:siren::siren::siren:THERE WILL BE NO SPOILER TAGS FOR LIFE IS STRANGE 1 AND LIFE IS STRANGE: BEFORE THE STORM HERE, IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED FOR LIFE IS STRANGE GTFO:siren::siren::siren:

Previously on Life is Strange...

Super-Mega hipster Max Caufield packs up her Polaroid camera and moves back to her Childhood home of Arcadia Bay to attend the mega-expensive, yuppie, Blackwell Academy for her senior year of High School. Here she rekindles her lost friendship with her Childhood BFF Chloe Price, who's dad totally died in a car crash and Max has been a really lovely friend to for over half a decade. She must balance her renewed friendship (and possibly budding Romance????) with Chloe while uncovering a tangled mystery revolving around Chloe's missing friend Rachel Amber that reveals not everything is as pristine as it seems on the surface in sleepy Twin Peaks Arcadia Bay.

Oh did I mention that Max has magical time control powers? Because she has magical time control powers.

Previously, before that on Life is Strange: Before the Storm...

Super-Mega ball-of-angst Chloe Price is an extremely pissed off teenager because a multitude of reasons. Her dad has died, her best friend (Max Caufield!) has moved a state away and ignores all of her texts, and her mother is dating a lovely MAGA chode named David Madsen. After getting into a fight with a bunch of punks in a literal heroin den, she befriends goody two-shoes, pristine, and popular girl Rachel Amber, whom she knows from her mega-expensive, yuppie, High School; Blackwell Academy. She must balance her new friendship (and possibly budding Romance????) with Rachel while uncovering a tangled mystery revolving around Rachel's lovely dad that reveals not everything is as pristine as it seems on the surface in Rachel's perfect family life.

Oh did I mention that... wait, no that was it, I didn't forget anything this time. I mentioned Chloe's dad was dead, right?

So what does that have to do with Life is Strange 2?

Probably not all that much! :v:

Oh gently caress me, I forgot something.

Previously, after those first two things but before Life is Strange 2...

Chris is a 9 year old boy with an abusive alcoholic father who's wife has recently died and is struggling to deal with the aftermath. You spend a day at home with your father, falling into Chris's imagination, assuming his persona of Captain Spirit! A super hero who can do anything, except fix Chris' broken, angry dad.

The prequel is short (1-2 hours) and introduces us to the new, more open mechanics of LiS 2. Its not Skyrim by any means, but it seems environments will be more open and there will be goals/progress that can be made in any order or skipped all together. It also briefly introduces us to the main characters of LIS2 and the events and decisions of the game feed into the sequel in some capacity.

Finally, I can talk about this new game

LiS2 is a telltale-style adventure game where you assume the role of Sean Diaz, as he makes his way from Seattle to his eventual goal of Mexico, all while escorting his younger brother, Daniel. The two are forced to flee their home after a terrible incident tears apart their family, and leaves Daniel a target of Law Enforcement. Daniel must protect his brother, and himself, while struggling with being on his own for the first time in his life.

Characters

Sean Diaz (left) and Daniel Diaz (right)

Brothers forced to leave home after a terrible event leaves them without protection and as a target of Law Enforcement. During their trek across the American West Coast they will have to rely on eachother to get by.

Also Sean might be Jean Gray from the X-Men...

More characters to come!

In regards to the aforementioned powers there seems to be some hints that Daniel is actually the one with the powers rather than Sean. How you act around Daniel throughout the game will also have a direct influence on the direction his character ultimately goes in. Finally, it seems like Captain Spirit actually chronologically takes place sometime during LiS 2 as opposed to before.

It's nice at least to get some more male characters in this series that aren't complete assholes or at least vaguely creepy in some way. Though to be fair the only ones who really fall into that category are Jefferson, James, Damon, Sean Prescott, David, Charles(Chris' dad), Nathan (though all three of those at least display some kind of redeeming quality), Eliot, and Wells. The remaining male characters aren't that bad though (even Warren to be honest).

Though once again I'm curious how they're going to maintain a consistent cast of supporting characters when the protagonists are constantly moving around from place to place (so far we've got Sean's friend Lyla, the bully kid who kicked off this whole mess, two unnamed bearded guys and eventually Chris again).

So far as living semi-major characters go the exceptions to that rule have mostly just been Samuel, The North family, Frank (though he did sell rape drugs to teenagers and pursued a romantic relationship with a minor), and to an extent Warren. The original Daniel, Mr. Keaton, Justin and Hayden weren't bad either.

