to answer your question, yes the supply ship jed talks to is the one he yells at god for sinking despite it being his fault for apparently not understanding how a harbor works

so I made more notes about this than we bothered to talk about cuz I like boats:

hurricanes move at say... twenty miles per hour at most right? it's not like 1999 was the era of astrolabes and dead reckoning at sea. radios and weather satellites existed 20 years ago.

I'm still confused as to how you couldn't simply monitor the weather situation, and then when the storm changes direction just order the fleet to hit flank speed for a few hours and get the gently caress out of the way. at the very least run out in front of it? i know that even leisurely strolls of deployments from port to port average 8-10 knots for carrier groups.

I know it's logistically not that simple and maybe the ships weren't fully provisioned or whatever but... I dunno. seems dubious

mmmm there's precedent there though, they def moved the pacific fleet out Pearl Harbor this last month for that hurricane Lane what hit the island

but yes incurring casualties due to weather... almost as funny as casualties due to ramming cargo ships!

Another great episode. Every time i listen to your stuff i am shamefully reminded of when i was first watching the show when i was younger and learned and adamantly believed that any issue could be solved by doing sick owns to the bad people. His later shows, like The Newsroom, operate on the same principle but I did not believe it as much. Whether Sorkin changed or I changed, who can say.

as to toby's supposed heel turn in this episode, toby is the quintessential yuppie.

quote:

In the 1980s, he embarked on a debating tour with Abbie Hoffman titled "Yippie versus Yuppie". Rubin's argument in the debates was that activism was hard work and that the abuse of drugs, sex, and private property had made the counterculture "a scary society in itself." He maintained that "wealth creation is the real American revolution. What we need is an infusion of capital into the depressed areas of our country." A later political cartoon portrayed Rubin as half-guerrilla and half-businessman.[31]

this becomes clear in one of the later cheese day episodes but toby used to be "radical," got burned out, and then decided to make some money by selling out and justifying it to himself that its pragmatic and gradually improving society

Yup, it becomes Double Certain once Sorkin bails on the show that Toby's personality is rapidly being reduced to "curmudgeonly" with no real convictions or political philosophy, and he's increasingly used as a cog in the plot rather than to demonstrate any point.

Great episode as always.

I had forgotten that the guy they reject for Mendoza was the dude from The White Shadow. That was one of my dad's favorite shows so we watched DVDs of it when I was a kid. It was good, if a little Very Special Episode-y, which may just be me looking at it with 30 years of hindsight.

I started listening a few days ago and caught up.

Here's my history with the show. It's the show I tried to like in my more liberal years in college, in the leadup to Obama's election. I tried to binge it from the start, but lost interest pretty quickly mid-season 1. Everyone was an insufferable prick. I'm fully aware of Sorkin's repuation as a writer and icon, including his White Male Boomer Liberalism. Beyond that, most of what I've seen of S1-4 was sporadic.

I did watch all of seasons 6 and 7 because I found the question, especially in the leadup to Obama getting elected, of how someone becomes POTUS interesting.

I graduated college in 2009, and my politics starting drifting more and more away from "contrarian liberalism" to the Actual Left, and Bernie's campaign opened the floodgates. I realized what I've seen of The West Wing was symptomatic of how the liberals and Democrats royally hosed up and got us into this current mess IRL. So I learned to hate the show use it as a framing device to explain why Liberalism is poo poo.

Decent podcast, but I'm enough of a dick to say the podcast's best when the episode you're talking about is godawful. When's the next awful episode?

perfectly valid criticism and thanks for listening!

so, you'll be disappointed next week because In Excelsis Deo is widely regarded to be an excellent episode although spoilers i got some beefs with it.

Eventually we'll porobably tack away from digging in on ep-specific issues: you can only talk so many times about Charlie-Tokenization or Leo-Boomerism or The Never Win before it becomes trite and should be, for long-time listeners, "understood" so to speak that it's fundamentally bad and we needn't flog a dead horse.

currenlty starting to think through how we'll maybe bring to bear sliiiightly more trivia, current-events, socialist theory, etc. in the case where it's a middle-of-the-road episode that doesn't have anything standout to dig in on. My personal hope is that the content of our 35-40 minutes continues to gradually shift along the spectrum from what so far has been pretty specific Television Analysis, to Critique, to Leftist Discussion without leaving any of those first two things entirely in the dust. Guest Hosts also open the door for some fun stuff and I'm hoping our ep this week works out well in that regard!

it would be worth talking about the huge fracas that happened over the emmy for that episode, too. sorkin hogged the mic at the acceptance and the other credited writer got justifiably mad. sorkin then claimed the other guy didn't actually write the episode at all and happened to get a credit through luck of the draw

Toby:
Food is cheaper! Clothes are cheaper, steel is cheaper, cars are cheaper ... Phone service is cheaper! You feel me building a rhythm here? That's because I'm a speech writer and I know how to make a point.

Policewoman:
Toby.

Toby:
It lowers prices, and it raises income. You see what I did with 'lowers' and 'raises' there? It's called the science of listener attention. We did repetition, we did floating opposites, and now you end with the one that's not like the others. Ready? Free trade stops wars. And that's it. Free trade stops wars, and we figure out how to fix the rest. One world, one peace... I'm sure I've seen that on a sign somewhere.

And to be clear, I really want to see this podcast kill the sacred cow by demolishing supposedly good episodes. Not merely criticize them. I'm talking about the "good" episodes that are nonetheless symptomatic of liberal pathologies; where entire plots are pretty much conjured out of thin air over what lanyards consider conflict.

Random comment: Maybe it might be helpful to consider The West Wing's fans who are conservative. They include more than just the decorum types. Frank Luntz was a big fan of the show. Chances are, if there's some aspect of the show that both liberals and conservatives like, it's really worth interrogating from Left. Because the show is a love letter to the ruling class in general before it's a love letter specifically to establishment liberalism.

Oh trust me, we fully intend on doing just that.

When you watch this show through a critical eye, it's hard to NOT find a million things wrong with every single scene. And as Gunshow Poophole stated, eventually we can start talking about more interesting topics as the show starts to recycle its own tepid viewpoints.

(Eager to poo poo all over the episode where Josh is anti weed, which Sorkin surely wrote while nose deep in a Scarface pile of cocaine)

That one speech about how great America used to be from a boomer's point of view that got talked about when it aired as being the best written thing ever was probably the most I've ever laughed and rolled my eyes at something at the same time. It's such sanctimonious saccharine cringe with a good ol' dose of "you lazy millennial don't do anything like us boomers".

That dumb poo poo is actually what got me to watch The West Wing (at least the first season) because I wanted to see what else Sorkin worked on because he seemed like the kind of guy who would write comedy gold.

Edit: I actually watched it again. Yep. Coulda gone for a major victory there but then decided to turn right into middle-of-the-road center before waxing poetic on how the imperialist, racist country used to do things for "moral" reasons.
