Deckbuilder update:

I broke down and bought Monster Train. I was hesitant at first because the $30 pricetag seemed a bit steep, but as it turns out, there's tons and tons and tons of content. Guessing I could spend 100+ hours unlocking stuff in the game if I feel like it.

It's very, very confusing at first (the game's tutorials are very limited, it basically just throws you into a run and hopes you figure poo poo out as you go along). But after a few runs, I started to figure out the strategy and maybe 5 runs later, I won my first game.

It's both similar enough to Slay The Spire to hit a lot of the same buttons, and different enough that it doesn't feel like I'm playing the same game. The strategic elements seem quite different from StS — as far as I can tell, Monster Train not only encourages you to build towards absurd game-breaking combos/deck synergies, but it requires it, as the final boss is vicious and punishing unless you can set up a Big Cheese and pulverize it. In StS, it often feels like you have to plan your Act 3 deck starting from Act 1, but in Monster Train, you have enough information (and available cards) to start setting up wild combos only a few rounds in.

I really dig the game's graphics and style, and the combat animations are a bit more visceral than StS, so there's a fun added visual element.

Overall I'm having a lot of fun with it. If you, like I, are or were addicted to Slay The Spire and pray for a sequel, Monster Train is certainly not the Slay sequel you were praying for, but it's a fun diversion that hits a lot of the same notes and has enough of a strategic twist on its gameplay to stand apart from Slay.

4/5 recommended for deckbuilder freaks

Thanks for this writeup. As a bonehead moron who can't think farther than 5 minutes into the future, I enjoy sts but I know I'll never get good at it. I wonder if this might be more up my alley...does it require you to have intimate knowledge of the enemy actions, encounters, etc like sts? Or can you just kind of wing it and think "that card looks good" and you're not screwing up you deck?

You can definitely wing it and trip into really fun busted combos. I’m one of those “oh this card looks fun” kinda players too. There are tons of ways to modify your deck in monster train, it’s really generous with its fun. It’s really good, I like it a lot more than slay the spire.

That's a good question, and so far, I'd say the answer is no, but that's probably just because there's so much to learn in the game and I haven't absorbed it all yet.

I will say that I've won two runs so far, and both were kind of "accidental," in that I was like "oh this unit looks cool" (each 'deck' has multiple attack units with different attack styles/effects/statuses/synergies etc, which I rate as the primary differentiator from StS — it almost feels a bit like a MOBA or RTS that way) and then basically stumbled into card synergies without really realizing it until I plowed my way through the last boss.

It does seem a bit more forgiving in that each deck or "clan" has multiple different angles of attack, synergies, strategies and all that. The downside is that it's definitely easier to dilute your deck than in StS. In MT, it seems like the winningest strategy is to pick one or two methods of attack early on and then double down on those constantly throughout the game, so that you're scaling big numbers by the time you hit the end.

I'm not very good at StS either. I think the highest ascension level I made it to on any of the decks was 6 or 7 and I doubt I have it in me to go further beyond that. MT has a similar thing called "covenant" levels, and I've only unlocked the first, so I'm guessing it's going to get a whole lot harder as I progress through the game. I seriously doubt I'm going to hit the highest covenant levels in MT either, but I'm still having a lot of fun with it.

The real draw for me is that the gameplay feels different enough but still hits all the fun chaotic notes of StS. Each 'clan' (deck) has a champion unit, and then you can pick up a bunch of supporting unit cards. Each of these units feels distinct and covers a different playstyle. It definitely feels meaningfully different from StS in that respect.
