September is winding down, fall has officially begun, the nights are getting longer and the air is colder...The leaves are turning, which means I'm turning...on my PS2 to play classic horror games! And other consoles.

Last year I played Siren 1 which wound up being one of my all time favorite games, and I played RE7, the first RE game I ever finished which led me on a long journey of playing through every RE game ever except Umbrella Corps and Operation Raccoon City

Some games I'd like to play this October:

Silent Hill 4: The Room - the last SH I have any interest in trying

Siren 2 - ordered a bunch of homebrew hardware to get this thing running on my PS2 bc it's unemulatable and only ever came out in Europe

REmake - this was on sale on pc for like 5 bucks recently so I wanted to try out the randomizer mod

RE4 - I have a professsional file on Chapter 3 that i need to finish, I stopped bc the texture overhaul mod was about to come out but it was like 60 gigs so I never installed it

Maybe I'll play that Rondo rerelease, or replay OoE or something as well. Or try to play Eternal Darkness on Dolphin since I never played it and I always wanted to. This is the best time of the year!!! I wish people still made good scary games!! Only 4 more months to RE2make as well.

In terms of non-spooky games I'll still be playing DQXI probably, and definitely Red Dead 2 and Fist of the North Star when they come out, but I should probably finally play RE7 and maybe Alien Isolation for spookyfeels.

For spooky games I’m playing The Evil Within which I never played and the first 30 mins is amazing and has great graphics and the shadows and camera and lighting. It’s fantastic. Can’t believe I never played it!

I hated the way textures popped in in TEW, I thought it was so jarring

I need to finish The Evil Within 2 that I bought and I'm also going to pick up Siren soon. I heard there's some really obtuse stuff in that game that you'd never figure out on your own, was that your experience IT?

I should try and play through the Fatal Frame trilogy like I planned to do last year.

Siren 2 is really good but it gets rid of a lot of the jank so it’s a better game gameplay wise but less charming and unique overall. Still very ambitious and good horror game.

Theres a handful of missions, maybe 2 or 3, with such hosed up puzzle solutions or alternate ending requirements that I had to look them up, but that stuff doesn't start mattering until the second half of the game once you have to start playing the alternate timelines

Like the school mission where you have to tell the girl you're escorting to hide in the Classroom 2-B locker for 45 seconds bc it adds a candle to her inventory that she can use in a mission 5 hours later.

Kongming
Aug 30, 2005

You forgot to mention that if you fail after the checkpoint the candles disappear from her inventory once you restart so you need to clear the whole mission in one go.

I think I’ve posted this in the last 2 of these threads but for spooky gaming I’m going to try to finally get into Darkest Dungeon and Alien: Isolation, both of which I really liked when I tried them out but never really sat down and worked on them before. Might give SOMA a shot too.

There’s a lot of good non-spooky stuff coming out though, RDR 2, Soul Calibur 6, and the Fist of the North Star Yakuza game being just the first ones I can think of off the top of my head. I’ve told myself I won’t buy new games until I’ve beaten a ton of my backlogs but I’m probably going to crack for at least one of those.

Godly month ahead

I don’t like horror games but animal crossing is good fall gaming imo.

I guess I’ll keep crawling through dqxi. Work and life has been kinda hectic since September so gaming has been a challenge.

I think you'd like the combat but hate the mission structure , it becomes very repetitive and gamey. The battle system is great though and reminds me of a more refined Etrian Odyssey with a focus on lineup positioning and skill synergy across classes

I started playing Hollow Knight and it's getting pretty gross and creepy

edit: also the way the game spreads out save/fast travel points and makes you work to get an area map is well-paced and adds a lot of tension. There's a couple times now I've gone really far in one direction and just gone deeper and deeper as the enemies get harder and the settings get weirder and wondered how I'm supposed to find my way out. Does a great job giving you that "I'm not supppsed to be here" feeling that I got from, like, the Upper Cathedral Ward in Bloodborne

its really really good and then falls off near the end where the encounters are full of bullshit, but i liked the battle system a lot

I want to play Castlevania IV on my SNES classic to start things off.

If I'm still feeling CV, then I'll play SOTN or maybe Rondo when they come out.

Never played Evil Within but I think I would like them.

Silent Hill 2 is so good and does such a good job using audio just to unsettle you not jumpscare yo or whatever. I remember going into one room and there's just what sound like chopping blades constantly in it.

Planning to finally play the new Prey and Alien Isolation over the autumn/winter, and finish the last of us on grounded. Going to finally finish the banner saga too.

Silent Hill series in general does really sick stuff with the fixed camera. It's gutwrenching going into a new area with the camera like on the floor zoomed close in on your character and you can't see what you're actually walking towards
