hi GBS let’s talk about organized crime and infamous gangs that existed back then or still exist today. I started playing Yakuza 0 and I realized I don’t know anything about Japanese gangs or how they work or if they stuff people into boxes and give them sky burials. But then I ended up on a Wikipedia binge last night and started reading about the American mafia and that’s really cool too! I like reading about this stuff, and it’s also hard to find decent documentaries that aren’t History Channel or Spike TV garbage. Let’s talk about doing crimes, goons. Post cool things you learned.

There's a wing place in the city that changes it's name and branding every 7 years which is currently called Big Wing's. It was owned by this guy until 2015 as Wing World. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatoon/two-views-emerge-of-alleged-leader-of-fallen-saints-1.2918141 and is well known as a Hell's Angels front. But the wings are absurdly good, and reasonably priced, and it's not like the Angels are much more evil than any other company, so they're good by me.

That’s kinda cool. Hells Angels are another group I know little about. I wonder if any of its popularity comes from it being a front. I read a book on Mexican cartels, mostly on the Sinaloa.  It was required reading in one of my courses, but it was a book i unfortunately rented from Chegg and had to return. The bulk of the book was interviews with ex cartel members, current members, anonymous law enforcement, related folks. Plenty of them mentioned paranoia and trying to maintain a low profile throughout life. Also I thought Mexican cartels would perform silent assassinations at night. Nope, turns out they have enough power and “legal” protection to brazenly kill people in public areas in broad daylight.

I've never really had the chance to interact with any kind of Mafia. I assume such organizations still exist but I've never personally interacted with them. Criminal street gangs ontoh I have had plenty of time with. Once you have an in with someone in a gang with clout and seniority (at least one body and having done time) you suddenly have access to a reliable means of profit so long as you mantain that in. Let me put it like this. I was close to a a guy who ran poo poo in this particular section of city. Because of who he was I could go anywhere within his auspice and be expected to be treated fairly. No short counts, no stepped on poo poo. No one would try to rob me either. Why? Because he had made it known that I was operating under his blessing so an attack on me was an attack on his authority. I found out how serious he was about that when he pistol-whipped the gently caress out of an underling that tried to short me a g or two. Chump change, barely worth mentioning, but he took it as a personal affront and thus that kid had to get his poo poo kicked in. These things are never free though. I earned that blessing by putting in work for the man. I took a lot of risks to get that "in". You're always proving yourself in that world, you can never relax. I pity the men trapped in those gangs.

The angels run business thing is pretty common. I'm semi convinced that these days a fair amount get their patches or whatever on the ability to launder money through an already established business. The days of having to be an asskicking beer swilling intimidator with an unpunished murder on the books are long gone. Posted using Tapatalk

I worked for an attorney who was representing a pair of cops who moonlit as contract killers for the mafia, I learned that they're generally unscrupulous guys who just really like money. If you're interested, the attorney I worked for had a part at the end of Goodfellas in the courtroom scene.
