September is winding down, fall has officially begun, the nights are getting longer and the air is colder...The leaves are turning, which means I'm turning...on my PS2 to play classic horror games! And other consoles.

Last year I played Siren 1 which wound up being one of my all time favorite games, and I played RE7, the first RE game I ever finished which led me on a long journey of playing through every RE game ever except Umbrella Corps and Operation Raccoon City

Some games I'd like to play this October:

Silent Hill 4: The Room - the last SH I have any interest in trying

Siren 2 - ordered a bunch of homebrew hardware to get this thing running on my PS2 bc it's unemulatable and only ever came out in Europe

REmake - this was on sale on pc for like 5 bucks recently so I wanted to try out the randomizer mod

RE4 - I have a professsional file on Chapter 3 that i need to finish, I stopped bc the texture overhaul mod was about to come out but it was like 60 gigs so I never installed it

Maybe I'll play that Rondo rerelease, or replay OoE or something as well. Or try to play Eternal Darkness on Dolphin since I never played it and I always wanted to. This is the best time of the year!!! I wish people still made good scary games!! Only 4 more months to RE2make as well.

I hated the way textures popped in in TEW, I thought it was so jarring

I need to finish The Evil Within 2 that I bought and I'm also going to pick up Siren soon. I heard there's some really obtuse stuff in that game that you'd never figure out on your own, was that your experience IT?

Theres a handful of missions, maybe 2 or 3, with such hosed up puzzle solutions or alternate ending requirements that I had to look them up, but that stuff doesn't start mattering until the second half of the game once you have to start playing the alternate timelines

Like the school mission where you have to tell the girl you're escorting to hide in the Classroom 2-B locker for 45 seconds bc it adds a candle to her inventory that she can use in a mission 5 hours later.

You forgot to mention that if you fail after the checkpoint the candles disappear from her inventory once you restart so you need to clear the whole mission in one go.

God... the school sucks

I've already jump-started my October gaming with some classic Silent Hill for the Playstation. I also will try and fail, yet again, to play Silent Hill 2. It's a tradition at this point. I will probably never get to experience that game, I just can't handle it for longer that 15 minutes at a time, six months apart. The other October game I've got lined up is my first playthrough of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. I've also started work on my annual Halloween October Movie Marathon Madness list.

I hope someday you're strong enough to get through SH2...it's one of the all time greatest

Speaking of silent hill I decided my first scary game was gonna be Silent Hill 4: The Room, and my component cables arrived yesterday. I only just started, I'll report back soon.

I really love the setting and structure of SH4 but judging from the first dreamzone, which is like 80% reused assets from the SH3 subway station filled with invincible ghosts that follow you around and just do damage by being in the same room as you, the game is gonna really piss me off I think. it pisses me off double already bc the idea is so cool but the actual execution is bunk. maybe it gets better, since they're not beholden to any logical town design or anything. They don't need another pier, amusement park and hospital. Dreams can be anything!

I think the ghosts are actually the most effective part of 4 because they're always a threat and they can appear anywhere at anytime, so it makes the whole game more tense because there are no safe areas. I still don't like Silent Hill 4 overall, but it's good at making the player feel like they're in constant danger.

It's true, but I like horror games with cadence. Like entering a room and not knowing if it's going to be safe or not. In the subway level I played I just had to run constantly and never look at anything for too long bc of the ghosts, which is a different kind of nerve wracking I suppose. At least they realized that combat in the previous games was lame and that everybody ran past everything anyway and made a mechanic out of it

SH4 Update: I've been enjoying so far but, it definitely is a supremely halfassed game. There's no puzzles, all the combat is as easy as it ever was even though they went through the trouble of putting in a stamina bar and on-screen health indicators. The atmosphere is great even if the cutscenes are super corny. Returning to the room and being on edge about the subtle changes or potential hauntings is still cool. Having to replay every level halfway through the game with an escort when they were already kinda boring the first time is killing my buzz. I'll probably finish it bc it can't be that long but definitely a disappointment after how much I loved the first 2ish hours.

I set up the REmake randomizer this weekend so it's ready to go after I finish SH4 and it seems loving awesome. There's also a Door Randomizer option in it that seems to powerful.

This game sucks. It isn't even scary any more, it's just tedious upkeep you have to keep doing to keep your apartment clean, and all the enemies look stupid and now I'm being chased by a Matrix guy who dual wields pistols through levels where I have walk everywhere or else my escort can't keep up.

my favorite part of SH4 was the comically long hospital hallway where each patient room is just a different manga panel basically. Or a haunted house. A bunch of vaguely gross unrelated bodies, and the Eileen head which was cool

Was there a giant head in SH2 too?

the head is the only thing i ever really see mentioned from 4

When I ran into it I instantly remembered seeing the image in gaming magazines bc it was the definitely a huge selling point. Which is funny bc it's entirely optional and there's no sound emanating from it or anything, it's just a giant head in a room

Lol

Tactics
  • The head appears in a room in the 2nd floor hallway that is randomized with every playthrough.
  • If the player enters the room, the camera will only show Henry and the door he entered. If the player hears breathing, they're in the same room as the head.
  • As long as the player doesn't move further into the room and instead exits, they won't have to encounter the head.
  • It is a good idea to mark where the head is so the player doesn't enter the same room accidentially.

RE is high pace, raw thrills and pure chills...can recommend that. I also love Siren but that's a game largely made up of "bullshit" in a sense, but it's what I love about, since it's unapologetically offputting and a chore to even approach, let alone try to see through to completion

Yeah RE4 is just a action game. It's also one of the best games ever made but it's just schlocky and not trying to scare you.
