Do you like superheroes? Check out my CYOA Mutants: Uprising

How about weird historical fiction? Try Vampires of the Caribbean

Humankind has begun to mutate. While still a minority, mutants display a wide range of strange, bizarre, and sometimes terrifying abilities. Some are physically changed – scales, wings, claws, or strange colored skin – others look just like you or me.

Some mutants struggle to be accepted by the rest of humanity, while others rage against the discrimination of the so-called mundane humans. A Brotherhood has formed, a series of underground cells of mutant freedom fighters who will stop at nothing to right the wrongs against their fellow mutants. To the Brotherhood mutants are the next step of human evolution, a step toward perfection or perhaps even perfection itself, while mundanes are the Neanderthals, doomed for extinction. Many call the Brotherhood a terror organization, but they insist that mutants have nothing to fear from them.

In California there are politicians who are fighting for registration of mutants. You can’t background check a mutant before giving them the ability to murder people with a thought, so the best thing we can do, they say, is to form a registry of known mutants, and their abilities. There is opposition, but the idea is gaining traction among the public. Federally, the government has killed similar bills, but they are watching California with interest to see if such a thing works on the state level.

There are rumors of paramilitary organizations using mutants against other mutants, or of horrible experimentation done in the name of creating super soldiers. Secret societies bent on world domination for one side, or the other. These are just rumors. Right?

You are Jane “Zombie” Meyers, the twenty-eight year old leader of the Los Angeles area chapter of the Brotherhood of Mutants, a quasi-terrorist organization with separate cells around the country - even the world. You can take any amount of damage and keep going as long as you keeps your heart rate and adrenaline up. You have enhanced strength when high on adrenaline, as well. After your heart rate slows (sometimes due to loss of blood) you will fall into a death-like coma and your body repairs itself. This can take hours, or days, depending on the damage. You do not believe that you can be killed (barring falling into an industrial shredder, or decapitation and even then…? You aren’t in a hurry to test that theory, however).

[This is a setting that is basically Marvel’s X-Men, but without canon characters. There is no School for Gifted Children in New York. There may be a leader of ‘good’ mutants, but it is not Charles Xavier. There is no Magneto at the head of the Brotherhood. As a group it has no ‘head’, merely loosely connected cells each led regionally by different people. I have a loose plan, but ultimately we will craft this story together.]

:siren: :siren: ...PREVIOUSLY ON "MUTANTS UPRISING"... :siren::siren:
(original thread) (wiki)

Zombie leads her Brotherhood cell in defense of a non-profit shelter for at risk mutant teens (Redención House), teams up with a local gang (Barrio Boneyard) to take out the mutant-hating gang (15th Street Locos), scoops up some new members from the Mutant Lives Matter group (lol Digger), saves lives at a Mutant Lives Matter rally, confronts a possible mole in her cell (Vigilante), scopes out the secret desert base of Haven [Vigilante was there too!] while a winged mutant assaults Anna Fernandez's house. Zombie assumes the assault has something to do with Anna's unborn child, as the assailant left behind an amniocentesis syringe at the scene.

Zombie takes the Redención House kids to Disneyland for a well deserved break, decides to blackmail some state senators to block the passing of the GDPA (Genetic Diversity Protection Act, aka Mutant Registration Act), gets involved in defending against a robbery at a grocery store, spends the night in jail, then discovers there's a potential problem in the Bay Area messing with her blackmail plans.

After checking up on her first blackmail target, Zombie discovers another party is trying to stop the blackmail and keep the GDPA passing, so she decides to check up on her second senator. This escalates quickly, with unknown mutants attacking her, and she wakes up in a dump with no memory of the previous five days, next to the corpse of her companion.

When she returns to her base of operations she finds it abandoned (wisely) by her compatriots, who feared that the location was compromised. Zombie manages to touch base with Jake, a psychic who has gotten roped into Brotherhood business, and with the help of him and the Barrio Boneyard snorts all the cocaine and bets it all on her regenerative powers to survive a deep dive into her erased memories.

The group of Norse-god-named mutants who had captured her are intent on bringing on "Ragnarok," and her mentor, Deimos, seems to be involved with them. He assures Odin that Zombie is worth keeping on the board, albeit with her memories wiped.

(And we totally banged Jake)

Meeting up with the rest of your Brotherhood cell, you find that they bought a run down mansion in your absence, part of your ultimate plan to help Anna Fernandez expand her mission to help mutant youth (and run your other operations out of the basement).

