https://www.youtube.com/c/JohnsBasement is another pretty great retro computer building channel. His recent series on building a Z80 computer is pretty enjoyable. A little dry, but he does a great job walking through his process and helping you understand things.

never saw this guy mentioned yet but look mum no computer is a great channel for audio tinkering. he’s a huge goof and doesn’t get TOO technical, in his latest series he rescued an old church organ and hooked it up to a midi controller. great for kids too (my 9yr old loves him)

He got that thing right before i unsubscribed from him, but i remember that he pitched it on his channel as a "community project" to try and justify the purchase with his patreon bucks. then he bought a bunch of rural land and had videos where he was helping "a friend" with their farm, but it was very clearly a lie to obfuscate what he was spending patreon money on lol

Destin has new video about the irrigation pivots, the things responsible for those green circles you see from the air: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7j1lMs7fcIQ

Pretty cool. I like how mechanical the control of each section is. I'd probably come up with some overcomplicated monstrosity that measured the wheel rotations and adjusted for the distance from the pivot etc.

In the video they specifically state that the crops grow without the irrigators, but running the irrigators significantly increases their yields per acre, to the point that the irrigator pays itself off in a few years

yea this stuff rocks. when i was a teenager. my high school auto teacher taught us about it and helped us rebuild a small block chevy motor into a over square stroke ratio.

for the price of a crankshaft and cam. we basically had the cheapest and meanest little rat rod pickup truck any teenager should ever have access to.

Haven't watched EEVblog in a while. Other than the voice the only objectionable thing about his video is the occasional casual racism which is definitely problematic, though I don't think it's like a nazi thing as much as like australian boomer thing.

I used to like his repair and dumpster diving videos, there aren't many of those since covid it seems, but there's a pretty fun one where his solar analytics module blew up in a pretty spectacular fashion. Unfortunately he doesn't try to repair it.

:hmmyes: I've never done more than intro level college math so his videos have been extremely helpful whenever I had to look into a concept I wasn't familiar with, which is a lot of concepts.

He is a very good mathematics educator. The thing I sometimes wonder about is what the limitations are of his approach. He usually stays in an applied mathematics kind of area where it's possible to build reasonably compelling visualizations, and he likes doing detailed videos about interesting results and topics where there's a lot of rewarding detail to go into. But there are huge areas of mathematics which are much more abstract and difficult to bring to life in that way. Number theory, for example.

Anyway he's also cool (timestamped link):
