The Match has begun! Please see links to the teams below. Goon Japan Goon Russia The populist wave that has swept across the world has reached Japan. With a jittery economy and scandals in the previous government on the minds of the public the government that emerges following a set of of snap elections is more nationalist and populist than ever. The new prime minister has set his eyes on the long-disputed Kuril Islands, repeatedly claiming them for Tokyo in numerous speeches. The JGSDF has traditionally been concentrated in Hokkaido already, but airborne and amphibious units have moved there, obstensibly for exercises. The Russians, familiar with that excuse to concentrate forces, have become more suspicious than ever. Not helping the situation is raucous demonstrators on both sides sailing towards either the Kuriles or Hokkaido in small boats. Several have been killed and dozens more detained. The Russians have been slipping troops in, but an improvised convoy has been readied at Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to carry much heavier forces to Kunashir and Iturup. Should it reach the islands safely, the Japanese goal of taking them without excessive causalties will be impossible. On the other hand, if it's sunk, the Kuriles are Japan's for the taking. The stakes are thus extremely high. Due to the (previously) anti-invasion nature of the JSDF and the traditional Soviet/Russian defensive doctrine at sea, both sides have an impressive array of sea denial weapons. The question is which shall prove superior. What is Command : Modern Air Naval Operations (CMANO) ? Published by WarfareSims, it models modern air and naval combat unlike anything else on the market. It simulates radar, flight mechanics, weapons performance, thermal ocean layering, and drat near anything that could impact combat operations. It's kind of groggy but also pretty drat approachable. We've got everything from 1946 Wildcats to hypothetical Chinese stealth fighters. Want boats? We got it. Want submarines? gently caress yah. Want an obscure Chilean helicopter from 1964? It's probably there. What is Kuril Clash? Kuril Clash is a Goon Vs. Goon Screen Shot Lets Play. The Russians are tasked with escorting the convoy to the north coast of Iturup island. The Japanese are tasked with sinking the convoy. The Japanese have superior aircraft but inferior submarines. The Russians have plentiful (but older) aircraft but more importantly satellites and submarines. How do we play? Call out your side in this thread and retreat to one of the two planning threads. Once in your respective thread you will see an Order of Battle. There will be overall theater commanders, sub commanders, boat commanders, and of course wing commanders. Due to the nature of air combat we will not be controlling individual fighters or strike aircraft. But you may still claim a seat in these aircraft, but be aware that the control will go to the Wing Commander. Specialty aircraft such as AEW and ASW will be handled differently and may be sent on missions or assigned to a patrol. Overall theater commander may give instructions such as "Patrol the area west of Iturup" but may not say "Bound your patrol to 50 nm, start at 4806 / 15204." I will run the game in 30 minute bursts and record activity in that time. At the end of each burst you may adjust unit orders or we'll continue with the previous orders. This will be strictly screenshot as I don't have the ability to take video of each side. I can do one, or the other, but not both. How do I give orders? You may set a patrol area, define the patrol type (Anti submarine Warfare, Anti-Air Patrol, Anti Surface Warfare), and how to time the launches. You may set a strike mission. You may direct a sub to travel a direction, at a certain speed, at a certain depth. Feel free to ask the thread. I'm more than happy to help if you know the kind of thing you want to do, but not the jargon. You may leave many variables to the AI, or, if you feel clever, set speeds and depths manually. What is an AESA/ASW/FAFINPICKLE? Half the fun of this is learning about weapons systems, capabilities, and how incredibly deadly technology is today. Most of the weapons systems we're using are one-shot-one kill. Determining how to survive is the trick. Just Post Please sign up below with your side and preferred command. The theater commander should be knowledgable about CMANO, but hey, I'll totally work with an eager newbie. After that head to your specific thread and check out your order of battle. Alright then, I'll throw my hat into the ring for Russia. I'll have to look at the OOB to figure out what I want to command, I assume that's the idea?

Posting for the peanut gallery. I'm actually reading a book right now that's topical to this thread: Joachim Glaubitz, Between Tokyo and Moscow: The History of an Uneasy Relationship, 1972 to 1990s As it turns out, Russia's seizure of the Kurils has colored their relationship with Japan ever since WW2, and it's never really been resolved nor eased. Hell, they've never even actually signed a post-war peace treaty in all this time. gradenko_2000 fucked around with this message at 03:55 on Oct 15, 2018 |

Japan didn't expect to be ceding Kunashir and the little ones around it because it didn't consider them part of the Kuril Islands.

I would like to note for the record that populism is good and is a word for when the rich and powerful see politics they don't like. Hence calling both Trump and Sanders "populist" when they are both very different sorts of political leaders. One being an awful shithead and the other trying to help the poor and suffering by challenging the sole legitimacy of private power. That being said, call me for Japan.

I'll run 5 minutes for both sides and give everyone a good picture of what's around. Then we'll get into orders. At that point I'll close this thread to combatants. Ooookay! Here. We. Go. What are the ground-based SSM/SAM defenses for both sides? I'm seeing a lot of icons in the Kuriles for Russia but I don't know if those are missiles, radars, or both (because you just know one or both will try to carry out various crazed schemes against enemy shore facilities).
|
# ? Oct 18, 2018 01:51 |
The Russians have a collection of old SS-2-N Styx missiles for use as shore to ship missiles. These were most famously used during the Battle of Latakia. For ground defense the Russians have SA-15E Gauntlets and SA-20B's. The SA-20B's "only" have a range of 80nm, which isn't terribly far in this theater. The Russians have access to some Big Bird radars as well. The Japanese have a Patriot battery at Chitose. The range is shorter than the SA-20B's but the chance of interception is much higher. They also have SAM-4 Chu-SAM systems with a 30nm range. Both of these systems are quite capable. The Japanese also have 4 J/FPS-4 radars that are great at detecting things in the air and not on the sea.

Everyone's fairly well shielded against air attack, in other words. I was going to say that while air- or sea-launched cruise missiles against airbases and their air defenses are probably going to feature, the SS-N-2s won't see any use unless something's gone hilariously wrong, since the Japanese ships are unlikely to get in that close (and if they reveal their positions they're going to get Onix'd instantly, so they're probably going to play it carefully)... ...and then I read the Japanese side's plan to shell one of the Russian airbases.
|
# ? Oct 18, 2018 02:42 |
I'm quite excited to see a proper naval shelling. The scenario has static weather but I'm thinking of varying it every other hour. It'll be 1/3 chance better, 1/3 chance same, 1/3 chance worse. Depending how it all shakes out we may expand a few other options.

Varied weather does sound good. This is the northern Pacific, after all. Right on the heels of the Japanese proposing to go Full Jutland with their little fleet, the Russians promptly up the craziness with their own guns. (Though they should be using their otherwise-useless Su-33s for this--the MiGs at least carry very useful Krypton missiles...)

After all those combat mission games, we really should have expected such early aggression. It almost feels like you need to have pre-game recon system, because goons are never willing to spend the first few turns scouting instead of charging in.