Due to the imminent vote on the GDPA, a 'peaceful protest' was scheduled by the Mutant Lives Matters group, and Anna's kids stole her truck to attend. Anna's brothers Marcelo and Antonio have gone after them, and Zombie is at the mansion, monitoring the Brotherhood members who are in attendance.

Vigilante (Virginia "Ginny" Hayes) is also at the protest, along with a big rolling metal thing that looks vicious and is code named "Sentinel." She appears to be working for Haven now. When counter protestors (The Purists) arrive on scene, things get volatile. Vigilante teleports from the back of the crowd toward the front, and then all tentacled hell breaks loose.

Oh, yeah, there's some other dimension which she can access to teleport long distances and it's full of squirmy tentacled monsters. A giant one flops out right in the middle of Los Angeles, apparently through the rip in space-time Vigilante creates, and its screams are starting to knock people unconscious.

Zombie is miles away, unable to do anything but watch.

Do you like superheroes? Check out my CYOA Mutants: Uprising

How about weird historical fiction? Try Vampires of the Caribbean

:siren: Spectrum

Barbara “Spectrum” Nolan ran a hand through her hair, and sat down in the middle of the road. She wasn’t sitting next to Eel, but she was close enough that she could see his bald head up where the Purists were standing. Some of the Southwestern Baptist ‘church’ members were getting closer to the line of sitters. The more the mutants sat and said nothing, the angrier the Purists were getting.

I’m glad I’m not up there, she thought, and felt guilty. She was all about activism and investigating, and boots on the ground, but direct confrontation like what the Purists were pushing for was too much. The march was buzzing as people talked amongst themselves as they sat down on the hot asphalt, many people sitting on their cardboard signs for a modicum of comfort. Various call-and-repeat protest chants were erupting from the huge crowd, but they were all starting to sit.

This wasn’t what she’d been expecting, and the change of plans made Spectrum a little nervous. Still, it seemed to be going ok.

Louder yelling snapped her attention back to where Eel was, and she focused just in time to see a water bottle fly from behind the Purists into the MLM protestors. It smacked Eel in the head, and she half-stands, but stops and waits for instructions.

:siren: YOU

You can see the group of teens/Billy/Antonio/Marcelo are finally off of the main protest route, but things are getting heated up at the front lines. Eel is hit with a half full plastic water bottle, and the mutants sitting next to him are yelling back at the Purists.

Squib is talking to the people sitting around him in the middle of the demonstration, and you recognize one of them. Scratch, from the Barrio Boneyard. “Intercept, is the Boneyard in the protest?”

A ten second pause, and then he nods. “Yeah, they’re scattered throughout.”

“Any near Eel?”

”What should we do?” asks Spectrum. Eel is rubbing his head and looking around, keeping the mutants near him relatively calm. You glance at the screen where the Sentinel is idling, along with its four handlers.

“Keep the peace, no matter what,” you say. “Make sure the Bones hear it too, Squib. Spectrum, get up there at the front and pull Eel out, pretend you’re a medic.”

You get a round of affirmations through the comms, but you can’t sit back and relax yet. Spectrum’s camera moves as she starts in toward Eel, who says wryly, “Thanks for the water,” to the Purists. He stops short of actually drinking anything from the half-full bottle that hit his head, which is probably a good thing because who knows what’s actually in it.

The Purists step back a little, or at least, they stop advancing, and seem to be satisfied by standing and shouting anti-mutant slurs at the sitting people. In the rear of the march people are just beginning to sit down - the wide helicopter shot you can see on one of the newscasts is pretty impressive. You can see a reporter and his cameraman near the front line, giving a live report. The hashtag #HumanToo is on the screen while he’s talking, and you grin at Intercept. “Great work.”

:siren: Antonio

Herding a bunch of kids away from the march was easier than he’d thought it was going to be, even if Susie was skeeving the heck out of him. Billy was bringing up the rear, looking fierce under his horns and shaggy hair, but when Susie plucked at Antonio’s sleeve and stopped walking the Brotherhood mutant passed them, giving ‘Tonio a nod.

“What is it now?” he asked her, half afraid to hear the answer.

“You have to go back.” Susie took his hand and held it between them, gently prying open his fingers and revealing the steel washer he was holding. She tapped it. “You’re there.”

