No, but skills weren't in yet at the time. There were 4 tiers of equipment and the first three were pretty quick, followed by a vertical cliff for tier 4. T3 was relatively strong though, it reminded me of Albion in that way.

For combat dark souls was referenced a few times, but its not the only one. Honestly we looked into lots of other games but this was never going to be a project where you just took two existing ideas and mashed them up. When this game was brainstormed there was a big initiative to create new original games. So it gets compared with rust but it isn't something we are actually working from. Games like rust or ark are better for figuring out pacing, pvp, server resets, resources, and that sort of thing. Amazon also has this big culture of not obsessing over the competition.

The official answer is "no".

Some random made a poll asking in the alpha discord and over half were not prime members so take that with a grain of salt.

Also for those curious - in this discord - https://discord.gg/szVMUtE - in the leak text channel you can buy alpha keys for $30...

So just from loving around for a bit, if anyone cares this does have some things that might make it a real contender in the field it's trying to enter into.

The big thing is that it runs well, especially for a Crytek offshoot, in terms of both FPS and network. I got into a fight with another level one dude without lovely swords and with a couple very brief, very minor hitches, swings hit where they should, there was no teleporting, my FPS didn't randomly drop when the dude moved or any of the other things you've seen in survival sandboxes. Functional netcode is basically non-existent in the genre and the servers already support well in excess of the player caps of any of its competitors, without any real major lag.

Second they are treating it as an actual MMO. Gear progression is more in-depth than just light -> medium -> heavy armor. It has item rarity/quality and generally speaking your gear does make a difference from what I was able to see and ask people about. I don't know if it makes it impossible for undergeared people to kill geared people or not, haven't really gotten that far into it.

The map is big and looks like they're planning for it to get quite a great deal bigger, while also being pretty varied in both topography and surroundings.

Finally, though obviously this is more of a hope than anything I can see as a direct result of what they've done or said, if they can give people more reasons to play the game past the build a base, kill a dude stage of the game, I think it could really end up being worthwhile. They've got all the money in the world and presumably a sizable team behind it, so it's possible that if this doesn't turn out to be an ill conceived money grab it could be pretty cool.

Sabin's Adventure

Log in. gently caress around on the beach. Drink Sea Water which replenishes thirst. (???) Drink LOTS of Sea Water. Delicious.

Find a turkey. Murder turkey. Cook turkey. Yum.

Collect random poo poo (rocks/sticks) - make a hatchet. Murder trees. Get logs. Make a bow and arrows. Murder more turkeys to make more arrows.

Fight some random zombie that appeared. Gives me cool stuff I guess.

Run around in the nearby town on voice chat being dumb, asking if people want to be my friend. Some level 29 guild guy runs up and says to follow him. gently caress it why not. (Cloak and Dagger was the guild I think?)

We're running along and he's talking to me, seems like a nice enough guy. I see 4 guys crouched in the grass, C&D guy doesn't notice and runs past them. Then suddenly 4 muskets go off. Guy doesn't seem to notice and keeps going. (All 4 shots missed him lol!)

4 guys then stand up. They are NiSa guild. (My brief look at the map gave me an idea that they and C&D were enemies) I call out to the guy, "Hey. Um. These guys are trying to murder you." One of the NiSa's go "SHUT UP!" and then proceeds to try and murder me. I have just my starter weapon and I'm still level 1 but I give it a go. He seems to be decently equipped. Some kind of steel armor, steel sword, musket and shield.

From my days of Darkfall and LiF:MMO I'm no stranger to combat. I dance around his rear end and he kept thrust attacking me for some reason so it was easy to dodge. I start hurting him a little. Then a little more. He lands a hit and chunks half my HP. I keep dodging and circle strafing and just straight up beating his rear end with my wooden sword. Suddenly my mouse falls out of the game (I was full screen) and I'm clicking poo poo on my 2nd monitor. Had to alt tab back to the game. I was dead. =(

The other 3 dudes, from what I could tell casually, had a hard time taking down the C&D guy who seemed more heavily geared than them but with 2 guys in his face and the 3rd shooting the musket he finally fell. Then we were both finished off. The whole time over voice chat the C&D guy was whining like a bitch at the odds. "How could you guys do this! This isn't honorable! That guy over there is only level 1! HOW COULD YOU!"

The NiSa guys were mostly "LOL gently caress YOU GET hosed YOU SUCK" type guys. I wasn't impressed.

Then I respawned somewhere else in the world and I guess there was this huge fight on global chat but I never saw it? Orv did.

So now I'm curious if Global chat is more like Region chat because I never saw the fallout in chat. Testing will be required I guess.

