He was convicted of previous felonies in the state, and there's a federal law that says having a gun with that past is a crime. The federal law got involved because this was in Minnesota and the gun was manufactured in Massachusetts/Connecticut; therefore there was interstate commerce. He got 17.5 years in prison + 5 years supervised release for this video.
