#acolyte GM of 2013
Current Glory: 0/8

Current Ruin:6/6

Unknown Date.M42

Astra Militarum Conveyance Vessel Atlas-283

Orbiting Mitoch'ja

The acolyte cell didn't have much to go on. They had all read and re-read Inquisitor Kingston's file on the case. It consisted of a message and a planetary fact sheet.

Mitoch'ja Adeptus Arbites posted:

To: Imperium Nihilus Inquisition Command, Ordos Malleus or Hereticus.
From: Investigator Henry Shea, Special Investigations Squad, Adeptus Arbites, Ata'tah, Mitoch'ja.
Re: Potential Cult activity

Local construction contractors were demolishing a building in the capital city of Ata'tah when they found an abandoned section in one of the sub basements. Room contained a dead body and a ritual site of some kind. Body was skeletal, likely been there at least ten years. Body found on an altar. Altar and the room had runes of an unknown script carved into them. As in, the entire room is covered, even the ceiling and floors. Astropath has indicated that due to interference from the Great Rift she cannot send out images, only text.

Concerned that no other cult activity has ever been uncovered. Concerned that this might be some recidivist cult or even Chaos in origin. Given site's age cult could have been operating for quite some time unhindered.

Requesting immediate Inquisition support to identify and investigate.

The only other information was a one page planetary data-sheet:

pre:
Planet Name: Mitoch'ja
Capital City: Ata'tah
Planet Designation: Imperial/Hive
Government type: Elected council, 25 members.
Tithe Grade: Majoris
Population: 10 Billion
Size: Diameter of 6,906 miles
Climate: Multiple biomes, four seasons, Average temperatures ten degrees below Human Ideal.
Moons: none
History and notes: Mitoch'ja was brought into Imperial Compliance in
M37 after millennia as an independent system. The current planetary exports are
manufactured goods for the Imperial Guard: non-ordinance designation,
and Astra Militarum Regiment, mostly known for siege warfare; defense designation.
Such little information meant that the Acolytes had to gather all their intel on the ground, but they weren't left with much choice. So the group was booked passage on Atlas-283, a Militarum ship being sent to Mitoch'ja to pick up the next batch of Imperial solders to throw into the meat grinder. The trip was uneventful, and the group was allowed use of one of the nicer staterooms that would transport Regimental officers. When the ship attained orbit, the acolytes' presence was communicated to the Arbites below, and the team was loaded onto a lander heading to the city.

The Capital of Ata'tah was beautiful. Though designated a hive city, it was different than most, in that it sprawled outwards, not up. Even from the air, it seemed the lights of the city went on in all directions to the horizon. The city was organized around giant pyramid structures that appeared to be some sort of mega-blocks, with commercial and industrial structures surrounding them. After a 40 minute flight, the lander sets down in the middle of a standard looking Judicial Block. Large walls surrounding a towering stone structure, as sound as it was imposing.

On the Landing pad the team is met by Investigator Shea. He has the appearance of a man whose best days are behind him. As he greets the cell he shakes everyone's hand, save the Eldar and the Marine, the later of the which he bows to, everyone can see his eyes are sunken in and dark with lack of sleep. The man is over six feed tall and broad shouldered; he gives the impression that he was once a larger man, but the ravages of his job have taken their toll. He motions for everyone to follow him into the block. He absent mindedly takes a lho out of his jacket and starts to light it until he notices the no smoking sign on the sign of the building and gives up, the unlit lho remaining in his lips.

He leads the group into a large room with several desks, though most of them seem empty. "Henry Shea, Special Investigations. I'm all we got right now, and uh, let's say there are a lot of special investigations." he sighs. "Okay, so yeah, sorry, you're here for the case in the old Garment factory in the Alder district. Real hosed up find. Contractors were getting ready to do a controlled demo, and found a room in a sub-basement. drat thing was out of some weird loving nightmare. Weird runes and symbols carved into the walls, floors, ceilings, everything. Our stiff was on some altar in the middle. Had been there for years, was essentially just bone and some little shrived skin, evidence of a lot of rats probably eating away stuff."

He points to a Cogitator on an unused desk. "I took a load of picts and loaded them on that cogitator in anticipation of your arrival though if you want to see the real thing, once I got the confirmation that the Inquisition was coming, I was able to enjoin the building owner from demolishing the place. The body is no longer on site though, was moved to our morgue here on site. I haven't had a chance to follow up with the Coroner, but he said his initial hunch was the body was so old and so eaten up he wasn't going to get a cause of death. I can also answer any questions ya got, but I ain't got much."

Okay, that is the initial set up, act accordingly. I am going to keep track of Glory and ruin, but please make sure to note, in bold when you shift an exalted to the glory pool.

I am also going to play with the campaign cards. You get one, and keep it until you use it. Campaign cards will then refresh when we reach appropriate places, since there aren't session. Your campaign cards are as follows:

Gregori the Merciful: Perfidious Eldar: play to add -2d to any one skill for the scene. Add one ruin to the GM's total.