Exactly why I changed the post. Though to be fair to Samuel he's weird but also fairly harmless for the most part (and he either has some form of precognition or is just really good at reading people because he seems to know a hell of a lot more than he reasonably should). Hell, if you want to bring up the squirrel thing you should also remember that Max herself talks to just about everything (including inanimate objects).

Off the subject but I also find it kind of funny that the entire Price family has called Principal Wells out on his bullshit at least once (William in Farewell via email, Joyce during the meeting at the start of Episode 2 and Chloe in BtS Episode 1, 2, and indirectly in LiS Episode 1).

Fun Fact: The timeframe each previous LiS game takes place over directly corresponds to the number of episodes it has. The original was 5 episodes and took place over the course of 5 days (not counting time travel shenanigans of course), BtS had 4 episodes counting Farewell and the main game takes place over the course of 3 days (plus the night at the mill the game begins on) and Captain Spirit was a one-shot that took place over the course of a single day.

Hell, there's already evidence that the first episode alone will go through the span of a few weeks at the very least (Daniel mentions in one of the promos that they've been walking for days).

There's also the fact that Captain Spirit clearly takes place at least a month or two after LiS 2 begins (at the start of the gameplay video it's close to Halloween and the boys are living in Seattle but in CS they're now in Oregon, there's snow on the ground and Chris and his dad are talking about getting a Christmas tree). Plus they're heading from Seattle to Mexico mostly on foot, that's bound to take a while anyway.

As many of you probably already know, Telltale games, publisher of the Walking Dead series, which is the series of games that Life is Strange was basically structured after, is now going under. They just laid off 90% of their staff, and the fate of the Walking Dead season 4 is uncertain. Episode 1 is already out, Episode 2 was due out 4 days from now.

As Telltale and Dontnod are the only companies in the world making this type of games, I find it to be quite sad that Telltale is going under. It looks like they made a bunch of bad business decisions and screwed themselves.

It would be nice if Dontnod or Square Enix could buy whatever's left of Telltale, the rights to their games or whatever would be worth buying. Deck Nine, the creators of Before the Storm, are looking for more games to create, and Telltale has a bunch of already established games they could continue.

In happier news that was buried with the closure of Telltale, Deck Nine announced today that they're working on another project with Square Enix. Life is Strange is one of the few western IPs that has been an unequivocal success for SE so it would be cool if they continued expanding their mid-budget narrative adventure game offerings.

Larryb
Oct 5, 2010

Again, it's not confirmed that the new project necessarily has anything to do with Life is Strange but they have expressed interest in working with the series again so it's still entirely possible. They really seem to be trying to turn this into a franchise as of late which as long as the games remain decent I'm personally fine with (I do kind of wonder if that web series they talked about a long while back will ever get off the ground though).

If it is LiS related, I imagine it's probably not going to happen until sometime after LiS 2 so as not to step on Dontnod's toes. Either way, I'm looking forward to hearing more about this. Besides some of the obvious choices (Frank, Rachel, Max in Seattle) it's also possible that it could be a direct sequel as well taking place in the 3 year gap between Seasons 1 and 2 (which would also possibly give Max a chance to interact with some of the BtS cast as well as find out what they've been up to lately). Though then again that might be a little redundant since we've technically got the upcoming comics for that.

The rumor is that it's a unique IP that Deck Nine pitched to Square before they got handed Before the Storm, but that's nothing except hearsay on reddit atm.

My feeling is that if it's another Life is Strange, we won't be hearing about it until Season 2 is almost over anyway.

So based on reports from people who played the demo back at Gamescom a little while back apparently the collectable gimmick this time is drawing sketches but the process seems to be a bit more complex.

As I understand it, when you encounter something to draw you have to hold down the A or X button depending on your version to observe the scene around you until things come into focus (kind of like photo diving in the first game) the more you look around the area beforehand the more detail you'll be able to capture, once things are in focus then you can look down at Sean's sketchbook and start drawing. I believe you can start drawing without focusing but the end result just won't come out as good.

To be honest I don't think Max is really going to be that much better (look at her face as they're driving through town at the start of the Bae ending, the poor girl is practically dead inside). The only consolation is they now have each other to lean on now but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some lingering resentment on Chloe's end though (her mom is presumably dead along with possibly all her other friends and it's at least partially Max's fault).

Plus there's the fact that Max still has family and friends back in Seattle but in Chloe's case pretty much all she has left now is Max and her truck.

I've said it before but it regards to the comics themselves presuming they wind up being decent I actually wouldn't mind this getting expanded into a full monthly series. There's a lot of stories you could tell regarding this universe that might not necessarily work that well as a game.