“No, I’m here…” Antonio said exasperatedly, catching his brother’s eye as the group paused to wait for them. “Go ahead, I’ll catch up!” he called, and Marcelo nodded, leading the kids away.

“Come,” she said, pulling on his arm, back the way they’d come. “Hurry.”

“Oh man, I’m going to regret this, aren’t I,” he said, letting her drag him down the street.

:siren: The Aesir

Heimdall: It didn’t happen? How…?

Odin: A delay, nothing more. The Master’s servant will come, as promised.

:siren: Virginia Hayes

“What’s going on?” Officer Hamilton turned to Agent Hayes of Haven Corp, and indicated the Sentinel. “Why’d we stop rolling?” His partner, Officer Smith, gave the big machine an impressive amount of side-eye, and returned to visually scanning their surroundings.

“March stopped,” she said. “We’re holding here to make sure no one sneaks back, tries to start anything at the park.”

“That’s the info we’re getting as well,” said Smith, still looking around.

Virginia and her new partner, Agent Jones, looked at each other, the latter rolling his eyes when the LAPD guys weren’t looking. She hid a smile, and then her earpiece barked instructions. ”Weather mutant spotted in the Purists’ ranks. The one from Sacramento. We're moving units in but it's going to be a few minutes.”

“Oh poo poo,” said Jones, and the two police officers looked at him with concern. “Look, Hayes,” he pointed up. Clouds were starting to rotate in the sky, just enough that the movement was discernible. Even as Virginia followed his hand with her eyes the rotation quickened.

“gently caress,” she said, grabbing her sidearm out and checking the tranq rounds.

“It’s too far,” Jones warned, “You won’t get there in time.”

“It’s not too far,” she said, and teleported to the Other Place, leaving behind a puff of sulfurous smoke, her partner, and two very confused LAPD officers.

:siren: YOU

“I’m picking up some chatter,” says Intercept. “Haven just lit up channel six, talking to the LAPD. Weather mutant with the Purists?”

“It’s those loving Nordicks,” you say, trying to lean forward without getting too far into Intercept’s personal space. “Thor, I think?”

“I don’t have a clear picture of him to go off of but… there? A couple rows back and to Eel and Spectrum’s right.” Intercept pointed at another screen almost immediately. “Clouds are spinning up.”

“Eel!” you bark into the comms -

A. “Thor is in with the Purists, I need you to take him out!”
B. “Distract -!

“poo poo,” says Intercept.

Vigilante teleports into the picture, nearly on top of the guy you’ve tentatively identified as Thor, but the space she jumps out of doesn’t close behind her. A squirming mass of tentacles erupts out of thin air, one is wrapped around Vigilante’s waist as she falls awkwardly to the ground, and Something pulls itself from There to Here, its big, heavy, grey, slimy body crushing several Purists as it emerges.

Your mind, understandably, momentarily goes blank as you can’t process what you’re seeing. Intercept is quicker to recover, but he’s looking at you for instructions. Your mouth is open, but nothing is coming out.

(similar but bus sized)

“Get out of there!” you yell into the comms, quite unnecessarily. Intercept’s screens all log into various military and police sites at once, leaving just one with a visual feed for a few moments - one of the news helicopters circling overhead.

The giant creature has squashed quite a few people, Purists and mutants alike, and you have no idea if Eel and Spectrum are okay. They were awfully close, and their button cams are dark.. Vigilante is probably dead? Tentacles as thick as tree trunks are lashing out as the crowd screams and scatters. They aren’t fast enough, not all of them.

From Squib’s cam you can see the grey mound in the distance, he seems to be jumping up and down to get a better look as people panic around him. ”Is that a whale? A squid? What -?!” Fade, one of the Barrio Boneyard’s mutants, the one who can phase between dimensions, appears in the feed, grabbing Squib by the shoulders. ”We gotta go, man!” His eyes are wide, but he seems determined as he looked back over his shoulder at the monstrosity.

Spectrum’s camera feed is suddenly filled with light, and you hold your breath, waiting to see what will be revealed. Eel’s face looms as his hands reach for her shirt. He’s… pulling her to her feet. ”We gotta go!” You get a breathtaking look at a tentacle as it sweeps over their heads, then the video is mostly of their feet as he gets them moving, Spectrum slumped forward.

Your heart is thumping hard, and you clench your fists on the arms of the office chair, accidentally breaking one of them off. You barely notice. The helicopter dips through a dark cloud, and then veers out of it, a violent storm brewing. Lightning begins to strike, not just at the creature but indiscriminately throughout the crowd.

