Absolutely the Millennium Falcon/Serenity is proof of this. But critically they're still named something cool.

Something beat up and worn down can be cool. No one is like thats so awesome that this smells like poo poo.

Oh yeah, I totally agree there. I just also kinda see what they were going for. Even as someone who enjoyed X:R after patches there are a lot of ideas in it that are like fairly close to being decent that miss the mark pretty badly.

Dug up an old video from last year that shows some nice detail about sector layouts and station building. Looks pretty nice, ship density is way up from Rebirth and the layout is a lot more interesting too.

Pop in is a bit concerning and might be something to watch out for in X4, though again it was a year ago, so hopefully a bit improved since then.

This.

I'm replaying X:Rebirth at the moment after cheating myself an _insane_ amount of money, and I kinda get what they were aiming for. More actual engagement from the player, but unfortunately they hide the drat economy behind the scanning - extra money means hiring a fleet of Artio's trivializes it. There's also a horrible dependency on a couple of items that are seriously backed up - build a ship tech fab in far out early - that is supposed to spur piracy, but that's really not exposed either.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the weird... personalized tone they took with everything. It's literally hiding the interface behind pointless faff. It seems like X4 is much improving that with the map click driven interface and proper interfaces for stations and that. But I don't know if in Rebirth it was just trying to pad out the limited content or whether they went for some weird themed approach with it being a more personal scope game? Not a fan either way.

That said I do wonder if they might do something good with the manager system. It is kind of cool to set up hierarchies where you have a station, the station commands a fleet, fleet ships command smaller wings of craft, and it sort of almost works! The main thing I think it needs is a better assignment interface and more automation by the managers as well as more options. If managers could see to the repair and more active assignment of craft under their command that would be quite nice. Like if a station could intelligently dispatch fighter wings to clear out enemies they detect, while withdrawing and repairing craft as they get damaged, that'd be cool. The framework's there but it just needs some more attention. They will try to do this, if you assing fighters to a station they send them out to cover their mining ships and such, but it's hamstrung by the need to constantly replace and recrew them yourself.

What are you looking for in terms of the "X3 feeling"?

OwlFancier
Aug 22, 2013

I agree that it's never quite going to be the same it's true, but I'm willing to trade some of the X3 stuff for imrpovements in the areas where it was lacking such as interface and simulation, as well as graphical fidelity which really helps in a game as slow paced as an X game.

Two capital ships trying to use the same jumpgate at the same time and instead colliding with eachother until they blow up.

Or alternatively, you arriving at a system only to suddenly die because a capital ship warped in from the same jumpgate half a second after you did. :v:

OwlFancier

It's hard playing rebirth to remember just how deadly TL gate roadkill used to be, the insane levels of bounciness they added are silly but I still think i prefer it over X3 levels of impact lethality in Rebirth-like environments. Especially if everything can now go as fast as a supertuned kestrel with travel drives.

Shrimp or Shrimps
Feb 14, 2012

IIRC even god mode scripts couldn't save you from gatekill because they replenished health and impact damage when warping into an M1 put your health into the 'negative'.

Speaking of gatekill, another kind of gatekill I was particularly fond of was the Ring of Fire script by Cycrow (?) where your ship would automatically deploy laser towers in a ring around a gate.

Using that with LU was good fun in the invasion sectors.

LTs appear to be back in Foundations so I am certainly hype to fill freighters with them and drop them on people.

Though it's going to be tied with building a big fuckoff station next to the gate covered in guns.

I didn't even realize there was a thread for this, let alone that the game was coming out so soon, holy poo poo. Probably not going to pre-order just because I remember what Rebirth was like at release (I actually don't think it's a terrible game now but it took a lot of work to get it there), but feeling cautiously optimistic about it and will probably pick it up relatively quickly if post-release impressions are at least halfway decent.

In response to the quoted post, I think one of the issues with the delegation in Rebirth was that aside from the interface fuckery (which yeah, was awkward as hell), it wasn't super clear what any of the skills of the people involved actually did. Even looking it up, it turns out that for a lot of them, they don't even do anything particularly meaningful anyway. At that point why even bother with the individual characters - you could set up a similar sort of delegation tree and just abstract them all away as people you hire automatically.

Being able to handle stuff like replacing lost ships on their own and other tasks would be great (small ships especially - trying to manage fighters in Rebirth was such a huge chore because you always had to buy them manually and they were barely any tougher than drones). Having hierarchies is neat but after a certain point you really stop caring about the bottom level and it would be good if you could just delegate away the buying of ships and hiring of pilots/captains to your station managers. Maybe just set some kind of target complement like "5 freighters with 5 fighters each as escorts" and the Manager would just work out the details, the same way you do with drones on cap ships.

You can get them to do that with drones, they'll try to keep their station drone complement up to snuff, though on that note I kind of wish mining and cargo drones weren't even a thing, especailly for small ships.

But yeah expanding what managers can do would be good, and I don't care for the stat system either tbh, having like, AI managers is good, but tying them to a character system is a bit weird and pointless I think.

On a non X4 note I started playing Rebirth again and the Lost Sectors mod adds some incredibly cool stuff:

It looks like the rebirth style modular stations makes kitbashing new ones very doable!

It seems ES is in radio silence mode for now, probably because they're crunch timing it on the way to release.

I'd like more information, or least a basic 10-20 minute gameplay video.

In particular I'd like to know how you're going to command groups of ships such as fighter wings or how carriers might command them on their own.

Also, if you're in a capital ship, how will you command its turrets?

I know a lot of basic things can be done from the map, but I'm very interested in how complex things will be handled with this new UI and again being able to fly any ship.

I'm pretty sure there were carriers in base X3 but not in Rebirth, so we'll see if they're back in X4. In Rebirth they went really heavy on drones as replacements for how they used to use fighters, but for some reason they still had M5's and M4's around anyway. They were clearly a vestigial thing in Rebirth - hopefully they'll be integrated in X4 better.

if I recall, base Rebirth didn't have any fighters at all, and they made it in later. I usually carry around a spare pilot for the inevitable abandoned fighter, then I send them to go play with hostile station scanning.

The PMC capitals sure aren't shy about throwing drones and fighters at you, though.

I don't know that it'll let you, because those node points tend to have a fairly large bouncing box on the outside that won't intersect with highways or sector gates in rebirth at least.

I've been playing it a bit more, and holy crap did they want you to pirate literally everything to set up De Vries. Fusion reactors and metal plates are early bottlenecks, then drones become an issue, especially cargo and surface miners.

Yeah the economy with critical shortages was annoying in Rebirth. Like it made sense for them to leave openings for you to exploit as a player, but they made that stuff required for EVERYTHING, including the stations that would be building more of them. So what ends up happening is the whole economy just grinds to a halt while everyone sits around waiting to snipe fusion reactors as soon as they’re built.

It’s not really a surprise that the DLC updates for the game just ended up adding massive economic hubs that produced everything.

Hopefully the economy will be a bit more self-correcting in X4 since the AI will actually be able to build new stations on its own.

Looking at the latest screenshot it seems like cargo/constructor drones are much cheaper now, which I hope will make them far less annoying than they were in rebirth cos yes, I hated having to use them and a dozen could cost more than the capital ship you put them on.

I'm hoping surface miner drones are either gone or similarly much cheaper.
