I think they both had amazing music but a bad Genesis song sounded worse than a bad SNES song most of the time which I think colors things.

Yeah that's true. I dunno I just think about all the games where the Genesis version of the music was actually better than the SNES version, Cool Spot is basically the number one example but I'm sure there were others.

Mega Man X's soundtrack would have fit better on the Genesis.

I’d like to see an actual playable version of MMX on the genesis. I’m not sure if the YouTube ost conversions use all of the sound channel including the ones needed to make the game sound effects so I don’t trust their accuracy

Genesis sound differs even between models, but yeah, it's why I went with "approximation" since it's tough to pin down. Those Brave Wave vinyl releases are excellent.

Oh sweet, more Genesis covers of Mega Man X music! I got into a lot of Genesis covers of SNES music with ChiptunedRaijin, who also did some MMX music. Here, have some Genesis Flame Stag and Crystal Snail tracks.

And his fantastic Genesis cover of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest's regular battle theme.

The thing about the great music on Genesis is that a LOT of it was trapped in games no one played, where a larger percentage of the SNES bangers were in popular games. Also the SNES has more games that became true classics or successful franchises, and the fact that people hear those nostalgic soundtracks again helps them remember things that way.

The genesis sound chip is legit, it's the same FM synth Stan Bush used to record a bunch of songs. You can definitely get good music out of it, you just can't drop the same tracker files from your snes game into a genesis game and expect it to sound good, which a ton of developers did

Which brings me back to something I've always said: When they put out the same game on both systems the snes version was superior, but when they made two different games (usually because the genesis couldn't handle the same graphics) the genesis version was way better

There’s a board somewhere in Nintendo’s headquarters that displays the Current Projected Release Date of Metroid Prime Trilogy on Nintendo Switch, which gets pushed back one week every time a leaker claims its coming soon

Right now it’s been pushed back to 2028

They've locked themselves to the GameCube with their fetishization of input lag.

Input latency is massively important and arguing otherwise to spite the Loathsome Dreaded Melee Subhumans is clownish. There's plenty of substantiative criticism of Melee and its community to be made without resorting to nonsense.

High input latency is also a frustrating commonality with a lot of first-party titles on Switch.

This. Only things I miss are Break the Targets and Trophies (although if we got the latter there would be way less game representation in Ultimate than just using spirits)

Melee players play on flatscreens now too. It took a while to figure out how to get high quality digital 1080p signals out of a GameCube or Wii before the monitor's laggy internal scalers ruined everything but between new hardware and Universal Controller Fix, plus the Slippi revolution, monitor melee is popular and a solved problem.

The difference between Melee and Brood War is that Brood War is a PC game with configurable settings whereas Melee on the GameCube was sort of a "black box" for many years until decompilation and mod tools revealed how it handles inputs and rendering.