:siren: ANTONIO :siren:

“Uh, why is everyone running?” he asked, still being towed along by Susie. “And what is that?” Antonio planted his feet and forced her to stop as he caught sight of something weird ahead of them. “Oh hell no,” he said, looking at the waving tentacles a few blocks away. “Hell to the no.”

Susie grimaced at him and pulled harder. “You’re there, you’re there…” She was crying suddenly, and then the Anime Tentacle Monster screeched. It reverberated through his body painfully, and Susie’s eyes rolled up in her head and she fell bonelessly into his arms.

“Oh poo poo, poo poo, poo poo, poo poo.” Antonio dragged her into the doorway of what turned out to be a laundromat. He looked up, and down the street. “Stay with her,” he ordered a matronly looking woman, as his body transformed into steel. She gaped at him and nodded, and then he ran down the street, hoping desperately that Susie hadn’t been leading him to his death.

:siren: YOU :siren:

Your phone is ringing, and as Intercept clears his screens to make room for more videos at the scene you notice people throughout the crowd just falling over, with no discernible cause. “The city is scrambling more police,” Intercept says. You can see the LAPD who were there for march crowd control are helping people flee the area and keeping others from coming in, while some advance bravely on the whale-sized squid horror.

It gets its underdeveloped legs underneath it, and begins to circle around. You manage to look at your phone without crushing it. It’s Jake.

Squib yells “Antonio!” and you see Anna’s brother in his livestream, skin gleaming silver. The lightning has stopped, but the dark clouds remain, and ‘Tonio starts to push past Squib and Fade, fighting his way upstream.

You can't tear your eyes away from the screens as the police open fire on the tentacled hellbeast, but you answer your phone. Pressing it to your ear you say, distractedly, "Hello, Shits-gone-Squidways Ops center, this is Zombie speaking. ...How can we make your day an even brighter hellhole?"

"Where are you? Are you there?!" Jake sounds shook.

You raise an eyebrow as the creature recoils from the bullets on the TV. "I'm here. I mean, I'm not there. But Eel..."

"Christ, it's all over the television. It's on every channel!" You can picture him ruffling a hand through his just-a-bit-too-long hair, maybe pacing a bit as he's talking. "What ...where did it come from?"

"Looks like Vigilante got snagged while she was long distance teleporting," you say woodenly, as the tentacled squid monster whale thing lashes out and sends the line of LAPD officers almost literally flying. "Can you get over here, to the mansion? We need to talk."

"I'm already on my way," he says, and you hear a car horn honk through the phone. Jake hangs up, or maybe you hung up, but either way the phone call is over.

"Sentinel is speeding up," says Intercept, pointing at another screen. Eel and Spectrum are still stumbling away, their comms are down, but her camera is still transmitting. Squib and Fade seem to be running toward the backside of the beast, but his feed is too jumbled up to really tell what's going on. Hot Sauce seemed to be clear, but his position is much closer to where the Sentinel tank/robot/mechsuit?? is hurtling up the street.

Wildfire bangs the door open and makes both you and Intercept jump. She barges over to the screens, unapologetically sticking her face in between you and Intercept. "What the gently caress is happening?" she asks.

It's a question you wish you knew the answer to.

“It’s some sort of monster from another dimension,” you say, but your tone leaves a question mark at the end of your statement. “Or maybe it’s just our luck - stars were aligned, maybe.”

The creature is screeching, and more people are stumbling, falling down as they try to get clear of the area. Some aren’t getting up again.

”We have a terrible idea!” yells Squib into the comm, but his audio is filled with static. Intercept shakes his head when you look at him, frowning. The live feed from Squib’s button cam fritzes out and then returns. Fade and Antonio (still steeled up) are standing in front of him. ”We’re going to -” and the squid monster shrieks again, and the video lurches, showing the shocked faces of his companions, then the sky. Antonio leans into the video, shaking it, then the sky moves. They seem to be dragging Squib out of the road. The bulk of the inter-dimensional creature looms behind them.

“Ffffffuuuuuck!” you say, itching to be there, to be helping. A small part of you is glad you’re not. You get out of your seat and start pacing.

