Sportiva Calcio Napoli
Home City Napoli
Manager: Carlo Ancelotti
Notable players in: Alex Meret (goalkeeper, Udinese via SPAL), Simone Verdi (striker, Bologna)
Notable players out: Pepe Reina (goalkeeper, Milan), Jorginho (midfielder, Chelsea)
Trophies: Serie A [2] 86/86, 89/90
Coppa Italia [4] 61/62, 75/76, 86/87, 11/12, 13/14
UEFA Cup/Europa Leage [1] 88/89
Last finish: 2nd

Maurizio Sarri was brought to Chelsea with crime money and was replaced by Mr. Eyebrow himself, Carlo Ancelotti. The transfer market has been kind of poo poo, though, and Napoli’s preseason has been a total disaster. Despite only dropping the ball by 4 points last season, Napoli haven’t strengthened enough relative to Inter and Juventus and Ancelotti has been playing on easy mode at RM and Bayern so I expect this to be a relatively tough season. Losing Reina, and having Meret immediately injuring himself leaves only Karnezis as a starting goalkeeper which doesn’t really inspire confidence.

Parma Calcio 1913 S.r.l.
Home City Parma
Manager: Roberto D’Aversa
Notable players in: Jonathan Biabiany (midfielder, Inter), Roberto Inglese (striker, Napoli)
Notable players out: Alessandro Lucarelli (defender, retired)
Trophies: Coppa Italia [3] 91/92, 98/99, 01/02
UEFA Cup [2] 94/95, 98/99
Cup Winners Cup 92/93
Last finish: 2nd in Serie B

Parma avoided a playoff appearance in Serie B and secured direct promotion to A, sealing their return to greatness after falling apart just 4 (5?) years ago and having the entire club including their trophies put up for auction. Alessandro Lucarelli finally retired, having achieved his goal of bringing the team back to the top. Out of the promoted teams, Parma has had the best market in my opinion and will have the best chance of staying up. As usual for promoted teams, it’ll be a fight to do just that, but I feel they can pull it off.

Associazione Sportiva Roma
Home City Roma
Manager: Eusebio Di Francesco
Notable players in: Javier Pastore (midfielder, PSG), Antoino Mirante (goalkeeper, Roma), Bryan Cristante (midfielder, Atalanta), Steven N’Zonzi (midfielder, Sevilla)
Notable players out: Radja Nainggolan (midfielder, Inter), Bruno Peres (defender, Sao Paolo), Gregoire Defrel (striker, Sampdoria), Lukasz Skorupski (goalkeeper, Bologna)
Trophies: Serie A [3] 41/42, 82/83, 00/01
Coppa Italia [9] 63/64, 68/69, 79/80, 80/81, 83/84, 85/86, 90/91, 06/07, 07/08
Last finish: 3rd

Roma started quite well but fell apart shortly after Christmas and couldn’t maintain pace with Napoli and Juve. It was always going to be them in 3rd though, so I think there was little motivation to keep up. Di Francesco has proved himself to be pretty decent so there is some hope to be had to at least maintain the CL placing. Losing Nainggolan is a bigger deal than they think, in my opinion, and I bet that Pastore will come back from France forgetting that the opposition is actually decent most of the time here. I think it’ll be a fight with Inter, Napoli and Lazio again for the CL spots, but they shouldn’t have too many problems if Di Francesco can sort out the midfield.

Unione Calcio Sampdoria
Home City Genova
Manager: Marco Giampoalo
Notable players in: Gregoire Defrel (striker, Roma), Jakub Jankto (midfielder, Udinese)
Notable players out: Emiliano Viviano (goalkeeper, Sporting), Duvan Zapata (striker, Atalanta), Ivan Strinic (defender, Milan), Lucas Torreira (midfielder, Arsenal)
Trophies: Serie A [1] 90/91
Coppa Italia [4] 84/85, 87/88, 88/89, 93/94
Cup Winners Cup [1] 89/90
Last finish: 10th

An exact middle finish is about right for Samp. Lucas Torreira was a bit of a revelation this past season and Samp didn’t have much of a chance to hang on to him, so they will be hoping that the midfield can keep up. Losing Zapata is probably the bigger damage to them, in my opinion, Defrel is not the same type of striker and Giampaolo will have to adjust his system accordingly.