Karnera Uthel: Heresy! Discuss an item, being, or concept that is an example of the temptations of the Ruinous Powers. All protagonists may choose to make a corruption test. Those who risk the test gain one Wrath.

Lyta Hatcher" The Lost and the DamnedTake one to three Wrath from another player character. Make a corruption Test at a penalty equal to the number of wrath taken.

Dak'ir-Salamander Tech-Marine: Speed Kills. Play to double the Speed of a vehicle for one round. Alternatively, play after sprinting in combat. You may immediately make a single melee attack against a single target as a free action. You gain +2d for this attack roll.

Sky Breneman: Martyrdom:Play this card to achieve a significant goal. Your character dies in the process. All protagonists gain 1 Wrath. Alternatively, discard to gain one wrath and draw a new card.

Senior Acolyte Lauren Andser: Courage and Honor: Any Protagonist who wishes may immediately refresh their Wrath.

Dak'ir, Salamander Techmarine
Wrath Points: 2

The techmarine stayed silent as Henry Shea explained the little information he had. A potential cult being unnoticed for at least a decade was never a good sign, but it also wasn't much to go on. He considered checking the picts on the cogitator, but he felt he wouldn't know what to look for. When Henry Shea asks if any of the acolytes had questions, Dak'ir speaks abruptly. "Who owns that building, and did they still own it ten years ago? If it took this long to find this room, I assume the Garment factory was facing financial issues for some time, and had fewer employees, or else was abandoned."

Wrath: 2

Ata'tah was nothing if not impressive. Despite possible Chaos activity, Acolyte Hatcher wouldn't mind if they were stationed here for a good while.

The adept narrowed her eyes at the fact sheet as Investigator Shea filled them in on more details. Only one page? Ruminating on how this could possibly be, she greeted their contact warmly and followed inside to a dismally understaffed office.

"My medicae expertise is usually directed into more esoteric subjects, but personnel files didn't indicate any of you specialized in it. Depsite the poor state of the body, I suppose I could take a look. The picts would help avoid some surprises, but we'll be surveying the site personally. I assume."

Sky Breneman
Wrath: 2

"I'm curious who ran the building." Sky asks the Arbites, "Was it abandoned to squatters? Did some local thugs run something out of it? Buildings that size rarely go unused for long. And since your deader's a decade dead, maybe it's changed hands over the years?"

I'm gonna go ahead and discard that campaign card for a different one. Maybe if we'd been a ways into the game I'd hang onto it but that's a crap one to draw at the start.

Shea blinks for a second as the Astartes addresses him either sleep deprived or not used to being in the presence of an Astartes. Or both. He turns to his desk and pulls a file folder from a stack. Despite the desk looking like small-c chaos, it must be organized, as he knew right where it was at. "Yeah, current owner is Skytop Incorporated, a closely held company with one stock owner, Art Kendry. Guy builds luxury condo housing, with each project it's own company. Recently got the building in a condemnation sale."

Shea flips through the folder. "Previous Owner was a woman named Abigail West.Ran a garment company called Petticoat Junction. About 25 years ago a horrendous fire was started at the garment factory. Three hundred garment workers, including Ms. West died. From what I pulled from Administratum records no one ever came forward claiming to be an heir, and well, it takes about 25 years for a condemnation proceeding to make its way through, so the shell of the building has sat there vacant since."

He hands the folder to the astartes.

There he is!

Senior Acolyte Lauren "Recklass" Andser
Inquisitorial Brat

Lauren walks off the ramp and greets the investigator with a nod and a small, somewhat disconcerting smile. So far, nothing out of the ordinary. Still... there was something that nagged at the back of her mind as she listened to the history of the building. Abandoned for 25 years, home to a sudden and horrific tragedy. If one was going to attempt contacting the Beyond, there wouldn't be a better place. However the followers of Chaos, when they reached full cult status, normally would not abandon such a sight completely. So if this was a ritual, it was probably personal, and either it went correctly or it all hell. Perhaps literally, if they could be so blessed.

"Do you have any information on who the deceased was? Were the remains able to be genescanned, or some identifying personal effects that survived?"

"Regardless, if you could show me the symbols that would be helpful. We will also need to visit the site itself soon. Are there some sort of guards posted at the scene, in case someone comes back to try and cover their tracks?"

Gregori the Merciful
Wrath: 2 | Faith: 2/2

Apart from a curt greeting to the Investigator, Gregori has remained silent up until this point, focusing on collating the information in his head. Tragic mass deaths and mysterious rune-covered altar rooms certainly pointed to Chaos, or at least heresies approaching Chaos. Only one detail nagged at him.

"Investigator Shea, one question. This Art Kendry builds luxury condos, you said. In your opinion as a local, is this factory a desirable location for luxury condominiums? If there are better locations available to him, that could point to other motives for purchasing the site. Unlikely to be as relevant as the symbols or evidence we already have, but I don't consider anyone connected to a heresy to be above initial suspicion."

Shea turns towards his desk and starts searching through the files on his desk as he speaks, "Yeah, I thought of genecoding, asked the coroner to run that right away, if the deceased was a citizen, she'll be in the database. Then again, under hivers and off worlder's wouldn't be." He finishes searching his desk and turns around, "Can't see that I got anything from the coroner, so either he didn't finish the gene sequencing yet, or it didn't come up a match."