“It’s loving moving,” says Wildfire, and it is - moving off to one side off the road and toward the buildings. The newscasters on the TV were staying remarkably calm, assuming that this is some sort of mutant, or mutant by product. The fact that bullets haven’t seemed to hurt it is beginning to crack the facade, and strain is beginning to sound in their voices. The reporter on the ground nearby has stopped transmitting and they don’t know if he’s alive or dead.

Billy’s camera feed shows the group still moving - Marcelo has taken one kid and run them to the van and just came back for another. Scott collapsed at the last screech from the Creature.

Intercept is monitoring all the radio chatter in the area. “Haven is moving in more of their troops to help the LAPD. They don’t know what this is either. Governor is considering the National Guard. LAPD reports bullets not having any affect - the skin is too tough, maybe?”

Digger pokes his head in the door. “Something happening?”

Wildfire snorts.

“Start the rumor that this is a Haven bioweapon to use against mutants,” you say, grasping for anything you can do to spin this in a positive way (for your agenda). Intercept nods, a faint smile under his beard. You peer at one of the screens. Is that Vigilante, hopping in and out of the feed? Someone is blinking in and out of the area right next to the creature, and as you stare it seems that she (or another teleporter? Unlikely, but possible) is picking up injured people and moving them a little further away.

You have a small opportunity to make some moves: These are not mutually exclusive, you can pick more than one.
A. Tell Hot Sauce (last team member with a functioning comm besides Billy) to stop the Sentinel. Recruit nearby mutants to stop it, whatever, stand in front of it, I don’t care, just slag that thing. (Ok maybe don’t stand in front of it. Unless he wants to.)
B. Get in a car and drive to the area ASAP with Wildfire. Tell Jake to meet you there.
C. Call Anna, make sure she’s okay. Tell her the kids are okay for now…?
D. Punch the wall.
E. Use the time from now until Jake gets here to process all the clues you have and come up with the possible explanation for the creature and the ‘other dimension’ that no Reader has come up with yet which still surprises me.

The Creature reaches the nearest building, and its tentacles whip into the brickwork. It might be trying to destroy it, or perhaps it is digging in...

That sounds great, maybe someone can think up something suitably groan worthy? I joined the discord last night (I've never used discord before).

:siren: YOU

As the Creature tears into the side of a building, beginning to burrow its way inside, frustration builds up inside you until it reaches critical mass. Your fist goes through the wall next to the door, and you look over to see Wildfire staring at you, her muscles tense with the same angry energy.

“I’m heading over there,” you hear yourself say through the buzz of adrenaline in your ears. You jerk your head at Wildfire and she cracks her knuckles as she follows you out the door, Digger watching you go with his mouth open.

You call Jake. “Meet me there.”

You don’t say where ‘there’ is, it’s implied, and you don’t wait for an answer either. Peeling out of the circle drive, you make all haste toward downtown LA. Wildfire turns on the radio.

”Still waiting on newsroom updates from the Mutant Lives Matter protest - police advise all to stay away from the downtown area until further notice. If you are in downtown LA, please shelter in place. Again, stay away from the -”

Wildfire turns the radio off and looks at her phone instead as you whip the car around a corner. Intercept has hooked you up with a live feed, and you’re still getting audio from whatever team members you have left in your earpiece.

You press your foot on the accelerator and gun it through a yellow light, mind racing as you figure out the best way to get where you want to go.

:siren: ANTONIO

Antonio let go of Squib’s arms, hoping that he was stowed in a relatively safe place. Behind the monster seemed like the better place to be, anyway.

“Take this,” said Fade, handing Antonio a metallic ball. “Be careful with it.”

“What -?” Antonio frowned. “I’m already steeled-up, dude, I don’t -”

“It’s his power. Be careful or you’ll blow yourself up!” Fade thrust his chin toward Squib’s pale form on the ground.

“Oh poo poo!”

Antonio held the ball gingerly, feeling his stomach lurch as he looked up at Fade. The other mutant was staring determinedly at the back of the monster.

Crazy plan still on, then? His mouth was dry with fear as the creature continued to move away from them, burrowing into a building.

They were the only two people left standing in the immediate area and before Antonio could decide if he was going to run away or not, Fade reached back and grabbed his arm. The world around them went grey, glimmers of rainbow prisming at the edges of his vision.

He could feel, rather than hear, the Creature screaming again. Glancing down, Antonio could see a trickle of blood coming out of Squib’s ear. Being in Fade’s other dimension seemed to have protected them both from the affects of the screech.