I went about my business and got another bow and arrows. I am the king of murdering wolves and elk, beware. Combat PvE is pretty simple and easy. Especially if you can find a fence. Wolves, for me at least last night, won't jump the fence so I just murder them easy.

PvP seems like where this game will be more interesting as is par for the course in most survival MMOs. I really like how fleshed out the crafting system is and it's super easy to follow. There are LOTS of skills already and MORE that are not unlocked.

I saw one guy cast magic to heal himself, no offensive magic is in the game yet.

That's my 3 hours of play time last night.

The game NEVER hitched or faltered or anything except for that one instance my mouse left the game. Perhaps I was spamming too many buttons? Possible I hit the windows key. I'm on a fairly older computer i5 3rd gen, GTX 660. 16GB of DDR3 RAM. I was getting about 30 FPS on low graphics quality but it was VERY smooth and VERY playable. Most MMOs of this nature have SUPER lovely (Looking at you LiF:MMO) networking but this game has great networking so far. There were about 400 people on Server 1 when I logged in and it was going fine.

I have proper expectations for a game such as this and so far I'm impressed. Color me optimistic.

Alright. Everyone give any spare gold you can to m2tt, you can give gold effortlessly by clicking on your gold and typing in his name and it automatically adds it to his bank account. He seems to be on the most. He'll attempt to get us a claim so we can figure out how much things cost in terms of resources and all that. Sure everything is subject to change but better to get a general idea now I suppose. Him and I did some northern undead city runs and got lots of crap that we sold for gold.

Armor and Weapons are all pretty much the same value, looks like the devs haven't messed with those that much.
Feel free to level up whichever trade/skill you want.

As for STATS!
Right now just stick to STR, DEX, PHYS as those are the primary PvP stats right now. Starting tomorrow night I'm going to start running around killing people. No reason to not start learning how to fight, dodge, use combos right away while it's still alpha. Learn how to land arrow hits on running targets, etc. If you die you don't lose your equipped items, just only the stuff you're carrying... So there is almost no down side. Have a PvP Char and then have another one that does crafting if you're scared of being inconvenienced.

At this point I feel like there will be a wipe of some sort in the future so there is no reason to not just gently caress around right now.

For those on the fence, sign up and wait for an invite, there are suppose to be more invited in every week or so I think is a timeline I heard? If you're impatient, just pay $20-30 for an invite through the leakers that are out there. Tons of people have already and are successfully in the game right now. It's again, surprisingly stable for a game in alpha and the combat is fluid. Not super impressive compared to Life is Feudal but sufficient. This game has the potential to scratch that massive Guild vs Guild PvP itch.

ALSO! Hyperion is already in ANW and they are mandatory kill on sight all the time. Don't ever let one slip past you without harassment. This stems back from my Darkfall days and the LiF:MMO. The majority of Hyperion leadership are loving care bear cry baby edgelords to the extreme. Always! ALWAYS have fun at their expense.

Company Status Report

The goal tonight was to get about 4-6 of us online to take a claim for our own. We need to start learning the in's and out's of claim management and doing it first hand is the best way.

First we ran East to a place where the Company - The Iron Bank - had lost protection status, unfortunately Cloak & Dagger, the previous owners, wanted it back and were successful in doing so. We skirmished with some of their members and a few of our low geared guys went down but we came out on top with someone's iron armor and musket since that person was marked a criminal. When you die as a criminal you lose EVERYTHING on your person.

For some reason C&D didn't wardec Iron Bank so by attempting to reclaim the territory, they went into criminal mode which allowed us to freely engage them. Also, if you die as a non-criminal, you don't lose anything on your person - only your inventory. And since we went in with no inventory anyways... We had nothing to lose. So we chalk up getting those items as a small victory.

(Side note to think about - if we come in RIGHT BEHIND a company that blows up all the walls for us and somehow distract them from immediately taking the claim. We could easily claim it out from under them. Wouldn't that be some salty tears? Something to consider I guess.)

We still had powder kegs and an itch to blow something up and claim it. There was another town in the West that was 20min from losing protection. We moved our resources BACK to that location but en route to attempt to capture it, one of the opposing guild members was able to just outrun us and get inside and refill the claim with the proper resources to re-enable protection. =( gently caress!

We mused over taking a claim way in the North but... the North is pretty barren and far from anything important. Then we spotted that the Iron Bank was just about to lose their claim in a territory that we'll call Ariana Grande. This is not an ideal claim in terms of resources but it's in a okay'ish, central'ish, area on the map... Close to several NPC towns and still within striking distance of several other territories... but it doesn't spawn the critical resource you need in order to enable protection status. That's probably why it was vulnerable to attack. We'll most likely have to buy it from another Guild but we'll worry about those details later.

