One of my earliest remaining memories, as an old person, is the Christmas for which I asked for Atari ST game "Bloodwych", which cost like $15 or something at the time, and my dad was like "are you sure you don't want something better?" and I was like "are you suuuure it's better? I don't think it's going to be better." (It was obviously not going to be better.)

Bam, Christmas day, turns out my dad got some kind of yamaha keyboard for me and my brother to share, which basically meant just for my brother because he was older and a total dick, and also neither of us wanted it anyway or had any interest in making music (but if I'd ever tried to have a go with it my brother would have instantly insisted it was his turn now anyway). And it was like $200 worth of gift. gently caress you dad, for the lovely gift of no games.

But on the other hand, the actual earliest 'memory' but mostly reconstructed from context, is a 48K Spectrum in 1982, which was years of fun and also seeded my career as a programmer, so thanks years-earlier dad. Also a great way to make friends through the power of piracy!
You should have gone into music like your dad wanted.

More like my brother should have. :argh:
Yeah, you could be in a band together now instead of getting paid garbage money to go blind in a computer lab

My parents refused to buy me video games or systems, so I combined birthday money from grandparents + relatives with what I had saved for a new Xbox and a copy of morrowind goty. The first thing I did was make a custom class called "proctologist" and then got killed by the first mudcrab I encountered.

I played that game so much as a kid that eventually every loading screen took a few minutes because I kept storing random crap in places everywhere. I'd also meticulously place all of my unsellable expensive gear in my balmora house in very ordered, precise stacks, but after a bit there was too much stuff not in boxes and the game would just randomly throw everything everywhere, so there were bows clipping out from behind walls, beds etc and my precious gear stacks and skull collection were ruined.
Good first game

imagine getting an elder scrolls as your first game and just thinking every game is like that
I only had action games on the NES, platformers and shooters and the like, so the first time a friend rented Final Fantasy III for their Super Nintendo it blew my mind. I had no idea video games could do that when I was 6. I hadn't ever heard of an RPG.

A father and son, reunited by this thread. That's the gift of games.
