The Switch is considerably stronger than the Wii U. Like, it's not as huge a leap as the PS4 or XB1 but it's nothing to sneeze at.

Super Mario 64 also has a very vocal and valid contingent of people who don't want it changed or messed with in any way, so I can understand why it's more or less just a resolution bump with new textures. Also there's fanfare over rereleased games because these are classics that stand the test of time that pretty much everyone has been wanting. I'm not surprised they're making a big deal about it.