At Gregori's question Henry sighs, "Look, I'm not a real estate expert, I don't know if its a good place. The luxury living he builds usually has guards, security cameras, and tenants that can afford a flyer, so they likely never have any run-ins with the locals, so it probably don't matter. Look, I just don't see Art as your man. He's built his fortune the last fifteen years buying up old buildings at auction and foreclosure and doing these renos. Look, he's the one that contacted us after his crew found the room. If he were involved it would have made sense to keep his mouth shut, the room would have been so much rubble as soon as the demo charges blew."

While Henry answer's Gregori's question, Lauren went over to the Cogitator to review the picts. There were a couple hundred, of all shapes and types. From the pictures the room seems to have been some sort of storage room at some point, though no shelves remained. True to his word, the entire room is covered in runes. The picts are detailed, but that doesn't make the job any less difficult. Being an agent of the Ordos Malleus, the first thing that strikes Lauren's attention is none of the typical runes associated with the four Chaos Gods or Chaos Undivided can be seen, though that doesn't mean they aren't there, just can't be seen in any picts.

Okay, so you don't see anything chaos with the runes, but to identify them someone needs to make me a DN6 scholar test. If you can't identify them now, someone will likely need to do some research.

Roll using Orokos. For simplicity sake, we'll say that the first D6 will always be the Wrath die.

Kaenera Uthel | Wrath: 2/2

The warlock had been quiet while the pleasantries were exchanged. Suffice to say that the relatively poor opinion the Imperium's average citizen held of that which was not human did not particularly encourage any attempts to engage with them. Kaenera may well respect their warriors, as well as those such as the Inquisitor, but she cares little for the backwater ignorance these fools demonstrate. She follows Lauren to review the evidence, if only in an attempt to find a lead to their common foe faster. She'd never had much of a head for scholastics, nor the time to pursue them with the demands that the Paths of the Warrior and Seer both claimed of her time.

Leaning over the cogitator, visions flicker across her field of view. Hints of what was to come, what others might miss, and things stranger still. A trained mind, an Aeldari mind, could make use of those hints to snatch victory from the grasp of defeat. After a moment, her eyes widen in surprise. These were no ordinary runes. No... she knew them well. She says, "I've seen these marks before."

Lauren flips through the various picts of the foreign looking script, but cannot figure out their origin. It is the Eldar Warlock, looking over the Inquisitorial Agent's shoulder, who has a glimmer of recognition. Uthel has fought the forces of Chaos for centuries, and due to the demographics of the galaxy, most of their mortal followers are humans. The runes looked like a script she had seen one time fighting Chaos insurgents. These insurgents had manipulated a mundane cult on a Human world, and the mundane cultists had used this very script before the forces of Chaos intervened. She remembered when going through and destroying the books of the cult upon defeat that one was full of this script, and the book called it, Misticarium. The book described it as a long dead (at least spoken) language used by secret societies, fraternal organizations, and yes, Chaos cults, to shield communications.

Lauren and Uthel look through the picts, and with what of the script the Eldar can remember, they are able to piece together and translate the markings. It seems three sentences are repeated over and over again:

The Mitoch'ja'een will come again and lead us.
The Tel'an'id shall rule as they once did.
Until then, we must purge the hidden Uk'vah from the Tel'an'id.

Even with the translations, three terms seem unknown: Mitoch'ja'een, Tel'an'id, and Uk'vah. Shea comes over, and runs his hand through his hair, "Well I'll be a boil on a grox, you translated it, well mostly. I don't know what any of that means, seems to be in the native tongue, but, uh, guess teaching of that is forbidden. Something about when the Imperium overthrew the prior planetary government when the planet was pacified. Only hangovers are the planet name and some of the city names."

Well, you have deciphered some of the language from the picts, though visiting the actual site could shed more light. The body is also available at the coroner, who is just downstairs.

Lyta began to queue up medical indexes on her data-slate, and was pleased to find that whatever difficulties had started a small discussion at the cogitator had smoothed themselves out before she was necessary. The way that the xeno seemed to not need the interface and instead relied mostly on some sort of inner power and previous knowledge was especially curious. How good was Aeldari memory? A subject of later consideration...

Lauren nods slowly as the Eldar talks, taking out a small book and making some notes of her own.

Use the knowledge you have, regardless of its source - that is one of the burdens we bear.

"I will enter that into our records. Spreading awareness of this script might save us pain. If this is the native planetary tongue... Perhaps records exist of the planet during the conquest, that might shed light on whatever non-human forces were encountered during that time. If we're lucky this is some sort of doomsday cult trying to bring back the former alien overlords. If we're not lucky..."

She finishes writing and replaces the book in her jacket, "Those that entered the room with the writing, did you have an unusual sensations? Being watched, whispers that you could not determine the source of? An overbearing presence of unease? If this was a ritual the residue of it might still be palpable. It would be best if we know to expect it going in."