Antonio took a hesitant step forward, breathing unevenly, and then realized that there were more monsters in the area. Hideous beaked and tentacled Things, pulsing with boils and -

He forced his eyes closed, and really did vomit that time.

Fade kept his hand on him. “They can’t touch us,” he said, but his voice shook a bit. “We better hurry the gently caress up.”

Antonio looks down at the bomb in his hands, and back toward the creature. Placing it inside the thing was the plan, but… that was crazy, right?

What does Antonio do?
A. Hurry the gently caress up!
B. Rip his arm away from Fade’s grasp
C. B, plus run away.
D. B, plus throw Squib’s bomb at the Thing’s butt once he’s back in the right dimension
E. Scream, cry, lose his mind
F. Something else: write in

In case you've forgotten who's power is what:

Antonio: Inorganic transformation (He can turn his body into whatever he is touching)
Fade: Steps between dimensions, allowing him to walk through walls, etc. He can take people with him.
Squib: Energy transference (He charges up objects with explosive power, the longer he charges it and the denser an object is, the bigger the boom)
Wildfire: pyrokinesis
Intercept: Technopathy
Digger: he digs good

In case it isn't clear, A means Antonio and Fade are going to shadowstep(? I'm not sure what to call it) inside the creature and place the bomb inside in a sensitive? spot.

So do you mean interdimensionally place it in the butt, or go back to the Real World and then try to get it in the pooper that way?

Well, the latter way is more visually fun and visceral but I think the former is more tactically advantageous (unless all the other shoggoths suddenly become able to touch them). Also, shadowstep sounds good to me from a terminology standpoint. Not entirely accurate but succinct and close enough.

Gonna go for A and what we think is its brain as our target. Do we know what happens if Fade rematerialises inside a solid object?

He has specifically never tried to rematerialize inside of a dense, solid object. Fade assumes it would be very painful? He has experimented with softer items:

Arm in a pillow: pillow tore around his arm, left red marks on his skin where the fabric was suddenly stretched/ripped around it
Hand in jello: jello jumped outward (I hesitate to use the word ‘exploded’) when his hand displaced it.

If Fade was completely inside a wall when he rematerializes, his ability MIGHT project him? The wall would explode, either way.

Antonio in steel form will likely survive being rematerialized inside the creature, if it’s guts are squishy?

You guys can figure out the logistics, I just want us to save the world via BUTTSAUCE.

Because everyone will be coated in it afterward, and a name shall be needed.

Plague Inc. shall also have a race to see who kill us with it first. Because humans.

Antonio: Inorganic transformation (He can turn his body into whatever he is touching). Spicy Latino fellow, not as spicy as Hot Sauce though.
Fade: Steps between dimensions, allowing him to walk through walls, etc. He can take people with him. Is now clearly a conduit to the Lovecraft Dimension
Squib: Energy transference (He charges up objects with explosive power, the longer he charges it and the denser an object is, the bigger the boom). Has DJ Qualls' adorable nose bulb, great fun at parties.
Wildfire: pyrokinesis
Intercept: Technopathy.
Digger: he digs good. Has a mild BO problem.

Thanks for the repost!

I will work on a more complete list of who’s who, soon.

Edit: https://mutants-uprising.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Characters

This is not a complete list of characters yet, but everything in it is accurate

I can create an in-thread list as well, if you want.

Yes.

Incidentally, from the old thread, the only backstory we have on her:

quote:

She was always a strange child - more of a loner than anything else. She didn’t like reading for school, and certainly not for fun, and would spend her time outside if at all possible. There weren’t many trees on her block, but she’d climbed all of them, and in the empty lot a few streets over she’d lit her first match at the age of seven.

It was curiosity, mostly, that had driven her to steal the matchbook from the kitchen drawer, but as little Lataya looked at the flame flickering between her fingers, something woke inside her. She burned every match that day, making a tiny bonfire out of twigs in the middle of a pile of gravel, and burnt one of her fingers in the process. There was still a tiny scar there, in the middle of the pad of her middle finger, a reminder of the object of her adoration.

She was careful. If her parents had caught her playing with fire, she would have been spanked, so she was never caught. Lataya burned all sorts of things on the vacant lot, from abandoned stuffed animals to old books, but always carefully. Don’t catch buildings on fire. If she burned a house… just imagine how glorious it would look, the flame licking at the window glass as smoke billowed out of the eaves… but then she would get caught. Mustn’t get caught.