Unione Sportivo Sassuolo Calcio
Home City Sassuolo
Manager: Roberto De Zerbi
Notable players in: Khouma Babacar (striker, Fiorentina), Kevin Prince Boa-Boa-Boa-Teng-Teng-Teng! (midfielder, Eintracht Frankfurt)
Notable players out: Matteo Politano (striker, Inter), Deigo Falcinelli (striker, Bologna), Francesco Acerbi (defender, Lazio)
Trophies: None at the top level
Last finish: 11th

Berardi is never going to get sold and Sassuolo are starting to show their age. Not enough was done after Di Francesco left, though the management is at least trying something with Roberto De Zerbi. I don’t expect them to get out of mid table. They were not very good last season and will likely just continue to frustrate Milan twice a season. Boateng is a fun signing and I hope he does well but he can’t do it alone.

Società Polisportiva Ars et Labor 2013
Home City Ferrara
Manager: Leonardo Semplici
Notable players in: Andrea Petagna (striker, Atalanta)
Notable players out: Alex Meret (goalkeeper, Napoli via Udinese), Marco Borriello (striker, not picked up yet)
Trophies: None at the top level
Last finish: 17th

SPAL deservedly managed to stay up last year, going down to the last few days in a real fight with Cagliar, Crotone and Bologna. They haven’t been too busy in the market over the summer and will have a tough time staying up again as Parma are probably slightly better placed than they are. The fanbase is strong and enthusiasm remained high all season so it’ll be a loud fight on the way down if nothing else.

Torino Football Club
Home City Torino
Manager: Walter Mazzarri
Notable players in: none
Notable players out: Joel Obi (midfielder, Chievo)
Trophies: Serie A [7] 27/28, 42/43, 45/46, 46/47, 47/48, 48/49, 75/76
Coppa Italia [5] 35/36, 42/43, 67/68, 70/71, 92/93
Last finish: 9th

Belotti being injured for the majority of the season really seemed to break Torino. Mihajlovic got sacked after a terrible run and replaced with Mazzarri who wasn’t able to get Torino in to Europe but dragged them out of the bottom half of the table. Most of Torino’s business has been to buy players they had on loan (Niang, Rincon, etc), but no big additions have been made. Bit of a toss up as to what will happen.

Udinese Calcio
Home City Udine
Manager: Julio Velazquez
Notable players in: Rolando Mandragora (midfielder, Juve)
Notable players out: Alex Meret (goalkeeper, Napoli via SPAL), Emil Hallfredsson (midfielder, Frosinone), Jakub Jankto (midfielder, Samp)
Trophies: None at the top level
Last finish: 14th

Udinese were bad and should have done worse. They’re finally paying the price for being Genoa+ and never buying anyone of note and selling anyone that’s any good. The Pozzo’s seem more focused on Watford because that’s where the money is, which you can’t really blame them for. Udinese are probably in for relegation fight.

Fuckin lmao Cagliari is the southernmost team

Where can I watch?

In America
This poo poo is on ESPN+ now. They promise to show one or two games a week on TV but I wouldn’t hold my breath for anything more than Juve games.

RAI Italia carries a game in each time slot (lunch time, 1500 and 2045) on each game day, but the quality of the broadcast is really bad and also it’s in Italian!

There’s also supposedly a streaming service called Serie A pass for countries that don’t have an agreement with the company that holds the rights. I signed up for emails but havne’t heard anything since.

In the UK
In the UK, Eleven Sports has the rights to Serie A. Right now, they are a stream only through their website and app, but supposedly they are trying to get TV channels. Also, they will be airing some matches on Facebook.