"Regardless, I shall go to this room. There may well be other writing that the picts missed and, if nothing else, I am attuned to the presence of certain matters. Dak'ir flipped through the folder given to him by Henry Shea, although it didn't seem like anything was skipped over by the investigator. "So, the fire shut down the factory and killed the previous owner twenty-five years ago, and the skeletal remains found in the hidden room are from around ten years ago. That still leaves a fifteen year gap where any cult could have been doing who knows what inside the abandoned factory. Troubling, to say the least."

Meanwhile, the xeno had already proven herself useful in translating the runes scrawled all over the ritual room. Unfortunately, now they were looking at a cult whose origin might date back to when the planet was reintegrated back into the Imperium. "I agree with Lauren Andser, any records of the reconquest of Mitoch'ja may very well be relevant to our current case. If there was a concerted effort to stamp out the local language, however, those records will not be easy to obtain." Luckily Dak'ir had served centuries in the Adeptus Astartes, and while Mitoch'ja was brought back into the fold of the Imperium millennia ago, he might have heard or read a report about the planet. It was a bit of a long shot, but it would be very convenient to not have to hunt down any sealed reports.

Tying up loose ends

Lyta leaves to head down to the morgue, while the rest of the team continue to comb through the evidence from Shea in light of the new runic translations. By this point, Shea's genuine helpful demeanor starts to shift, either because he's starting to feel the effects of having not smoked that Lho, or annoyance and confusion at the questions of the team. "Feeling of unease? It's an underground chamber, below a building that burned down, killing hundreds, with that writing on the walls and a skeleton on an altar in the middle of the room! Of course I felt unease! Look, I'm Special Investigations, that means I get all the weird and high profile cases. Typically I'm dealing with the murder of a high ranking Imperial agent, or the smuggling of some Eldar poo poo. Damned ritual looking poo poo is not on the list of things I regularly deal with."

Investigator Shea closes his eyes, takes a deep breath, and seems to calm down, "Look, Art Kendry got his wealth elsewhere. He came to our world about five years ago with the capital to build all this luxury housing. His comm info is in the files here, and if you want to question him, go ahead, but I don't think he's your guy." The communicator in his pocket starts to ring, and he pulls it out quickly and answers it. After a couple "yeps" and "uh-huh" he hangs up. He takes most of the folders on his desk, moves them into one of the desk drawers, and locks it with a key from his pocket. He slaps a keycard and business card on the desk. "Look, duty calls. You're free to use this office here and the rest of the desks, I'm the only guy left in Special Investigations. Seems a damned warp rift cutting the galaxy in half really messes with Schola recruitment and assignments. That keycard will get you into the compound, this office, and anywhere else open to patrol Arbites. You've also been given access to stay at the officer barracks, it's the building outside with the dumpsters by it. Not very private though, so if you want to get a hotel somewhere, well that's on you. That business card has my personal cell-com number, if you need to reach me." With that Shea opens up his top desk drawer, pulls out a small box, unlocks it, and pulls out a large revolver and puts it in the holster under his shoulder. "Good luck all, I mean it." With that, Shea departs the office.

[Scholar Test DN of 9-Test Failed.]Dak'ir wracks his brain to try and think of any information he might know about the pacification of Mitoch'ia. However, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of military actions that occur in the Imperium every year, for the Imperiums 10,000 year history, and only a fraction of those ever have Astartes involvement, which are the real ones the Tech Marine would know about. Even knowing the planet's name and that it was once a warzone is not enough for the Salamander to have ever known anything.

Elbow Deep in the dead.

Lyta makes her way down to the Morgue, after stopping and asking an Arbite where it was. The smell of preservatives hits the Acolyte's nose before she even finds the door. Upon opening the door Lyta is greeted by an old man hunched over a body on the mortuary slab. At the sound of the door opening, He looks up from his work. The spectacles he has on are almost comical in size and magnification. His hands remain in the chest cavity of deceased, "Coroner Hibins, what brings you to my sanctum, and better yet, who are you?" When Lyta introduces herself and briefly explains who she is, the old man smiles and pulls his arms out of the corpse, and quickly removes his elbow length gloves. He walks over to a nearby filing cabinet, rifles through it, and hands Lyta a file, while he goes over to a storage drawer, puts on a pair of wrist length gloves, and opens it. He hands a pair to Lyta, and once she has them on, opens it up.

Inside is exactly what Lyta had expected, a yellowed, yet clean skeleton, with no trace of any muscle, sinew, or skin. "John Doe Number 134,538,091, if memory serves," Hibins says, sounding like he were giving a lecture. "Gender identified through standard pelvic bone examination. Ran the standard genetic typing test against the known database and no hits came up. Tells me he was either from off world or he was an under-hiver. I'm betting on the later, given the state of his dentals," he points at a jaw mostly devoid of teeth. "Complete absence any dental work whatsoever, and evidence of impacted molars, all signs of a life in poverty."