As we approached, the pubbies had done a decent job building walls and getting quite a little shanty town going. There was currently only 1 defender who was constantly opening the gate and harvesting the trees nearby. Through clever planning and sneaky sneaky crawling through the grass tactics, we were able to get inside undetected. (Crouch walking or crawling does not show your name/guild name so it's like entering stealth mode)

Lucky for us they only had a meager Teir 1 flag protecting the glowing spot on the ground that would allow us to steal the land right from under their noses. We rushed in and set the powdered kegs and BOOM. Flag gone. We ran in with our own piece of parchment that would declare the area ours and that is how Goonstown was established.

Taking ownership happens immediately and everything becomes ours... including all the buildings, walls and gates the previous Company had built. We then locked the poor lone defender out and he fled.

We then lined up and took a screenshot of us and Goonstown but I won't share it until the NDA is lifted, but it was nice to immortalize the moment.

Once you claim a territory you get 1 hour of Protection which means nobody can come in and wreck your stuff or re-take the claim until the protection is gone. Since we had none of the special resource to enable further protection, we set out to increase the defenses in the area. The special resource is only available to mine in certain places on the map and already staked out by other Companies. Our goal is to eventually take one of the territories that naturally has one of these nodes but for now, this area would allow us to get an idea of how building worked. BONUS! We got all the poo poo that Iron Bank had stockpiled. Multiple storage units worth of crafting materials, weapons and armor.

We spent another two hours building more walls, reinforcing existing ones and walling off the claim point and putting an upgraded flag on top of it. By upgrading walls it requires more powder kegs to blow them up. (There are siege hammers in the game but.... yeah... they suck.)

So now we have a home to call our own. I don't know how long we'll hold it since most of us play at night but we'll do our damndest. Once we can consolidate our power and hopefully get some more players in the Alpha - we can start eyeing bigger territories.

So yeah. The game is fun I guess.

I've been playing for slightly less then a week so here's some information on the current state of server one for everyone just jumping in.

Currently, high-level large scale pvp and the economy are completely and totally hosed by a set of game breaking bugs. These bugs range from near invincibility, totally removing the ability for anyone else to siege your territory and an infinite supply of gold/XP. So this stuff is largely why there are so many vocal higher level players pushing for a server wipe.

And here's the current status of guild drama, players in Cloak and Dagger, NiSa, and Ghosts have been openly using bugs to attack companies, this the cause of the current fights happening constantly in the middle/north of the map. These fights are largely C&D vs. NiSa, and Raged + Black Suns vs. Ghosts. So far these have been the largest fights on the server, 30v30ish.

You can safely split the server into three camps, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd wave players. The 1st wave players are all insanely rich and had contact or are Amazon staff who at times have directly touched the game's economy, they control huge caches of resources and money but are very few in number. The 2nd wave of players moved in and immediately started taking land from the largely understaffed 1st wave companies, this created a lot of animosity between these two groups that is largely shaping what is happening currently. This leaves the 3rd wave players who are mostly stuck because the only land that isn't heavily fortified is the northern plots with good access to resources but totally lack the azure to defend them.

Nice breakdown. I was in the 2nd wave, but I didn't really play any since there weren't any other goons to dick around with and I didn't feel like finding a guild.

Clanpot - We actually have an easy way to get you leveled up and rich within a few hours. poo poo Draax just started and he's already higher level than me because of the leveling area we found. So no it's not EVE style of outfitting but it's darn close right now.

Jess. Why aren't you chilling with us? Unless you're already with a tight group of friends that's cool, which Company are you with?

And the things Jess has pointed out are true. Those that got in before everyone else were just personal Amazon Dev invites so those people mucked around but not with any serious involvement. 2nd wave hit and more experienced/try hard people got in and started throwing their weight around. Now with 3rd wave last week and (possibly 4th wave today?) It's getting more chaotic. Which is good! In fact for us to own territory and if we can hold it is a good sign for us, people see us on the map and the psychology will start working in our favor.

Bugs are being reported but some devs have responded on the forums that they will be address and for people to please not abuse them but they acknowledge they can't stop them as it's all part of the alpha. Which is fine! As long as all these kinks are worked out NOW this is only going to help the game survive longer after launch. One of the biggest things that killed LiF:MMO for alot of people was bad networking but also the multitude of duping bugs.

New World isn't coming out for a few years I'll bet but drat if I'm not having a blast for a game still in Alpha. gently caress you Star Citizen. Land Citizen is much better.
