If I fail the skill checks after the Ancient Tomb is an event going to pop up to put me back on Tartuccio's trail (as the journal entry suggests will happen), or do I have to manually stumble onto it by going to the Old Sycamore without cause?

You need to explore some of the areas around that part of the region to run into him and find out that he's going there, iirc. I forget which one but I think it can't appear until you do the tomb so just check if there's any new ones around there

I did the fog questline first this time, then the tomb where I lost the trail, and have since been tooling around murdering slavers and overlarge boars. Old Sycamore is on my map but I have no *narrative* reason to go there afaik.

There's also been some nightmares and a drowned man but that seems connected to the Stag Lord situation rather than Tartuccio. I didn't stay to chat with it, or respond well to its threats.

I've done the section before but I passed the skill checks to find it last time.

That's not on my map so I guess I'm supposed to stumble onto it.

I don't think I've seen a bug yet apart from the game crashing when I try to alt-tab, and some casting special effects persisting if the target died before completion.

Some of the pathfinding is wonky and a lot of skills don't work like I expected them to but overall I'm having a very positive, polished experience.

Attribute damage seems brutal. A couple of breath attacks and two of my party members die from attributes hitting 0.

Fear is devastating as well for how many attacks of opportunity scaredy cats eat while running away.

Beat the big troll on the 3rd or 4th attempt, and the one after that did it with enough survivors to take down his mate.

What's the best difficulty level to play on for a decent but not frustrating challenge? Been enjoying normal but I've definitely rushed through parts and made some meaningful build mistakes. Level 6 and feels like half my claimed barony isn't explored.

Lowered enemy stats until you're level 4, regular stats afterwards until it gets boring and you increase them. Don't worry about half your barony being unexplored, you generally have some downtime between main story beats.

What are meaningful build mistakes? I just kept everyone as they were (except Octavia, who became the Arcane Trickster she's built to be) and it was fine.

My main is a half magus half fighter with a concentration feat that never gets used because he doesn't cast proper spells and two, possibly even three gear specialisation feats that also do nothing because this trident looks cool etc. Couple more points in intelligence wouldn't have hurt, either.

Octavia I put thief levels on but now I need a mage more. The rest just have a few bad choices of spells and stuff.

Teamwork feats seem good, I should invest in those, right? The flanking ones especially?

Says a lot about the game that I haven't already restarted half a dozen times with different classes/builds trying to find the fun.

The Stag Lord's camp is beating my head in on Challenging. I thought Kressle's little gang might help with a few groups but they just warp us all to the end boss, which is obviously suicide. His cleric's group of melee murderers kill me off shockingly fast. Might have to save scum until I can crit kill her in the opening salvo to stand any sort of chance. Heals too strong otherwise.

I've only got a couple of guys at level 5 (non-shared xp this campaign) but can't see anything much left on the map to do apart from get killed by that greater werewolf. Almost 70 days left on the timer...

The gate fight is the easiest one because it's only three bandits. Certainly no tougher than the three zombie lords and their chums guarding the broken fence area.

I've cleared the bottom right and top left bits, with great difficulty. Recruited one of his lieutenants, can't get to the other two. Owlbear ready to pounce. Kressle's clowns waiting outside the gate.

Raise Dead scrolls are seriously expensive. I'm not going to bother reviving Reg next time.

Finally got into this and good lord - I picked challenging because "hey, I'm alright at D&D etc. and CRPGs in general, normal says it reduces monster stats so it's probably pretty easy". Hello, AC42 owlbears with +28 to-hit. :psyduck: Those stats are for an epic demigod encounter, not something you get at level 8. Looks like characters targeting non-touch AC are pretty useless?

About the gameplay itself, is there seriously no way to set your characters' AI behavior, or am I missing something? I figured I'd make Octavia an archer that buffs herself with hurricane bow etc. and uses longbows (probably a mistake due to the giga-bloated AC values), but she keeps spamming acid splash. Do I have to manually set her back to attacking with the bow every single time?

EDIT: Also, I see people saying the enemies don't change targets & just keep hammering the tank - for me they absolutely do, I've had mobs just suddenly decide to stop hitting Valerie, walk all the way to the squishy casters and splatter them.

Yeah enemies will change targets pretty frequently.

I don't know how to make her use her bow but if you right click one of her other ranged cantrips it'll make her use that instead as her default attack (useful in zombie fights where you can set all your backline to spam the anti-undead spell).

It actually brought Valerie up to the level below the baron, from 2 to 4, so she's still the best part of two levels behind after training. Next time I'll wait until just after I level up, instead of shortly before.

Bear treant is one of the game's early "you're not just running in and hitting stuff, are you?" checks. Although that can still work with a couple of lucky crits.

The other one is the swarms in the spider cave. You need to be doing some reading of loading screens that very rarely come up.

I mean, a lot of those higher level spells very much have their useful purposes, but if you really just want to hit things with touch spells why fill the upper slots with Shocking Grasp when you could fill them with Vampiric Touch instead? Unless you're fighting a bunch of nonliving things, it's higher damage, a better damage type, and has a positive effect for you as well.

Necromancy is an abomination.

I really like how Magus strikes a balance between preparation and spontaneous casting with spell recall. Put 100 hours into the game now and still figuring out basic things like the metamagic feats and what keen does.

Outflank is a ludicrous trait. The accuracy bonus is great on its own. Then someone crits and a primal hydra explodes.

Did they stealth buff Hargulka in the last few days? Motherfucker is hitting multiple times a round for 51 through 10DR, can't be hit and when he does it's just a fraction of his health bar despite everyone packing two-handers with elemental effects.

I've seen the "get Tartuk" advice before but I've never managed to actually get to him without being intercepted, and he takes some hitting himself.

I have somewhat limited options because I've done the zone start to bosses with no rests and I'm level 6s and 7s, but everyone has blur, shield of faith, heroism, bless all the basic stuff up and then I had a wand of cat's grace, haste and prayer scrolls, ray of enfeeblement, doom... I sort of put too many eggs in the hold person basket forgetting he has freedom of movement but I wasn't running on empty.

If I go back to the autosave at the start of the Depths area I think I've got a glitterdust I wasted that could make a difference. Otherwise I'm relying on Harrim hitting a 1 in 4 dispel roll before any of my party go down (Valerie has been getting one-rounded my last few attempts) and my magus can hit his spell-strikes. With haste up he's harder to hit and will mulch me no matter how well Amiri and Ekun roll in attack (they roll so, so poorly).

I've got it on challenging and the only fight that's given me any real trouble before now on this run is the boar on the map with the bear treant. The bear took only one reload but that boar would not cooperate. This dungeon has been a breeze since I knew what was coming, took the shortest route and had a wand of fireball.

Having Valerie from the start is so much easier than making do with Harrim. I've given her some Vanguard levels which may or may not be helping, she gets sneak attack damage and there's an extra graphical effect but I don't know what it really means. Giving outflank to everyone should be lumping on some decent damage if anyone would ever crit.