He takes a pencil out of his pocket, and starts to point all over the skeleton to what appear to be small incisions. "Heavy evidence the body was left in a location where rats were able to easily get at the body, and the bones are covered by teeth marks from rats eating away the flesh." He puts the pencil back in his pocket. "That unfortunately leaves me with an inability to determine cause of death. Nothing on the bones tell me anything. No sign of a shattered skull, and no fresh bone breaks. There is evidence of long healed fractures on some of the ribs and finger bones, again, evidencing the poor life this soul lived. However he could have died any number of ways, which the bones won't tell us. He could have been suffocated, shot in the gut, throat slit and bled to death, he could have been poisoned, drowned, overdosed on drugs, or even died of natural causes."

Hibins takes his gloves off, "Age was verified via multi sample radio dating, including carbon and a few other isotopes. Based on that multi-sample dating, I got an age on the deceased of 10 years, plus or minus 2. You're free to have that copy of the file and examine the corpse. Not going to get in the way of the Inquisition." He goes and puts on another pair of elbow length gloves as he goes back to work on the body he had been working on.

[Medicine Test DN of 7-Test succeed with one shift on Information.] Lyta spends some time going through the report and comparing notes to the "body" before her. Everything in there about gender and even age seem to check out and the test results and conclusions seem sound. She spends some time going over the body, looking for any marks that might show how John Doe died. The bones are just as Hibins described them, some older fracture heals and a lot of teeth marks from some small animal. However, when looking more closely at the ribs, she notices some marks on the upper left ribs that look to clean. She examines the marks and recognizes them as tool marks left on the bone by some sort of blade. She calls Hibins over, who once again changes gloves, and comes over with a mag-viewer. He focuses in on the marks before giving Lyta a small slap on the back.

"Good work! Are you sure you'd rather not leave the Inquisition to do some coroner work? I don't have an apprentice right now, and would like to retire."After making his quip the coroner looks at the marks again. "Yes, I have seen marks like that before in other murders. The marks are consistent with a bladed weapon being thrust into the chest and nicking the bone. Looks like there was multiple stabs. Given the rough angle and location, I would say that the heart would likely have been punctured. it also appears by looking at the cuts that an incredibly sharp, likely mono-blade was used. This would make linking the weapon to tool marks very difficult as mono blades are sharp and free of most tool marks. But this was certainly a murder."

The Party Prepares to Venture Forth:

Lyta returns to the others just as Shea is leaving, and shares her findings, that the body was of a male, likely a local under-hiver, the murder happened 8-12 years ago, and he was stabbed repeatedly in the heart with a mono knife. It seemed as though the path forward was split. Some wanted to go to the scene of the ritual while others wanted to go and investigate local history. There could be three potential options to investigate history. First would be the Imperial Administratum Headquarters, which would contain all records on imperial affairs. Second could be the Imperial Guard Command. The planet does produce Imperial Guard Regiments, they might have information dating back to that time. Lastly could be the local government offices, similar to the Administratum offices, but dealing with local affairs.

It is not uncommon for conquering regiments to remain on planet and act as a pacification force and to train new regiments. If they maintain records of that conquest and occupation then that should be the information we need, from one source or the other. After spending just a little too long describing her medical findings, Acolyte Hatcher finally found the opportunity to wind down the presentation in progress. She "helpfully" pointed at a pict-capture of the zoomed-in bone scarring.

"... so, his injuries are consistent with cultic practices, but there's enough damage to not make that a certainty. But he was certainly killed with a mono-blade of some variety. By someone familiar with anatomy, or at least the salient portions of that discipline in regards to murder."

As she listened to the deliberations of her associates, she felt torn between the opportunity to assist the xenos at the more immediately concerning site, and her aptitude at wading into the bureaucratic waters that more than half of the team seemed content to.

"I think a stop at the site itself may be wise before we make all these inquiries without additional context to provide. Assuming it exists, of course - but I should think that the picts didn't get everything. It's not likely an active asset, so it may be most helpful in narrowing down our search rather than being its endpoint."

Man's Inhumanity up close

Determining that there was nothing more the be gained by studying picts on a screen, the team decides to visit the scene of the ritual site. The group leaves the main Arbites building, but then immediately run into a bit of a logistical situation. The flyer that dropped them off was gone, and they needed transportation that would fit all of them and an astartes to boot. However, it takes rather little work for the group to requisition a prisoner van from the arbites motor pool. They had been instructed to assist the Inquisitorial acolytes within reason, and giving them an old model prison transport was within reason. Granted most of the cell had to sit in the windowless back, and Dak'ir did bang his head ducking into the back, but fit fine once seated on the plain metal bench running up the side.

From there the trip was long to the old burned out garment factory. The capital of Ata'tah was a sprawling metropolis. Many would classify the world as a "proto-hive" world, given the rather spread out nature of the cities. In proper "Imperial" hives, humanity has found that things are more efficient to get to when they are stacked together and vertical, not spread out and connected by highways. However, some of the greatest cities on Imperial worlds are far from hive cities.

Petticoat Junction was far out from the city center where the Arbites Hall of Justice was. Not only that but the old factory was well off the main highways, in a part of the city that seemed dead, but not devoid of light. Barrel fires and rusted remains of autos littered the streets. Buildings lacked windows, all having been boarded up or bricked over ages ago. They eventually find Petticoat Junction after stumbling upon a patch of road that had been repaired recently. It would seem that the road needed to be updated to accommodate the construction equipment needed by Skytop Inc. They find an empty lot filled with earth movers and stacks of building supplies. Across the street is Petticoat Junction.

