This episode making it clear that Yuu's sister is way more the audience surrogate than Maki lol

Lol, I can't speak for how Nakatani intended us to read Rei (besides 'cool sister'), but interestingly enough there was an interview a while back, well before the anime, where she was specifically asked about the idea of Maki as an audience-insert and said that wasn't what she was going for - although she totally gets the idea in retrospect. Her idea with Maki was always to provide a thoroughly aromantic character to act as a foil to Yuu's own feelings - someone with similar but distinct feelings to her who could help Yuu parse what she is or isn't feeling for Touko.

Not to say that this is definitively how anyone should read the character, of course, just something I thought was interesting.

Reddit translated a recent interview with Nakatani and her editor, Kusunoki. Lots of good stuff in here, even if the translation's pretty rough. There are technically a couple of manga images from past where the anime's gotten, but the text isn't translated and there's nothing obviously spoilery happening, so anime-only people should be good.

Hey, funfact, 'do you wanna go out' is recced in this interview and my scanlation group is, well, scanlating that. Things are a little slow due to difficulty getting raws (read: our source for it is terrible at chapter numbers) but what we do have up is really good, so I thought I'd promote it.

Nice little episode today, although it feels like the adaptation has maybe gotten a bit conservative in the last couple of eps. Should finish volume 4 next week, and then do at least part of volume 5 before we finish up in episode 13. Hope the team's saved some gas to give us a few last animation highlights before we say goodbye, been a really lovely adaptation.

Strong Sayaka face game

Spiritus Nox

Absolute knockout episode today, the whole back half is some of the best material the show's had all season. Smart use of some light original material, too. This episode tells you just a little bit more about the play than you learn in the manga, with you actually getting to see the scene with Touko's character choosing to become Sayaka's char's girlfriend. The bit with Yuu running over to Koyomi's house and thinking about how badly she wants Touko not to hate herself is original too.

Anyway, this brings us to the end of volume 4, so I expect we'll cover the first two chapters of volume 5 for our finale next week. Look forward to it, the show's got an opportunity to end on a real highlight, both visually and emotionally. Gonna miss this show when it's over. Wish only for Yuu's happiness and Season 2.

Spiritus Nox posted:

Yuu promising Touko 'I can't fall in love with you' instead of 'I won't fall in love with you' is fairly inconsistent with what we've seen of her inner feelings to this point, to say nothing of what comes later IMO - and a more critical error is in the post-credits, where Touko says "If Yuu were ever to change, I wouldn't love her any more" instead of doing what every manga TL I've ever seen does and translating it as "If I were ever to change, people would stop loving me." Really incensed at that one tbh - where the manga TL emphasizes that Touko, on a fundamental level, does not see herself as worth loving and is terrified of accidentally driving Yuu away, the HiDive subs make it look like she's some creepy posessive weirdo who's conciously, deliberately attempting to ensnare Yuu somehow - reflects awfully on her as a character based solely on a stupid subject change.

Hey Spiritus Nox, thanks for this comment! I just sort of binged through the series and was checking to see what the thread said about it.

It's really too bad that the fan subbers dropped the ball on that line, it really twists Touko's character around until the finale episodes where they make Touko's opinion of herself and her relationship more explicit. I was going through the material at that point with anxiety that it was Touko's intention to leave/grow bored with Yuu if she 'fell in love' with her. Revealing Touko's anxieties about her self worth and social performance is extremely important at that scene. I'm really happy that the stakes are less high, because Yuu's reactions and actions make more sense in this context.

That was a great show, I loved how expressive all the characters were.

Putting up that blank wish was a wonderful scene imo.

And we're done. What a good drat adaptation. Made this stopping point work pretty well as a finale, too, in the event we don't get any more. The bit with Yuu and Touko improv-practicing a bit of the play was anime-original and hinted at a few things the story ultimately intends to do with the play, good way to showcase the two's growth and what their happy ending might look like even if they haven't gotten there quite yet.

Anyway I loved this show a lot. In a perfect world it would have gotten a bit more lavish animation than it got, but it had some pretty good moments as it was alongside consistently great storyboards, good art, some of the best acting I've heard all year, and consistently smart adaptation decisions. Always got the impression that the people making it had a lot of affection for the source material. My AOTY by a comfortable margin. Hope we get more soon.

I see where you're coming from, but I don't think the person who made the poll (they identify as aromantic) intended anything malicious, they just wanted to get a read on people's thoughts as the poll just consists of "do you identify as aromantic/gray aromantic? Did you see the character Yuu as aromantic/gray aromantic? and Did you see any discussion as the show aired on the topic of aromanticism?"

Also for the record they agree with you

Personally I thought the final episode was a huge disappointment. We never get an answer or even a hint of what Touko end up choosing to do. It would be fine typically if the manga was still on-going, but I believe the last issue is on its way so we know for sure there won't be a second season. I don't know if I missed something but I didn't see any indication that Yuu's (2nd?) attempt to change Touko would succeed or fail.

I tried to do the poll but just ended up confused on if I'm aromantic or not and if so what type and gave up.

FYI, we very much do not know this for sure. Nakatani has been pretty forward on twitter and in interviews about her hopes that the show sells well enough to earn one, and every impression I've gotten from the staff is that there's enough affection for the property to fuel a second season. Only questions are whether the numbers make sense for Troyca (or somebody else, I suppose) to pick it up and when/whether Nakatani will have the story written out enough for the staff to reach the ending - and frankly the way the manga's plot has been shaping up lately combined with how Nakatani's discussed it in recent interviews leave me thinking she's already got the story basically written to completion. Season 2 is absolutely possible.

The anime covered 24 chapters, the manga is on 36 and it doesn't feel that close to ending. It'll probably come in at about the right length for another season.

Spiritus Nox
Sep 2, 2011

Yeah. We covered 4 volumes and a little change, and I'm kind of expecting the manga to wrap up - or at least hit a pretty natural stopping point - by the end of volume 8. Fits nicely.

its been ranking okay in terms of bd sales. in the 3000/4000 range which isn't blowing the roof off but makes it one of the better selling things from this season, though it isn't close to competing with gridman and zombieland which are the big hits this season. bd sales are just one metric, and an imperfect one at that, but the show's doing reasonably well.

Aw sweet, they managed to use Suki, Igai no Kotoba de as an insert song. Ended pretty much where I expected it to end, but it was still pretty satisfying. Here's to season 2!

Edit: sneaky final line about having to change trains too. Smooth.

Someone did a snazzy mashup of Hectopascal and Suki. It's not bad.