When she was fourteen she grew tall and awkward, still a loner, but teased relentlessly at school as she went between classes. Sometimes she dreamed of setting the homes of her tormentors ablaze, laughing as they ran out the doors with fire on their heels. She never really developed a feminine body, remaining too flat and skinny for boys to like, but still pretty enough for girls to hate. Lataya didn’t really mind, except for the teasing. All she cared about was her fire, and then one day she created her own fire.

She’d been walking through the highschool parking lot, avoiding the upperclassmen as she ducked between cars, and she’d come across the school queen bee’s Jeep. A moment of anger later the vehicle was coated in flames, tires melting to the asphalt, and Lataya ran away. She never went back to school, skipping classes to play with her new ability until she could control it. Mustn’t get caught.

She joined the local gang when a boy finally paid attention to her, and hung off his arm while he did gangsta poo poo. When he pushed for a more physical relationship Lataya gave in, and regretted it, but for a while they were happy enough. No one messed with the gang, and she finally told them her secret. She was a mutant, and she could create and shape fire. Her boyfriend was so excited, and their leader was thrilled, and for a time Lataya felt that she could finally be herself.

After a few months, though, she found that she was being used more and more, just for her ability. She grew distant and defensive with her boyfriend, and when she snapped at him she saw real fear in his eyes. Lataya left the gang, left her boyfriend, and moved on. She lived the next few years on her own, checking in on her real family from time to time, but never letting them know her secret. She worked fast food jobs, her bad attitude often getting her fired, but then she’d just move on to the next minimum wage job.

Sometimes she lived on the street, and sometimes she lived in apartments with roommates who were little more than friendly strangers. And then one day she got a text message on her phone.

I know you’re searching for purpose, Lataya. I’ve been watching you practice your ability, and I think we can help each other.

She frowned, instantly angry at this intrusion and implied stalking. Her fingers flew over the phone. Who is this? The gently caress you doing watching me? Creep!

Not a creep, a fellow mutant. I can see everything the cameras in the city record. You’ve been careful, but not careful enough. I’ve been erasing you from where you’ve been caught on camera.

A fellow freak then? Keep your freaky rear end self out of my business

I’ve gotten off on the wrong foot. Sorry, mysterious messages aren’t what I’m good at. I’m starting a cell of the Brotherhood here in LA. I’d like to offer you a place with us.

Lataya stared at her phone. Another gang, but one of mutants? And she could gently caress up a lot of bad people for them.

We can make a difference for other mutants, make sure they don’t have to suffer like we have. Or make those who work against us… regret it. What do you say? Interested?

Yeah I guess.

Good to hear. What should we call you?

A smile curved her lips as she texted: Wildfire.

Antonio gritted his teeth and nodded at Fade. “Let’s go.”

It took a moment to coordinate so they didn’t accidentally separate, but they run into the huge creature. Inside it’s dark. Very dark.

“Are we in the butt or the head?” Antonio asked, a note of panic in his voice. They were holding hands, and he had to concentrate so as not to accidentally squash Fade’s hand with his own, metal hand.

“Does it matter? Let go of that thing, it’s gonna go off any second now!”

Oh poo poo! How long would these things stay without exploding once Squib let go of them? Antonio released the charged up metal ball as soon as his brain processed Fade’s words.

It reverted into the real world as soon as he let go of it, or at least, he thought it did. Fade pulled his arm, and Antonio followed him out into the greyscale world outside of the creature’s body.

”... the creature just… exploded!”

You nearly drive into the cars in front of you as Wildfire tilts her phone toward you so you can see the newscast.

“Intercept, I need a report on our people!”

”Just a second, boss.” Intercept’s voice is in your earpiece. ”It’s a mess down there. Wait, Antonio has just come back to Squib’s position. Looks like he’s picked Squib up and they’re moving down the street. It’s… it’s a mess.”

He seems at a loss for words.

You stop the car at a red light, and glare at the traffic in front of you. There are roads closed all around the area you are trying to get to, and the freeway is jammed up.

What route do you take?
A. The freeway. I will drive on the shoulder and pass the traffic.
B. Side roads. Intercept will find me an optimal route. Slower, but safe.
C. B, but Intercept will also hack the traffic lights so I have all green lights! He will be partially distracted from keeping tabs on the team on the ground.
D. Steal a helicopter, learn how to drive one or kidnap the pilot and then - just kidding, you can’t do that. SOMETHING ELSE: WRITE IN