True to expectations they find the shell of a building seemingly gutted from the inside. As they approach the building a nervous woman in a hard hat and bright yellow vest approaches. Her jaw drops at the sight of the astartes and the Eldar, before she shakes her head clear. "So, uh, you must be the big wig investigators? I'll take you to the room." The group enters the shell of a building. The walls are a soild brick, so the fire didn't seem to damage their ability to stand. There is no sign of any debris or really any interior, it was either consumed in the fire or torn out.

The construction person leads the group to a square hole in the floor with a new ladder going a story down. "Remains of the old elevator shaft. Ladder will take you down to the room. Just, uh, look for the arbites caution tape. I am not going back down there." The group does as instructed, and they find a small passage at the bottom of the shaft heading in the direction of the center of the building. It appears to be some old cellar and utility tunnels. Sure enough, the group does find an area marked with arbites caution tape and they go inside.

The room looks much the same as the pictures, but might hide something that pictures don't show.

Okay you are now at the ritual site. Anyone can roll an awareness or investigation test, each with a DN of five.

She follows the hints and signs towards any such locus of power that might be hidden within the building's depths. If there is something to discover, her Aeldari senses will surely find it while the pitiful humans still struggle to fasten their shoes. She does give them the honor of a curt "I'll investigate this way. I believe that the signs are strongest from here." before wandering off on her own.

Wrath: 2

Sky steps into the room and takes in the scene. Crime scene photos are one thing, but being there is something else entirely. His skin was crawling, but he ignored it.

He walks the edges of the room, inspecting the walls. Focusing less on the writing on the walls, which really wasn't his department, Sky looks underneath them, at the walls themselves, looking for anything of note - patch jobs, creases, discoloration - anything the investigation might have missed for the writing over top of it.

Awareness (DN5): 6#1d6: 2 1 2 6 5 6
Exactly 5 successes. I'm considering re-rolling failures if I'm on to something with this.

Wrath Points: 2>1

Still somewhat upset at banging his head earlier (the Adeptus Astartes do not get embarrassed), Dak'ir's mood wasn't improved as the Xeno immediately used her powers upon arriving at the ritual chamber. He felt he was never going to get used to working alongside her, but now was not the time to get distracted. While some might focus purely on anything touched by the Warp, in the end these cultists were probably Humans, which meant that any clues to their identity could very well be mundane in nature. It was also clear that those assigned to investigate the ritual chamber did not want to stay in it longer than they had to, so it was reasonable that they would overlook something they'd consider "unimportant".

Searching for mundane clues: 7#1d6 6 3 3 1 1 6 6

Spending 1 wrath to re-roll failures on Awareness test: 4#1d6 6 5 6 2

That's 11 successes in total, , using two 6's and the 5 to meet the DN, and then shifting two 6's to Gain Information while shifting the final 6 to gain a point of Glory, in addition to the Glory from the Wrath die.

After stepping under the tape, Acolyte Hatcher's begins to collate the information found by the others, and considers aberrations and inconsistencies, which is usually exceptionally helpful, except when your Enemy considers aberration its hallmark.

The Eldar Witch begins to reach out into the warp as soon as they get on site, and she is immediately beset with grief and pain so severe she almost doubles over. Even though it had been a few decades, a practical eternity for humans, the soul cares not for such small spans of time, and at least psychically, the remnants of the fire are in the air. Kaenera can feel heat, but not the heat of the fire, no it is the oppressive heat of the machinery and bodies packed on each other, running back and fourth with garments, hunched over sewing machines.

Then she sees the fire in the air, beautiful, like an amber wave. She knows something that the investigators likely didn't, how the fire spread so quickly and took so many lives. The air of the garment factory was thick with the wiry particles of fabric cast off. The fire, caused by an errant Lho discarded into a bucket, lit all of the very air on fire, setting instant fire to all of the other fabric, and the workers.

But there was another presence, dim, but cold, she found it's immaterial presence in the corner of the factory main floor. It was the warp shadow of a Pain Leach. A very minor warp entity, they rarely enter real space. Instead they are drawn to places of great pain and suffering, battlefields, hospitals, the sites of accidents, and feed off the psychic residue as it slowly seeps into the immaterium. This one was likely drawn to the location by the fire so many years ago, but must have stuck around, hoping for more meals. The entity was no threat, there was no rend in the fabric of real space, and the leach would have no power to be brought into this plane, though it likely would not even if beckoned.

Once down at ritual site itself, the Warlock senses not much else. Compared to the suffering above, the death of one, down in the ritual site, was but a small pebble on a beach.

In Real Space, it was the keen senses of Dak'ir that lead to what breakthrough there was to gain. The ritual room was much as the photos showed it to be. Lyta focuses on the ritual site. The stones that made it up were little more than pieces of rockcrete brought down here, and was not an original feature of the room. She manages to find an ochre discoloration that matches dried blood.