Anywhere else
That subreddit with the football streams has every game, usually in English and HD.

What should I read?

La Gazzetta Dello Sport: Italian sports daily with an English language site that’s been getting better over the years. Most of their news is reliable, if a little later than twitter.

Football Italia: A English language site covering Italian football that updates constantly. Good English language coverage; the writers have started to show their allegiances over the years.

transfermarkt.it: A gigantic real life transfer database, the .it version is in Italian and covers Serie A on the first page, but if you go to the bottom there's a .co.uk version that's in English.

Who should I follow on twitter/facebook
The league itself actually has a very good social media presence, and they post all the time. They post a lot of good pictures and announce important things pretty quickly.

Tancredi Palmeri is a multilingual journalist who is mostly worth following during the transfer season for entertainment only; he’s mostly full of poo poo but every now and then he tells a good story about a player or a manager and such.

Gianluca Di Marzio is another good journalist who’s more serious than Palmeri and also has an English section on his website. He’s usually pretty reliable.

OptaPaolo for stat dorks

Calciatori Brutti, literally “ugly footballers”, is a pretty funny account that tweets a lot of humorous Italian sports things, usually about football. Every now and then they’re serious too. A good twitter account.

Italian football TV English language guys that have a podcast but also post a lot and generally are funny. Good for media like videos, pictures etc.

Roma’s English language account is really good even if you’re not a Roma fan. They’re what everyone else’s social media team wants to be.

What to post about in this thread
Serie A, Serie B, all of the Serie C gironi and Serie D if you are a sadist. You can also talk about the national team or topics related to Italy in general, but lets stick mostly to football.

I heard about this VAR poo poo

You saw it in the World Cup and you’ll see it here. I’ve seen it in other leagues and I think Italy is the only one that does it right. I don’t remember any real game breaking mistakes last year but do remember some really important decisions.

The Supercoppa won’t happen til Christmas time

Yup. Milan vs. Juve. Again.

Miscellaneous Important Things

In conclusion, as always

I will watch Serie A with you until December, whereupon Szczesny, Milik and Zielinski will be sold to Fenerbahce and Besiktas, while all the other also-runs will have ended up benched or on loan in Serie B.

Amazingly enough, over half of the national team now plays in Italy. I guess it shows.

In the UK, Eleven Sports has the rights to Serie A. Right now, they are a stream only through their website and app, but supposedly they are trying to get TV channels. Also, they will be airing some matches on Facebook.

I watched quite a bit of Serie A last year because it was available on DAZN (a sports streaming service). So I will probably pop in here now and then to say hi.

So I guess you can add DAZN to the OP: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DAZN#Sports_rights

Sounds like ESPN will going to go with their own studio crew for the games they show on TV, with Mark Donaldson and Matteo Bonetti as their crew. That should probably be pretty good, Bonetti was always fine with BeIN, and Donaldson was good in the ICC games this summer.

I do look forward to having the main international commentator feeds on the ESPN+ games though, they're all knowledgeable, and when they have 2 of them team up on the late/marquee match-ups the coverage is usually excellent. Also, going without random Ray Hudson or Phil Schoen appearances is a goddamn blessing.

Ah wow, that actually caught me by surprise. Marchisio rumors had popped up throughout the last year, but I figured he was staying when there were no specific transfer rumors about him this summer.

I bet he goes somewhere for a few seasons, likely outside of Italy, and comes back to work for the club. He's Juve through and through.

Looks like Zaza is going to Torino rather than Samp. Sampdoria had agreed terms with Valencia but Torino was doing it concurrently and he'd rather go there.

De Laurentiis was mad about Roma rejecting his offer for Alisson and said this:

quote:

I've always suspected that the real owner of Liverpool is also that of Rome. A little bird whispered it in my ear a few years ago. And if that is true, with a shared ownership they could not both compete in the Champions League.
