Loling that MLB rain delayed the Cubs at Nats game today for hours despite everybody knowing that they would not be able to play today and then rescheduling the game for a day when DC might get hit by a loving hurricane.

Some real awful baseball weather on the east coast lately. Lets check in with the Phillies to see how they are dealing with it:

I guess the Phillies didn't go far enough with the flamethrowers.

The McCourt-owned Dodgers and the Mets both needed to take loans from MLB in order to make payroll.

Both of those cases involve levels of negligence that should probably have been criminal and in the case of the Dodgers they were forced to sell the team because of it. Baseball has actually become significantly more profitable since then as a result of TV deals and MLB's investment in streaming technology. Teams could definitely afford to spend more right now.

The Nats just swept the Phillies to kill their chances at the playoffs, Juan Soto hit 3 home runs to put him number 3 on the list of most home runs in a season as a teenager and owns the highest OPS in a season as a teenager. But all that I will remember from this series is this:

Arizona's payroll in 2018 is $141,645,487, that's more than $50,000,000 under the tax threshold. They could have easily afforded to pay JDM to be on that team.

Also the Yankees are intentionally hamstringing themselves to stay under $197m this season so yelling about how they're so profligate is some img-timeline poo poo.

Yeah, I really fail to see how a salary cap (on its own at least) would significantly change this dynamic. The Yankees and the Dodgers seem to live being a little bit above or below the luxury tax as necessary, some teams situationally run up high payrolls, and then half the league makes no effort to have a competitive payroll. Without making the salary cap significantly lower than the current luxury tax (which the players would never accept) or adding an aggressive salary floor (which the owners would never accept) I don't think a salary cap would change much of anything.

^^^Well they could do something about how racist it is, but considering how long it took them to take action on Chief Wahoo I am not holding my breath.

I was afraid they were gonna wind up stuck with Vegas, this isn't really much better. Gotta be the largest distance between a AAA club and its MLB affiliate.

Odd. Was every team closer to the East Coast taken?

Is there a site that keeps track of all the Minor League Affiliate Shuffle?

Their last AAA affiliate was in Syracuse and was bought by the Mets. There are only a few deals with affiliates that expire every year so the selection was basically limited to Fresno, Vegas and Nashville (which the Rangers seem to have gotten to first).

AAA is split between the PCL and the International league. I assume that which league each team is in is based on some combination of legacy of the pre-affiliated days and weird baseball nonsense.

Edit: I checked and all the International league teams are in the US lol.

I don't think anyone saw Yelich blowing up like he did though.

I swear half the writers at Fangraphs predicted that he would, or at least that the move to a different park would give him better numbers.

To be fair to the Marlins, Brinson was a legit top 100 prospect. He just happened to turn into, uh, one of the worst players in baseball this year.

They benched him for a while but then they let him play again and he was less bad. Like he was still one of the worst players in baseball, but not like, record settingly bad. So far this year he has -3.2 fWAR this year which is like 4th or 5th worst ever, when at one point he was on pace for like -5.

Plus, that 'stache.

I know that he's out performed even the optimistic estimates for his performance but geez, that's solid reliever money not starter money. Do teams just not scout guys coming from the NPB or what?

The Cardinals reportedly tried to lock him down for a longer deal but he specifically wanted a shorter term. Presumably the idea is that he shows what he can do over these 2 years and tries to get paid based on that, probably over a 5-year deal or so in free agency.

Ah that makes sense. Though I wouldn't be surprised if he winds up regretting that based on how free agency has gone for older pitchers lately.