Dak'ir initially sits back and watches, but it was Sky's probing of the walls that tipped off the Marine to the only thing the pictures did not reveal. The walls of the room were dark, save the runes carved into the walls, which were lighter. As Shy probes the walls, the time the Marine has spent with the promethium cult pays off. He sees the stone discolor when Sky touches it, and it dawns on him, the walls were darkened due to the fire! The marine takes off his helmet, and working up just a bit of his corrosive spittle, spits at the wall and rubs it with a gauntleted fist. The decades of ash and soot wipe away, showing a color of wall that matches the lighter color of the runic carvings, meaning they were carved after the fire.

The state of the altar and the revelation about the sooty walls leaves the investigators to the conclusion that the ritual site was built sometime after the original fire.

The discovery is short lived but the unmistakable sound of gunfire coming from above them. They peak out of the ritual room and look towards the end of the hallway and the old elevator shaft with the scaffold stairway. A scream is heard this time, followed by more gunshots. With no other way out of the basement that can be seen, the group make their way up the stairwell to the floor above.

They crest the stairwell in time to find a large group of people in black robes execute one of the construction workers. Before the group can react, a shot barely misses Lauren and their attention is drawn to more groups of black clad figures with autoguns. The acolytes quickly take up positions behind a couple piles of rubble.

Okay, time for our first combat. This might go a little slow as we get used to the rules, but I am going to keep track of initiative by listing out all the players and NPCs, and then using strikethrough to mark who has gone and who still has to go. So the first one of you to post goes first. I'll try to do my response post for the next bad guy within 24 hours, might be longer if over a weekend.

Since this is literally my first fight under this system I went with three mobs and one elite. If it ends up overkill, well I'll have them flee or contrive some deus ex machina. But in the meantime, I need one of you to go first. I posted defense of each target below so you at least know what your DN is in combat. that Defense does not include anything for any range modifiers.

Kaenera Uthel | Wrath: 2/2

The sheer trauma and emotion that chokes the air is difficult for the warlock to put aside. Her people feel these matters more strongly than the humans and, indeed, this is a particularly potent site. The pain leech's presence is noted and filed away for later, should it become relevant. As the ambush begins, however, Kaenara wastes no time bringing her considerable psychic prowess to bear. Concentrating on the wraithbone rune as she holds it aloft, she intones a short invocation in her native tongue and finishes with, "Quicken!"

Action: Manifest Psychic Power.

Quicken (DN5): 9#1d6 4 5 2 2 2 6 2 5 3 5 icons on the dot. Kaenera and allies within 5 meters have a free Move action while sustained.

As time warps and bends to the Aeldari's whims, she launches towards the leader with her blade held ready and violence in her heart. She'll not reach him just yet, not even with preternatural speed, but taking cover amidst the rubble is no challenge at all.

Move: Standard Move and then Run to cover 16 meters and hunker down behind some rubble for +1 defense.

As the Eldar draws upon the warp and moves forward and supernatural speed, the Leader of this group of plainly dressed cultists points his auto-pistol at the approaching Xenos. "Not only is it bad enough that these Imperials have taken our world, they bring outsiders more foul than themselves here to pollute it, kill them all!

The cultist leader lets out with shots from his auto pistol, and the pistol and knife weilding cultists around him do the same, raining down lead on the Eldar. However, thanks to the eldritch power of her Rune armor, and her eldar reflexes, the primitive weapons don't touch the Xenos.

FOr these first few attacks I'm going to use orokos and write out everything, so that way we are all on the same page since this is the first time. Want to be checking each other's work so to speak.

Okay, the cultist shot, and used his ability, "kill them all" to spend a ruin to give nearby cultists attacks. I do not interpret that ability as them using their turn.

The leader has Ballistics of 6 and agility of 3, for a dice pool of 9.

to hit Eldar: 9#1d6 4 5 5 4 3 3 6 5 5

So that is 8 icons Kaenera's sheet says she has defense of 3, plus cover is 4, so he has enough to hit her, plus shift his exalted icon to damage.

cult leader damage: 2d6+7 13

That's not fully accurate on damage. He gets one ED from the shifted exalted Icon, and one normally, so that is 7+1 for the one icon, for 8 damage. Kaenera has resilience of 9, so nothing gets through.

Next up is the mob. Now they have Ballistic of 3 and agility of 2, for a Ballistic roll of 5. However, as they are a mob, they can add bonus die to their roll equal to the number of attackers, up to a max of half the mob and campaign tier levels, which is six in both cases. So they are rolling 11 dice on their auto-pistols.

to hit Eldar: 11#1d6 4 2 6 2 5 5 3 1 3 1 6

That is Seven icons, two of them exalted. They need one of those exalted to hit, but will shift the other into an ED, giving them 7+2ED damage.

autopistol damage: 2#1d6 5 2

Just like the cult leader, that is only 8 damage, not enough to get through Kaenera's 9 resilience.