There's a brief plot description of the comic there as well:

Issue 1:

quote:

The sequel story fans thought they would never see! This all-new emotional roller coaster stars fan-favorites Max and Chloe, and picks up after the critically-acclaimed game! Torn between universes, can a splintered Max reckon with the sins of Arcadia past... and is there any future for Max and Chloe when time itself is against them?

Issue 2:

quote:

Return to the world of DONTNOD's smash-hit video game Life is Strange, in the official sequel story fans thought they would never get to see! One year since the game's shocking ending, fan-favorite duo Max and Chloe run headlong into an emotional roller coaster! Max promised to bury her time-twisting powers - but as storm clouds gather, it's a promise she can't keep!

Sounds interesting enough to me.

At first it seems like he's taking a page out of Warren's book but hopefully there'll be opportunity to work on his game and maybe even hook up with and bone some hot chica on the road. Related to that, did some people get this early somehow? I'm already seeing some gameplay videos online (though nobody's gone any further than the point where the gameplay video from a while back ended).

I will say this at least, the gameplay footage we've seen up to the point where their dad dies and (presumably) Daniel suddenly becomes Jean Gray? That's just the intro, it immediately cuts to the standard disclaimer at the start of most LiS games after that. So it looks like the episodes may possibly be a little longer this time around (which I'm personally ok with).

Yeah, it's got some big shoes to fill but what I've seen so far seems pretty decent. Lyla is probably my favorite character so far (though whether we'll ever see her again outside of maybe text messages once the boys leave Seattle remains to be seen), Sean seems to have shades of both Max and Chloe mixed into him and as far as kid characters go Daniel doesn't seem that bad all things considered.

But yeah, despite some misgivings I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with this (and more importantly, whether they'll actually be able to end things well this time around as so far slightly disappointing finales seem to be a common element in LiS games).

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like a few of the acheivement names in Episode 2 ones suggest that will be the episode featuring Arcadia Bay? They they seem to be references to the original cast. Sounds about right since the boys are already in Oregon by the time Captain Spirit takes place around and according to the datamine they'll apparently be staying at a hotel in Arcadia Bay and somewhere along the line there's a voiced cameo from either Max and Warren or Max and Chloe depending on your ending choice (which would imply that Ashly Burch and Hannah Telle will be back for this, even if it's just briefly). I kind of doubt we're going to actually run into any old friends there though, and if we do they're probably not going to be that important.

Speaking of Captain Spirit, I still wonder how they're going to handle Chris in this game (that is, whether he'll just be a pit stop on their journey or play some kind of major role in the plot going forward). Since they gave him his own game and there's still some stuff regarding his family that hasn't been explored fully I'm betting on the latter.

I'm also kind of curious about Episode 4 as all the achievement names for that particular chapter seem to have something to do with religion. Additionally, the final one for the episode is called Chiaroscuro, which is a photography term that was brought up in the first game. "She-Wolf" in Episode 5 might imply that they run into their mom at some point as well.

Choice seems to matter a lot more in this game too as not only will your decisions shape Daniel's character apparently there are flat out multiple branching story paths depending on said choices. Not clear just how involved those paths will be but it sounds interesting none the less (also like was the case in BtS, the lack of a Rewind power means no takebacks this time around).

Reading the comments that appears to be the case (and in some places it could be as early as tomorrow morning), also the countdown timer on my PS4 version currently says 1 day and 50 minutes. My guess is either Steam is on a different schedule or just hasn't been updated yet.

Slightly off the subject but I'm not sure if the remaining 4 episode titles have been released yet but based on the first one (Roads) and the general premise I'm going to guess the naming gimmick this time around is based around travel (kind of like how all of Life is Strange's episode titles loosely had something to do with time or a timed process and the ones from Before the Storm were all lines from The Tempest).

Like the first game took inspiration from Twin Peaks, Donnie Darko, The Butterfly Effect, Catcher in the Rye and probably others as well while Before the Storm seems mostly based on Fire Walk With Me it seems like the main influences for Season 2 are Of Mice and Men and the movie Into the Wild (which kind of worries me a little since neither one of those end well for the protagonists, also the fact that this is noted Misery Simulator Life is Strange, it doesn't really do happy endings). If that's the case, I may already have an inkling of what the final choice this time around is going to be.

I will just make one quick note though it's confirmed now that Daniel is the one with the powers rather than Sean and it's looking like the Captain Spirit/Season 1 nods won't really come until Episode 2 (there's snow on the ground in the preview and some of the achievements for said episode directly reference Max, Chloe and Rachel).
