OK, Death Thread, educate me on the topic of squatting armies:

One of the reasons CB has given for pulling production of various minis is to "reduce SKUs." I can understand producing smaller numbers of minis that don't sell well/move quickly/whatever, but I guess I just don't "get" reducing SKUs - surely in any even arguably semi-modern business this sort of thing is tracked electronically, yes? So what's really going on here? Is it an issue of physical storage space for molds? For master sculpts used to make those molds? Also, why in an arguably semi-modern setting where on-line ordering is a thing, how is produce-on-demand not the preferred option for this sort of low-production-count sales? I get that POD is less efficient, but if these kinds of orders are low-volume anyway, how much of your total production time are they taking? What is the real benefit that CB is hoping to obtain by this?

panascope
Mar 26, 2005

Molds are expensive to store and fragile too, it takes time off of production to swap them out, and if you run up on the expected lifespan of the tool it can make more sense to sundown the product than retool and keep it around (hi Forgeworld).

What's going on with Privateer Press other than that abysmal video? Is WMH dead again or something?

And Malifaux, I haven't played in ages but that was my favorite minis game by far (despite the godawful wannabe Tim Burton minis that were often scaled completely wrong...)

Warmahordes communities seem to have died off left and right in the past few years. I think the main reason is that PP had an unpopular new edition release at roughly the same time GW "became good" and released a popular new edition of 40K. Their minis are also kind of lackluster compared to the competition while not really being any cheaper. They seem to be switching away from that mushy soft plastic but it still makes up a big part of their range, including all of the starter boxes. Finally they killed their community organizer program so now there's no PP sanctioned motivation/guidance to become your area's Warmahordes booster.

My town used to have a very strong Warmahordes presence but now the only wargames with any sort of community are X-Wing and, like, uh, Pathfinder...

I used to get a decent amount of Malifaux in, but the other players were mostly college students who have graduated and left :sigh:

Grymkin seem to have been pretty popular, but they're a limited faction so they've probably got 90% of the units they ever will.

They can't radically change their rules because GW players have likely played their rule sets their whole lives. They're good at WH rules and know them by heart. They can only do incremental changes. They tried with AoS and lord knows what a shitshow that was for a long time.

I hear Mk3 is actually kinda decent now, but the following destroyed goodwill with the player, effectively destroyed their community building, and caused many players to leave.

1. Mk3 release was about as good as Age of Sigmar release, and that's saying something.
2. They got rid of their official forums.
3. They got rid of their press gangers / local community builders.
4. They got rid of their magazine.
5. Their model line just isn't competitive anymore. The models aren't the same quality as what other game lines offer, while being every bit as expensive. I'm not going to say they're ugly, but they rarely turn heads.
6. Other game companies have really stepped up. PP was the only miniatures games with good rules and competitive play for a long long time, that isn't remotely true anymore.

Which kinds of molds? Because CB doesn't do stuff in plastic. They're spin-casting metal minis from rubber molds, old-school. There's a place that does that for historical minis near here and they have literally thousands of different molds for minis in several scales crossing multiple historical eras. Why isn't SKU reduction a thing for them?

Now if you're talking plastic-injection molds, I totally get it. Those things are ridiculously expensive, so you want to be sure of your return on investment, avoid unnecessary wear and tear, etc. But that's not what CB does.

I’m talking about plastic yeah, I don’t know nothin about CB.
As far as SKU reduction, they might just prefer to do fewer models that sell more than having thousands of molds lying around waiting for a once a year order. Even if they’re just lovely rubber molds you still gotta store and track them, and changing molds is still time when you’re not making money.

What was the justification for these? Because these are literally all things GW did that turned people against them back in the day so Id have thought having an actual living example of what not to do would be something people would take on board (yeag Gdubs didnt get rid of their magazine but they did turn it into such a thinly disguised sales catalogue nobody was interested anymore).

So the big thing is that way back, lots of people were mad about 2nd edition coming out. That's fine, edition changes should always be scrutinized. Personally I was of the opinion that they should've released free PNP cards/etc. for people like many companies do, since people will end up buying the official stuff anyway. FFG decided to use a fluid points system with the game so they can patch in points rebalances whenever they want if ships prove to be too expensive or cheap. This was announced back in March or so, and people were expecting them to release a beta at GenCon during the north american championships to, I don't know, get some testing and feedback. They didn't. Instead, they waited to release it as a horribly buggy mess the weekend of release where you got funny screenshots like this:

and

and most importantly:

And loads of stuff that have mostly been fixed in the 3 weeks since the app's release but there are still broken portions. Now, remember when this was supposed to be a forward-looking app that can patch imbalanced points (hence why there are no more points totals on cards)? Well they didn't do any playtesting with the points. IIRC, they declared it openly, which has led to many tournament organizers doing "2.0" format (akin to MTG's standard with just the newest releases) vs. their "extended" format (MTG legacy). This is a bit of a catch-22 problem as you can imagine since they'd need to get tournament data to even realize which ships should have points adjustments. But hey, ask people to purchase their new conversion kits and later reveal that woops nothing was actually balanced for it, hope you enjoy playing with your basic wave 1 2013-era lists for a few months. Currently there have been a couple high-profile tournaments going gently caress it and doing extended anyway.

Oh, the best part? The first big official non-invitational tournament is at Pax Unplugged which is a month away and they still haven't picked a format for it yet. :smoobles:

Reasons were all legitimate imo. Press ganger thing in response to magic judge lawsuit. Official forums regulars were ultra toxic and filled with nothing other than complaints. Magazines dont sell well in a digital age and you need to be as popular as GW to sell them even at a small loss. Even though the reasons were legitimate, it still cost them a lot. The online community for WMH is pretty loving bad right now. While GW reddits are super active, the WMH reddit is dead, and the only place with meaningful activity is on Facebook groups. I have no idea why their models and sculpts don't get updated though.

Mantic actually has been pretty decent about fulfilling Kickstarter orders. They're not perfect and apparently some are handled better than others, but they're very good at communicating when there's an issue and very rarely is this issue internal. Getting product manufactured in China is a total shitshow, but the fact is that Mantic will always deliver, eventually. Vanguard is supposed to deliver early in fact.

The real issue is that their CEO has a hard-on for a single faction and they get way better treatment as a result.
