Anyone know what the deal is with the new Umihara Kawase game not being on the eshop yet? I was really looking forward to it and it's strange as heck that days after the physical release is out there's still no sign of a digital version on the US shop. Looked around and saw that Nicalis has been radio silent on the matter but hey maybe someone has heard something.

How does the first Xenoblade game compare to 2? I tried to stick with 2 for a while, but just couldn't deal with the gacha system for blades, the crazy number of different systems in the game overall, and the occasional overly anime-ness of it (particularly with the Nopons).

It doesn't have gacha so if nothing else you can actually plan how to build your team.

Those of you who have played it, does the gameplay scope of the game increase post-demo? Like are there mini games? Does the combat ever get interesting or is it gonna stay as the chill auto-battler I played in the demo?

Yes on all accounts.

So far the game seems to have been extremely forgiving in regards to being able to go back and do stuff later if you miss it so I'm hoping it continues in that vein. I'd prefer non-spoilery answers please.

There are a few optional cutscenes scattered around the world that are only available before doing that. Nothing too big in those and you can always look them up on youtube if you miss 'em. But besides those there's nothing important.

I could be remembering wrong, but I think she talked like that in the original fan translation too. She definitely had some sort of ridiculous, babyish speech pattern, because I remember it being a pain to read through her dialogue since you had to actually stop at every other word and figure out what it was.

She definitely did have it in the original fan translation. The official translation just went way further with how they handled it.

It depends on why you hated Xenoblade 2 but the original has a lot of differences so it's possible you'd end up liking it. I definitely like it way more than 2 since I could easily customize my party setup instead of having to rely on gatcha bullshit (and the story was better too).

The game just kinda played its self. Aside from the 3D boss fight minigames, I can't remember anything that stood out about it.

As a point in its favor, Paper Jam did have harder boss fights than most of the games insomuch as even early bosses could be punishing if you screwed up while dodging their attacks since their damage was so high.

As a million points against it, Paper Jam had mandatory Toad-collecting minigames that were repetitive and mainly served to pad it out.

TTYD had poo poo like Mario folding into a paper airplane, it definitely played up the fact that everything was made of paper.

Super Paper Mario was a cool concept poorly executed. But it has some incredible stuff like Mr. L and the anime nerd Chameleon.

Sticker Star was hilarious in that they eliminated the story because of feedback from Club Nintendo surveys about SPM. That was dumb.

Color Splash was pretty good, I enjoyed the story and a lot of the humor, the battles were ok. But nobody will ever play it because it was on WiiU.

Was Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam any good? I think I bought it on sale or got it free as a club Nintendo reward but never played it.

Paper Jam had some really great combat but the parts in-between the combat could get really tedious. It's a mixed bag.

if we're talking stuff on current gen hardware, Dragon Quest 11 probably has the Switch best port because they reworked a lot of stuff behind the scenes to get it to run great on Switch. So much that Square Enix even considers it a remake, not a port. Side by side with PS4/PC yeah it looks a lil fuzzy but never in a way that's bothersome on its own.

Definitely not a luxury that most devs can afford to do tho.

Are the upgrades/changes in DQ11 on the switch substantial enough to make it properly the definitive version? I bought it on PS4 back when it came out but never played it, now my PS4 is basically full all the time anyway and Ghosts is coming out as well so have to make space for that. I could probably sell DQ11 to someone and make back half of the cash and then get it on Switch without feeling too stupid but not sure if it's worth the hassle.

There's a bunch of good content additions to the game but also it comes with some time-saving quality of life stuff too (faster battle speed, some changes to crafting so that you can buy materials from anywhere instead of having to go to a shop) that frankly I can't imagine ever playing without.

I played through NESFlix Super Mario Bros in handheld mode yesterday, using the left joy con buttons as a D-pad is not ideal. It’s still playable and I was able to finish the game, but yikes is it uncomfortable.

When you all play NES/SNES games, are you playing in handheld mode or docked? Docked mode is definitely more comfortable because it includes the option of a controller with a good D-pad, but it also kind of defeats the appeal of having these games mobile.

I own the Hori d-pad joycon that can only be used in handheld mode and it does a fine enough job for those types of games.

Any recommendations for a way to make handheld mode a bit more comfortable? I find that for slower games it's okay but faster games like the Megaman X collection are harder to play because of how I end up holding it.

Either alternative joycons or some kind of clip-on peripheral to make it a little more ergonomic is fine honestly.

Ideally, the switch would still be dockable and the joycons still removable without having to take the case off, but I don't know if I'm asking too much there.

The hori split pad pro rules a lot. It lacks a few features (no gyro but for most games that's no issue) but more than makes up for it by actually being comfortable and not a clunky mess when playing certain action-heavy games.

Is that Mario 3D All Stars worth picking up... if its for your wife who doesn't care about all the accuracies and HD and is just starting to like the 3d games?

Before this she really loved Yoshis Island and recently got all the way through Yarn Yoshi on the Wii U. She is nearing completion of Mario 3D World and has been loving that - the move to 3D was tough at first but she likes it now (and only uses Princess cause she can float like Yoshi). I have Odyssey for the Switch so she can play that later but I know that 3D All Stars is gone in March so wondering if I should get that...

I saw one review on YouTube saying its utterly shite but I don't think she'd care too much and would just want new games to play.

The games themselves play fine it's just that most complaints are about how the games should have been more than just a simple remaster considering the price point.

But it's a subjective thing, I personally got my money's worth out of the collection.

Pacman 99 proving to be more divisive than Tetris or Mario. I kinda like it? But hard agree on it being more obtuse than either of the games before it.

I think using the different options might influence the randomization of each board/threshold but maybe it's just my imagination?
Speed sometimes makes the board easier to clear (some quadrants missing dots) for a quicker board clear / speed up?
Train might reduce the threshold of dots needed for a bonus fruit, so you can cycle the board quicker and add to your train? Or maybe it just gives you additional ghosts on train?
No idea how strength might work. Maybe a slight attack bonus to your badges?

I'm enjoying it too but I have no idea what I'm even doing since unlike Tetris or Mario there's a bunch of stuff that I can't figure out. It really needs some documentation out there. Hopefully it won't be too long before someone figures out the exact mechanics and puts out a guide.