Gregori takes some shots at the cultists as he makes his way closer to the targets. His las bolts mostly impact the already blackened walls, leaving little evidence of their passing. However one clips a cultist in the throat, cauterizing the wound immediately, but also bisecting his jugular vein, causing the cultist to immediately feint, and quickly expire, from lack of blood getting to his brain.

A group of the autogun toting cultists see Dak'ir as a threat, and all 12 open up on him. However the autogun rounds can do nothing against the brutal bulwark of Ceremite armor, and they all ricochet away or mushroom against the plate.

Now they have Ballistic of 5 and agility of 2, for a Ballistic roll of 7. However, as they are a mob, they can add bonus die to their roll equal to the number of attackers, up to a max of half the mob and campaign tier levels, which is six in both cases. So they are rolling 13 dice on their autoguns

to hit marine: 13#1d6 6 4 2 3 6 1 3 2 2 2 6...

So that is Seven icons with three exalted icons, enough to hit Dak'ir's 4 defense with cover. However, it is also a six on the wrath die, which means a critical is suffered by Dak'ir, if they were not troop level opponents. Since they are I only get back ruin.

Moving up into cover.

That's a whopping 12 successes. For each shift of 2 successes I can hit another target in the mob, so I'll roll all of it over to do that (12-4 leaves 8 extra, or 4 extra targets hit, for a total of 5), and the damage applies to all of them.
Damage 2#1d6: 2 # 6 5

Sky charges out from cover near the elevator shaft and lets rounds fly from his hand cannon. Initially it is difficult as the cultists are bunched enough together that it is hard to see where one ends and the other begins, but then when firing with a hand cannon, over penetration is guaranteed. Sky empties the entire magazine of the pistol into the cultists, and five of them fall over dead.

The leader of the cult sees this, and yells at the remaining cultists, "Get in there and shoot and stab these off-worlders before they chew you up!" The Cultists seem to listen, and run in the general direction of the heroes. They take a page out of Sky's book and fire their pistols as they do so back at the under-hiver. The rounds find gaps between the construction material, then again, at this range and that volume of fire, A hit was guaranteed; Sky just didn't know it would hurt so damned bad.

Okay, so the melee mob is going to take a move action and move six meters, and then use a run action to move another 6 meters. They are then doing a multi-action to shoot their pistols at Sky. a Multi attack incurs a +2DN penalty for each additional action. Since the shooting is just one, it is DN of +2. The DN to hit Sky is 6; 3 base defense, 1 for cover, and 2 for multi-action. As a mob they can add additional dice to the attack roll equal to half the size of the mob, here it is 3, plus one for being in (danger) close range, for a +4. As was established they have BS of 3 and agility of 2, so their dicepool is 9.

to hit sky: 9#1d6 4 6 1 3 2 5 4 6 2

So they get seven Icons with 2 exalted, but one has to be used, to hit, so they shift one of the Exalted to an ED, meaning they do 7+2ED to Sky.

autopistol damage: 2d6 10.

The mob does 9 damage against sky. According to her Character sheet, Sky has Resilience of 4 so Sky takes five wounds, unless she tries to soak.

Clanpot, if you choose to soak feel free to post that here before or after the next player posts their action. If this were at the table that'd be done immediately. I am not going to assume players will soak each attack, I will leave that decision, and the rolling to the player.

Ignoring the pinging of the bullets bouncing off his power armor, Dak'ir strides towards the approaching cultists, hand flamer at the ready. "In the name of the Emperor and Primarch Vulkan, impurities such as yourselves shall be removed through fire, so that the Imperium can be reforged stronger than ever." Hopefully this old factory wouldn't mind adding a few more people burning to death to its history.

___________
Moving 7 meters towards the melee mob, which puts them in range of my hand flamer, which ignores their +1 defense from cover. Checked with Werix, and they said the cultists are close enough together that a Blast 1 attack will hit two of them.
Hand Flamer vs Melee Mob (DN 3): 7#1d6 1 3 2 4 5 2 2

Right, that's a horrible roll, so I'll spend my last Wrath point to re-roll the 5 failures.

Vulkan is ashamed (re-roll): 5#1d6 1 6 5 4 6
MUCH better. Unfortunately, I forgot that if the Wrath die rolls a 1, it can't be re-rolled, but it didn't matter because it still came up 1. That's still 4 icons and 2 exalted icon, so I'll shift one exalted icon to add +1 ED, and get another +1 ED from my Angel of Death ability since I hit a mob. The second exalted icon I'll shift to give us another point of Glory. Still get a complication from that Wrath die, sadly.

Hand Flamer damage (7+3 ED): 3#1d6 2 2 3
Orokos hates me. That's 7 damage to both of the melee cultists I targeted, and thanks to my hand flamer's Spread trait, any excess damage goes to another member of the mob. And everyone hit by the attack, regardless if the damage got through their resilience, gets set on fire thanks to the Blaze trait, so they take D3 Mortal Wounds at the start of their turn. So I killed at least two of the melee cultists, and possibly more depending on what their resilience is, plus whoever burns to death at the start of their next turn.

Also, since I called upon Vulkan as I horribly burned these heretics to death, I gain a point of Wrath for accomplishing my Objective.
